PS4: Would You Recommend Purchasing Now, Or Waiting?

Let's say someone came up to you in a store, and asked you about the PlayStation 4.

"Do I buy now or do I wait?" he or she asks. What would be your response? For the sake of this hypothetical situation, let's just assume that the individual in question knows very little about video games.

I'd actually have some difficulty answering this question. Actually, I'd probably have to fire back a few questions of my own. For instance, some people are willing to consider the purchase of a new game console as an investment for the future. They don't mind that the library is still small and they'll have to wait for the heavy hitting software. They get excited about waiting and in fact, they like the idea of checking out all the new stuff on the horizon. Not everyone is a big fan of this approach, though. If they step up and spend $500 or so (you need at least a game or two, right?), they want to be satisfied now.

Of course, then you've got the problem of the definition of "satisfied." Some people are perfectly satisfied with only one or two great games, simply because they don't have the time to play more. Others want a good dozen titles ready and rarin' to go. Another argument involves price and patience; if you're willing to wait a while, you will inevitably grab the product at a lower price. You can also play the "one game you're waiting for" card; i.e., if there's one particular title they want more than any other, just advise them to wait for it.

How would you answer the question?

honestly, I'd say just wait. Then again, by the end of 2014, there will be a considerable amount of great games, so why not now? It's not like the console will receive a price cut anytime soon.

Still, I would just wait and enjoy the PS3 generation for a bit longer. Personally I got the PS4 asap, but that's because I don't feel the need for instant gratification. I know that eventually I'm going to get my DriveClub, Gran Turismo, FFXV, MGSV, Watchdogs, DW8, The Crew, and Kingdom hearts 3. Plus, I feel Sony deserves my full fledge $400, as oppose to waiting for price cut, like I usually have for previous consoles.

I am 100% in agreement. I got my PS4 at launch because i knew i was going to get it anyway so what reason did I have to wait? I would simply say it depends on your financial situation. If you can afford to get it then do so IF you anticipate buying one. I'm not happy with no DLNA or external HD support but I am sure it's coming and I still have my PS3 doing most of the heavy work mediawise anyway. I have one retail game (Madden, which I also have the PS3 version) and i rarely play it but waiting would get me what? Nothing IMO so for me, it was a no brainer.

I'd say it depends on how much other stuff you have to do. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase -- but I know that I'm an early adopter and as an early adopter of 5 or 6 systems now, I know what to expect.

I think if you just want to play as many great games as possible, you could hold off another 6 months or so. There's plenty of gas in the ps3's engine, and a lot of missed gems.

It really comes down to how excited you are for the games that are coming out in the next few months. It's still expensive, availability is tight and there're still probably games for PS3/360 that you probably haven't played yet. Unless you have a burning desire to play Second Son or the MGS V demo then you can safely hold off.

If you're the kind of person who likes video games? Yes, of course you should buy one, there is no better time then the present!

Also the graphics are so much better in the next-gen versions of multiplat games.

My question to people who are "waiting" is "What, you don't like games?"

Its not that i don't like games and gaming. I just generally wait for the MK2/V2/Gen2 of consoles. That way they work out launch bugs and kinks. I'm dying to get one tho.

Heck I still have my 2nd gen PS3 fatty. And in working order (with BC). Only real reason I'm waiting. That or destiny comes out before next round of PS4s

Most people have plenty of gaming options other than the select few that are offered on the PS4/XB1. So it isn't just about whether or not a person like games.

It makes more sense to give the PS4 time to grow both with a gaming library and with updates that allow it to offer the same functionality of the PS3.

I like games so much I buy them faster than I can play them... and I still have 4 in shrink wrap... so I'm gonna wait.

I would say wait. There are so many great games still offered for the PS3 that I can't imagine a person (except for hardcore gamers) not having plenty of options with the PS3. I'd suggest most people wait to buy the system during the 2014 holidays.

I realize that but whats the point of paying top dollar for a system that's just going to collect dust while the average gamer plays the enormous amount of games for the PS3?

I'm not going to go out and buy another meal when I have plenty still left on my current plate.

I wouldn't say I'm waiting. It's not really a choice I made. I had it given to me. It was either keep my pre-order of the ps4 or do a once in a lifetime trip of travelling Australia and New Zealand for 12 months...so I'll get it when I get home!

But I would suggest to them to get it now, purely because, if they are already of thinking of getting one, and are in the store asking you about it, they've pretty much already made up their mind

I don't really need it yet. I have very few games on my radar right now that are next gen. They are, Infamous: Second Son, EA Sports UFC, The Order, & Watchdogs. Everything else is sort of ehhh for me right now. With that said, however, I'd be singing a different tune if I were playing Shadows Fall or Thief on the PS4. I'll have it eventually, when is the question.

I'd tell them to jump on it. Mainly because they are hard to find and next because while it's an investment there are a ton of awesome games coming down the pipeline. Why be that person that has a hard time trying to find one when there is a game you want to play. Just buy it now grab some of the games that interest you and enjoy one of the most powerful consoles on the market. Just don't get rid of your PS3. :P

Buy a ps4 if you have tons of extra money, if you want to invest in something new than wait.

I still don't see much worth the 400$ price unless you like fps's or indie games.

I'd still suggest waiting. Even if they've had the money to play all the more recent releases for the PS3 there's still no reason to put up that sort of cash right now.

I had a look at what was available and decided to play Fallout New Vegas again instead.

Wait til Playstation Now gets up and running. Have a massive library to choose from. That way, there's little chance of OK, great new system. Woo Hoo great game or two. Then blah. Nothing great. Hello eBay. Plus, give them time to read up on reviews, check out walk throughs, etc. Choose games to get. Look at past catalogues. Have an idea the games they want to get. Know what's coming out or available through Now. and if some games are cheaper, great. Maybe get a game of year. All the DLC's on disc, etc.

Good question. I'm trying to answer this one for myself right now. Aside from the games available right meow I can't seem to find an off the shelf $400 PS4. Haven't heard much to when Amazon is going to restock them selves.
You could tell them to hold off till GameStop restockes. I think that one is in the near future.

I wish I could them/my self that the NA Ground Zeros bundle is coming out soon. So far can't do that, but who knows.

wait, obviously!
theres nothing out now worth getting a ps4 for, and really nothing on the horizon that has a solid date for either.
id be waiting for the order or uncharted, but even though the orders suppose to be out this year, judging by the previews and technical troubles the games having, and SSms recent layoffs, im a little concerned its not going to happen.
one thing im really disappointed with this year by now we normally have a good idea of whats releasing and when, but we really dont have much.
after infamous second son, whats the next ps4 exclusive releasing?
exactly.
wait indeed!
hell, we STILL dont have a launch date for driveclub, a game that was suppose to be a launch title!
we dont even have a date for when playstation now will be coming to EU, or even when advertised launch features like utilizing the standby mode to save and resume games, will be available!
definitely, definitely, definitely wait!
in fact if second son ends up being a disappointment im thinking of selling mine, especially if ps4s continue to be hard to find and prices continue to inflate.
whats the point of holding onto something letting it collect dust when you could sell it for 200+ bucks more than a new one will cost you?

Personally I'm waiting. I'm one of those people that uses the console for everything, and one those "everything" is watching videos from an external drive.

Unfortunately, my home installation won't fit 2 consoles, it won't fit 2 of anything.

When I got the PS3, I had to remove the DVD player to install the PS3 in its place. (Fortunately, the PS3 plays DVD so I couldn't care any less)

So unless the PS4 can read external drives, I won't be able to get it since it won't have a place next to my TV. :(

I'll wait. Mostly because there aren't enough games on the PS4 that interest me. But also because, the first wave of consoles immediately after launch are normally more susceptible to hardware failures than the revised models that are released later.

Revisions may be great but at the same time, just remember that later revisions of the PS3 also "took away a lot of functionalities" too...
(PS2 BC, other OS, went from 4 USB ports to 2, did away with the "all" memory card reader, ETC, ETC, ETC).

So you may want to think about this too when deciding to wait or not for the PS4's revision too.

Just saying....

If they have the money and can find a PS4 I would say get one. BUT only if they were interested in futures titles. There aren't any games out on the PS4 right now that we haven't seen before so its not really like you are buying a next gen experience.

So I would basically just say if you are planning on getting one for some of the games coming out this year get one now, if not wait for a price drop or something.

If somebody were to ask me I'd tell them to look at the games that are available for the PS4, watch some Youtube videos to get an idea of what they're like, and then decide if that's worth $400 to them.

Personally I'll probably wait two years or so. I buy a console once it's well into the generation so I'll have a very good selection of games that will keep me occupied for the foreseeable future. And anything available on PC doesn't count towards that total.

If you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket, or a birthday or something coming up and someone is nice enough to want to get you something in that price range, go for it. It's an incredibly slick system and contrary to the belief of some, it has a great lineup of early games, especially in the smaller, downloadable "indie" style. MGS Ground Zeroes, Infamous Second Son are dropping in a few WEEKS, if AAA is your thing, too.

Having said that, if $500 is a lot of money for you right now, don't sweat it, keep saving up so this fall when games like Destiny, the new Batman and, i assume, the Order: 1886 drop, you'll be ready to jump in for the really, really big stuff.

I don't see a price drop happening anytime soon on the hardware. And if you plan on saving a few bucks on Black Friday, I don't see the games getting discounted much, either. Unless you have a large backlog on your ps3, or you have at least a medium spec'd pc, I'd say why not.
