Should Sony Worry About Titanfall?

Momentum can change just that fast in this industry.

Most will agree that Sony's PlayStation 4 has all the momentum thus far. Chances are, it's well ahead of the Xbox One in terms of worldwide sales (last count was 5.3 million for the PS4, by the way).

However, as we all know, powerful new exclusive software can really give hardware a huge boost. Even the legendary PS2 got a lot of help from the likes of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec the summer after it launched, and let's not forget that the first full year of that system's reign (2001) was one of the best software years in the history of gaming. A title like Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall could prompt a momentum shift if it's stellar.

Thing is, it's undeniably the hottest game on the Internet right now. Leaps and bounds ahead of inFamous: Second Son, for example, which is a PlayStation 4 exclusive also scheduled to launch next month. Sony should take note: Despite all the momentum the PS4 has accumulated up to this point, the most talked-about game by a long shot is only playable on the Xbox platform. Yes, it's also available on PC but in the console world, that doesn't mean as much.

Factor in the recent price cut for the Xbox One, and we're seeing a great opportunity for Microsoft to earn back some market share. The question is: Do you think it will happen?

It's gonna depend on scores. If the game doesn't do enough things new then it will be hurt be "enough COD already" syndrome. Plus the fact that it's multiplayer only means that if there are enough opening day glitches it will get hammered across the net and no amount of fixes and patches over the ensuing weeks will erase that first impression.

I think it probably doesn't bode well that all of MS's hopes are pinned on this single bought exclusive.

I see most people that own an Xbox buying this game. But I don't see a huge amount of people buying an Xbox because of this game. Sure it will help sales but it isn't an exclusive. I know I'm going to pick it up for PC once the price drops.

I dunno man. Titanfall is the biggest reason I'm debating buying an XBone. I know a lot of friends who are contemplating the same thing. We're PlayStation guys, but Titanfall looks so very good....

Not saying it will make the XBone overtake the PS4 in sales, but don't discount the amount of hype this game is generating. I'm not even a multiplayer FPS fan and I'm weighing the $500 investment.

If your not an FPS fan this game shouldn't make you drop $500 bucks. I've seen the beta, it's nothing new or different. It looks great but it's a typical online fps. You shoot, you die, you run, you hide, you wall run, you shoot, get in a mech, you die and do it over again.

Aging hipster its not worth 500 dollars not even close. Its a decent shooter but honestly I didn't really like it. It has some cool ideas but it is insanely casual for my liking. I think it will do well because of this but honestly it feels like Call of Duty only with some elements of unreal tournament thrown in there, like double jump and wall running.

By the way, I'm not saying it's going to fail or be a terrible game. I'm just saying in general shooter fans will get something familiar and those looking to get into shooters will get something they can experience in any other fps.

I think this game may be just like COD not only in many gameplay elements, but also in being "scoreproof". Even if the game gets low scores, which I doubt, it will sell massively because that's what Xbox owners and MS are clinging to right now.

I don't think Sony should worry because, as some have already stated, it is not an Xbone exclusive; it will sell a lot more on the 360 and PC because there are millions more who already own these two platforms. It will sell in most Xbones, but I doubt the number of people that will spend +500$ just to get it at launch will be noticeable.

Besides, it wouldn't surprise me if EA announces the sequel one or two years after this one is released, which will most likely land on the PS4 as well.

Let's be honest though, the demographic that this game is targeting are the kind of people who couldn't care less about a review score.

This game will sell millions no doubt.

Should Sony be worried about it? Heck no.

Considering Titanfall 2 will be on PS4, and it will probably be out either next year or the year after.

Sony should worry. Titanfall is pulling down incredible praise from every corner of the internet, media and consumers alike, but Sony may not be impacted quite so heavily because it is also going to be available on the PC and 360. That's the real factor that could hamstring a potential explosion in the number of XBO units that are sold.

The thing that boggles my mind is that with Titanfall, MS has a new-styled multiplayer FPS that adheres strongly to the CoD formula. Respawn, by all accounts, have crafted a phenomenal experience in making it familiar, yet different and the world has responded. Why can't Sony do that? They've experimented with MP-only games before. MAG was an FPS capable of handling 256 players at the same time, but from what I gather, what ultimately held it back was its mechanics, which just weren't up to snuff. Why didn't they get Guerrilla assisting on it, considering that's their FPS studio, and combine their expertise in that field with Zipper's experience in tactical battles?
Why did they focus so heavily on experimental gameplay with Starhawk when Warhawk already offered a very strong basis for iteration?
They were high concept ideas; while Titanfall is an iterative one. That's a lesson that Sony would do well to learn, methinks.

You hit a lot of great points.

I think the biggest issue will be how different is the 360 to XBO version. I really think most people are just gonna play it on their 360. Especially because most of their friends are gonna be on there playing it already.

Mayhaps you hate it, LV, but it's what most everyone else does want. The CoD formula is still solid as hell, but it needs that extra wow factor for people to be excited, and that's what Titanfall offers.

The audience has spoken, and the masses do not want SOCOM tactics, and cross-play is just a little bonus that almost no-one does anyway.

I think PS fans sometimes forget it's not about what they think is good or what they think should sell. It's pretty much unanimous around all sites that it's a damn good game. I don't care about it one bit because I don't play online, but I realize I'm in the minority.

Most people are still on the hype train. Even after the beta people aren't as excited about the gameplay as they are the idea behind the gameplay. I've seen the beta, and I have friends who were in the beta. My impression is it being onlinemp makes the mech more of any standard vehicle like a tank in BF4. I think they were intended to be like kills streaks in CoD. Otherwise the gameplay is CoD with a tiny hint of Crysis. If you want CoD with vehicles this is it. If you want something new or innovative well look elsewhere because it's a typical online shooter.

At the very most, Microsoft has possibly a 2 year window of opportunity to turn Titanfall into it's money maker.

I don't see any other exclusive titles (TF isn't exclusive) being a big enough pull to bring people to the Xbox.

Once Titanfall 2 hits the PS4, that's it for them. The opportunity is over.

I think Titanfall being a multiplayer game will be the boost the Xbox1 needs and it will launch the system back in to the competition AND I would say back in the lead in the US and UK.

Should Sony worry. YES. They do not have ANYTHING out or coming out soon that will excite people. Second Son looks great, but its a single player game and unlike Titanfall will not have a replay value once a gamer plays it after a few times through.

Do I want this to happen? No. Should Sony start looking at some kicka@@ mulitplayer game to be competitive in that part of the market? Yes. Is it important to do so? I think so.

I do not and will not play this game, Titanfall, but those who love the genre will and then some. And the DLC for it will keep the excitement going for a while. Unless there are some real major issues with this game, it will be a major success.

Sony needs to keep moving forward with games. I am sure they will in time.

Keep playing!

I think you are GREATLY overestimating the effect Titanfall will have. Especially when it is on 360 and PC.

MS has Halo (which they will continue to re-release to sell more), Gears (which is 3 years away), Quantam Break (not much excitement or info around this will enjoy Alan Wake style sales), Project Spark (similar success to LBP I think), Sunset Overdrive (meh).

Their biggest sellers will be Halo.

Sony had a tremendous advantage last year in positive PR after Microsoft's numerous missteps and an edge like that doesn't just evaporate overnight. Titanfall might sell some Xbones but a lot of people have already dropped money on the PS4 and how many of them are going to make another large purchase so soon after that for one game? Respawn seems to have a winner on it's hands but it'll primarily attract those that are on the fence.

I own an xbox one and played the beta last week and the game really is a fresh take on multiplayer. Will it hinder sales because its only multiplayer? I don't think it will. Its an invigorating new IP that has people talking about it everywhere in gaming and tech sites. Sony needs to worry because they just dont have something that's getting people riled up right now. I personally can't wait to get infamous next month but I am also ready for some multiplayer sessions with titanfall.

Also Microsoft knows this will be a system seller and pushing the game in free with a purchase of an xbox one will push quite a bit of people on the fence to just get one. P.S. I just love games and that's why I own both systems and titanfall really is fun.

I think the thing that kills some of the momentum with this game being a major system seller is the fact that it's on pc and 360 as well. This fact can't be ignored. You have gamers that aren't ready to take that next gen step and with this game being available on 360 that kills off some sales. There's over 80 million 360 units out there.

The pc crowd can't be ignored either. The system requirements aren't super high end if i recall correctly, so those who are serious about fps games on their pc should be ok.

What sony should worry about/ focus on is getting more quality exclusives out the door. And don't ignore multiplayer. Not every game needs it But its important to appeal to those gamers who crave it because it keeps them coming back

People saying how unique and new it is kinda makes me shake my head.

Its you, aiming a gun at other players and shooting them until they are dead. Sometimes you get into a mech, which is a larger version of yourself which you then use to aim and shoot other players. The morons who are hyped for this will get it but it won't be a major system seller. Sony's got around a 2.5 million lead on MS and this won't be the Lightning MS needs.

I have been playing the beta on the PC and I will say it again its not that great. It honestly feels like CoD with wall running and mechs in place of kill streaks.

Its a nice disguise but one that ultimately feels too familiar to me. I like shooters that require twitch but also calm aiming, not ones that picking the fastest RoF gun is the best option. Counter Strike Global Offensive is the best shooter I have played in a while because of its balanced gameplay. You have to be twitchy but calm with your guns bursting.

When I play Titanfall it feels like the same crap as CoD even on the PC, where you just need to get them in the middle of your screen and ADS hold trigger and aim assist does the rest.

I don't think sony should be worried. Its not going to sell too many consoles as most people who wanted this game already have an Xbone, couple that with the fact its on the 360 and the PC and you have a lot of ways to get this game without dropping 500 bucks. And by no means is it going to be a different experience on the Xbone other than graphics which the PC will beat anyway.

TLDR, no sony shouldn't be worried :)

All I know is I'm sick of hearing about Titanfall... With the ridiculous amount of coverage and hype this game is getting you would think it's the second coming of Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider or GTA III, people talk about it like it's some huge revolution in gaming which is funny considering it's another shooter. It might be adding some new wrinkles to the shooter genre but it's still a shooter and I don't get the hype.

It's definitely gonna be big -- but it's still just a single game (and a game you can find on both PC AND 360!) I'm reminded of Mario 64 --that was, and still is, one of the greatest games ever made, and there was nothing like it at the time, and you couldn't find it anywhere else. No question that game helped Nintendo sell a lot of N64s, but in the long run, the system was just not competitive with what the PlayStation offered.

And even then Sonic Adventure was a dud. It looked amazing but the gameplay was meh.

The truth is that MS is advertising Titanfall more than any other product is being advertised right now. I can't have my tv on for more than 5 minutes without seeing a Titanfall commercial. Plus it's the only game that's been hyped for the xone so it's the only xone game anyone is talking about.

All Sony needs to take from this is that Second son should have a lot more advertising. Sony seemed to pick up the advertising for the ps3/ps4 over the last few years, but they still don't advertise for their exclusive games.

I know a lot of people who don't even know what Infamous is, let alone that their is new one that is being released exclusively on ps4.

What do you watch? I haven't seen any commercials for it yet. But I mostly DVR everything I plan on watching and fast forward through the commercials.

I haven't seen any either but I don't watch any young adult programming so I can't say much from my anecdotes.

It is all over the place, and not just on TV. It's plastered all over gaming sites and facebook.

I don't do FB and I will agree it's all over gaming sites. IGN spams articles on the game 24/7.

Titanfall is definitely getting the crap hyped out of it! So much advertising everywhere... Even here! For the past week, when I load up PSX website, that stupid oversized banner add mucks up the main page! And this is a Playstation-centric website!
Happy that when I goto the articles it's "The Lego Movie" screaming at me!

And as far as TF being a system seller... I don't see it affecting sales in any major fashion. It's not exclusive! When people see it's also available on the 360, I think they'll opt for saving money and get it on the console they already have!

CAN'T WAIT FOR SECOND SON!

The only place I've see Titanfall advertised was right here on our own PSXE site.
And that was only once(so far).

I usually skip through the commercials as well, but sometimes while doing so I catch a half second of titanfall. Seen it on fox, cbs, spike, tbs, and usa.

They should have just called it cod bots.

"Yes, it's also available on PC but in the console world, that doesn't mean as much."

PC's not the only other option. There is also the 360.

What are the chances that current 360 owners will rather shell out 60 USD for the game rather than for the entire 500 USD bundle?

I must admit that I still find it staggering that people/press can call a single game a system seller. How can one game be good enough to sell an entire system costing around £400?

Consoles though are for more than one game and with the vast majority of games being released being multi platform it would make sense to get the console which plays the vast majority of games the best.

We don't however live in a logical world.....

So should sony be worried.....not really. Cutting the price won't shift any more consoles than they currently do because they are supply constrained whilst msft are demand constrained. One game isn't going to shift the balance of power, it may bump up the xbox numbers but thats just reducing the numbers of consoles on shelves......will the retailers who have had tonnes of these on the shelves uphold for weeks/months place orders of the same size again....I don't think so.

FF7 moved Playstations. As did FFX. You're right though, not many games are. It's extremely rare. I bet Halo moved Xboxes as well.

I don't see this as a system seller.

If you own a 360 and haven't upgraded to a XB1 yet, why would you shell out $500 just to play a slightly upgraded version of the same game you could have bought for your 360?

Also, this game WILL play the best on PC, there is no doubt about that. IF I ever purchase this, it will be on PC.

micro&soft is pumping out thousands if not millions of dollar hyping this game to hell, that is ALL this game has going for it. I tried it on PC, found the game SEVERLY lacking, unless you're a mindless zombie that doesn't mind running shooting and dying over and over and over again this will probably pass fairly quickly, what multi-player only game has ever really been "successful"?

IMO, Sony shouldn't worry too much. Besides, as others have pointed out, this isn't XBone exclusive, and most people aren't going to bother dropping $500 in addition to the price of the game to pick it up, they will just go w/ the 360 or PC version.

Remember, micro&soft has been caught paying for reviews before, I doubt they will stop their old ways...

There are a lot of people out there that buy a system based off of one game let's not forget. But since this is only a multiplayer game this will be interesting to see how this will fair against infamous. Because we all know multiplayer only games have never been one for the records as far as a breakout success. Not that I can remember anyway. But with infamous we all know this is single player only & has always been. But with Xbox 1 will that help there sales greatly I don't think it will, and that price drop won't be happening in the states anyway. And last but not least this isn't a race it's a marathon my how people tend to forget that lol.

I played the open beta on the PC and while it's an interesting game, I don't think it brings a whole lot of new game mechanics (I found Tribes: Ascend with more vertical movement) to the FPS table other than the titans themselves (which is, although only slightly different, than tank vs. tank battle in BF4, but with more dodge possibilities instead of using anti-weapon techs).

As Sony, I wouldn't spend too much time on it unless MS drops the Titanfall bundle to $399 (I just saw some price drops with coupon codes to $475 for the bundle with game). The console version is also not full 1080, so people with capable gaming rigs should be able to run it at 1920x1080 on their PCs, and wouldn't bother to buy an XB1 to play Titanfall (I would be one of those people waiting for a price drop on the PC version before I buy).

Sony should continue to focus on their own 1st party games (1886: The Order) to ensure gamers who are on the fence to purchase a PS4 over the XB1.

I also thought I remember reading a Sony exec's comments about Titanfall not being a MS exclusive for very long, but I could be wrong about that.

Played the beta and it will get good score from some places and some average from others i m sure .

Good/great for casuals player ( ai enemies are there so noobs have something they can kill ) , average/good for the rest ( 6 enemies controlled by real player is just too low ).

It s a game that will make people glad they have a ONE but it won t be much of a sysstem seller .

I own all the new console systems and played the beta version of Titanfall, I had a ball playing the game, and even though it did have simularities with other FPS's it was still a great game with little flaws if any. I don't think it will drive Xbox1 sales, but I don't see anything new and exciting coming from sony's side really driving sales either. If sony was smart they would have had the newest Resistance game on PS3 also.
