... Speaking of The Order, did others see that gameplay video over at IGN here the other day? Let's put it like this: My pulse remained unchanged.

It looked very very "typical" Sony exclusive: Ultra-linear gameplay and even the dreaded QTE's at certain points. And what's worse is that it didn't look *that* impressive either. Decent animations and loads of particle effects, but the characters and environment felt kinda "uninspired".

Obviously it's from an early build and here's hoping things will be better in the end, but I think I can already say this is no game for me, based on what little I did see of the actual gameplay mechanics - cause that's sure not gonna change.

I think it was a big mistake publicizing The Order so much, so early. It's putting an incredible amount of pressure on the devs and raising people's expectations way too high. On the flip side though, if The Order still manages to impress then it truly is a great achievement.

I understand your hesitation with how little we've seen of the game but if it truly is a "typical" Sony exclusive than I'm happy-go-lucky. Playstation has the best exclusives.

Well, I only talk about the mechanics. Rails and QTE... that's not my idea of fun. And if we don't also get the typical Sony exclusive *polish* on top of that, well then they've lost this gamer.

But it *is* suspicious how little gameplay we've seen so far, and even that three minute video at IGN I refer to had mostly cutscenes and strictly edited gameplay with only short clips from different segments. Like they don't trust their own gameplay to impress.
I'm tellin' you guys... Things are not looking too good.

I agree with you fully on what has been seen so far and I also question how little we've seen thus far. But I think you're wrong to say it being the "typical" Sony exclusive has if it's a bad thing. Do you not agree that Sony has had the best exclusives?

To be totally honest I don't know the exclusives on the other platforms well enough to have a very educated opinion. Sony may for all I know have the best exclusives, but I don't generally think they are the best games.

But I really don't want to enter another discussion about the Sony exclusives - I've had some quite exhausting discussions about this in the past.
Let me just say that I have a big, very subjective and highly personal issue with both extreme linearity and QTEs in games, and of the games I've played that's been based on this most have indeed been Sony exclusives. So when now The Order seem to be built on that same model it's no big surprise to me - just very disappointing.

I'd probably rate LittleBigPlanet highest of the Sony exclusives. Those games are fantastic coop/platformers, exceptional productions.
Infamous is decent fun. It's a typical solid, mid 80s metascore game. But there's plenty of very good games found in that bag.

And the rest... Oh well. Each to our liking, right?

Year 1 exclusives on next gen aren't that much better than the last exclusives of the previous gen eg.God of war 2 on PS2 was as good or better than most early PS3/xb360 games.
2015 -2016 will see the true start of next gen...basically when uncharted on ps4 releases.

Beamboom: You should really stop automatically associating "linear" with "bad." Just because you don't like linear adventures doesn't make them inherently worse than more open-ended games.

I'm not even sure you realize it, but every time you mention a linear game, it comes across as if that's a universal detriment.

Beam,

I'm wondering why you're a Sony fan if that's how you feel about their exclusives? I'm not going to argue about your personal tastes but I'm confused why you support Sony.

Ben: For me a very restricted gameplay in an action game is never a plus. Simple as that.
If the story and atmosphere is good enough - Metro Last Light stands out as a good example in this respect - I can ignore being forced down the directors path, but it's never a plus.
But like I explicitly stated, this is very subjective, just my very personal opinion. It is also worth noticing that most of my favourite franchises are actually quite linear in their execution, but they strike a good balance: Bioshock, Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Crysis... But we never see anything like those as a Sony exclusive. Sadly!

LV: I'm a Sony fan because of their hardware (and also their company profile). I love their phones, their TVs, their consoles.
When it comes to games all my biggest favourites are multiplat and could just as well have been played on a PC or (god forbid) Xbox. But now with the PS4 Sony got the best console to enjoy the multiplats as well so the choice of console really is a nobrainer for me.

So yeah - it's the hardware. Sony is in my eyes a hardware company. And a jolly good one at it.

I appreciate an open world and I love exploration.

It's kind of disappointing to me to hear how some incredible value in a linear game can be lost on someone just because they can't venture off the beaten path. TLOU comes to mind.

Beam,

Great explanation. I can't possibly counter anything you said. I'm also a big fan of the hardware. Mainly consoles and TVs. I have several PS3s and they've made every room in my house a media center. I do feel bad though that you don't care for games with a linear approach. I'm all for open-world gameplay but I also find linear gameplay has its own positives. Especially regarding story and character development.

Yeah it's my loss, it really is.

I don't know, maybe it has something to do with me being a big movie fan. If I just want to be served a good story I go where I get real live actors doing real performances with perfect pacing and superior visuals: The movies. You just can't beat that. To sit there and watch a game with its stiff faces, awkwardly animated sequences and a narrative chopped up by gaming sequences - often repeatedly - is just not the same. It can't be!

When I do my gaming I seek something else: I want to participate, influence, shape and contribute to the story. Take over the main role. Do what I can't do with the movies. It's just an entirely different medium.

I guess that's a sort of explanation - it's the best I can come up with.

Hmmm, is that "370,000 sold in Japan since its launch on February 22" set in concrete????

I would've thought that sales there would've been a million+ by now.

Just my 2 cents....

I was thinking the same, or at least much higher than 370,000 since the opening weekend sales were around 320,000. But maybe that's all the PS4s that have been available in Japan so far.

In any case over 2 million more PS4s have been sold than Xbones.

That figure is just over a 48hr period of sales in Japan. Unless I'm mistaken which I don't think I am.

I think that 30 games should have an asterisk next to it. Not that indie games shouldn't or don't count (they are essential for the future of gaming in my opinion), but they are rarely system sellers and that's what matters at this point.

This is great news for Sony. I don't mean to wish ill-will on a company, but I hope the PS4 continues to bury the XBone in the sales department.

Here's to the 6 million PS4 owners out there spending money on the software, specifically speaking, the exclusive ones!!

I agree. I'm all for competition because it only creates better products for all but MS doesn't deserve to excel on the gaming side of things. I hate what they did to Rare.

Great point about Rare LV...

I was always saddened over the fact that the Uncharted series (for example) didn't shift over 10 million copies each edition.

I'm also in favour of competition but the direction MS was/is going with gaming is not at all good for the industry. I think Sony is doing things right, they acknowledge that gaming has progressed and that casual gamers love the gimmicks and social stuff but they aren't leaving their hardcore fans in the dust either. And they aren't doing anything half-assed either.

I know this sounds very fan boyish but really it's just respect and support for a good product.

M$ have shown little value for gamers ever since Xbox Live became mainstream. If M$ leads the gaming industry, they will have no hesitation to rip off gamers to the best of their ability.

Congrats Sony! This is what happens when you sell the most powerful console at $100 cheaper than the competition. Having such a diverse library of games with the masterpiece Dual Shock 4 doesn't hurt either. This new gen is all but wrapped up if Sony stays the course and keeps practicing business the way they have in recent years. You could almost call it a slam dunk.

I would argue that investing in Sony stocks is a terrible idea.

Technology is a gamble trying to buy low and sell high. They are never good long-term holdings, and their reputation for paying dividends is sporadic at best.

I wouldn't invest in any company similar to MS and Sony. If I -EVER- did technology, it would be early in a company's life. But I won't.

You want to make big bucks investing? Invest in boring companies. The richest and most consistently dividend paying companies are the most boring. Card board box makers... utilities... financial institutions (not US ones, though), telecommunications, Fast Food chains, etc....

They are working to have different paths so it's not the same kind of linear as Uncharted, but obviously any game with a single story is going to be basically linear.

That's great news that Sony has sold 6 million ps4's, but my question is, how many would they have sold if there were more available?

It's so hard to find a ps4 for sale and when someone gets them in stock, they sell out in just a few hours.

not really, $ony stores have had them in stock since launch!
ive sold countless on ebay since launch none of them preorders just random purchases from their website and selling them on ebay for 200+ bucks more.
$onys restricting stock to retailers to make them LOOK like their in short supply, and thus keeping the revenue within the company instead of letting retailers do their dirty work.

so sad and worrying to see the industry in such a good place, new consoles selling like hotcakes, a non occurrence ever, but then in such a bad place with all the layoffs and such.
cant help but think these things should of been out YEARS ago and that really would of changed the outlook of the industry.
