Is There A Crazy Amount Of Pressure On inFamous: Second Son?

Sure, the PlayStation 4 is doing well. 6 million in less than 4 months is fantastic.

However, there's no denying that many gamers are still disappointed with the available net-gen software. Furthermore, they're annoyed that the titles we do have don't feel very "next-gen-y." Considering all this (and not forgetting that Titanfall releases this month), is it fair to say that inFamous: Second Son is under a lot of pressure to deliver? Or rather, is it Sucker Punch that's under the gun...?

Many are pinning their hopes on the inFamous sequel, believing it will be the first true example of a "next-gen video game." The hype has been building steadily for the past year, and there's no doubt that expectations are absolutely through the roof. However, when you examine the current situation, expectations might be even higher than we initially estimated. Think about it: A PS4 exclusive, widely believed to be freakin' amazing when it hits, and basically going up against an Xbox exclusive that is bound to be massively huge.

With less-than-stellar launch lineups for the two new systems, we're still waiting for the games that make us go, "WOW, now that's next-gen!" For a great many, inFamous: Second Son is supposed to be that game...at this point, I hope it is. If it isn't, the backlash is gonna be pretty significant.

Not really. It's the first big exclusive but Sony doesn't seem to be particularly disappointed about the way that things are shaping up. Frankly, I think that the delay of Watch_Dogs was probably a bigger deal. That would have been a killer launch title but the PS4 has succeeded anyway. The games will come and there's no particular pressure on Second Son to be the one killer app.

I disagree, Second Son is both exclusive to Sony and supposedly not possible on PS3. Watch Dogs will be cross gen and third party. If SS isn't big then there's going to be no games requiring a PS4 for some time and probably less interest in The Order when it comes time for that.

Second Son is the next installment in a series that quite a few (myself included) really enjoyed but neither of those games was a huge seller. Second Son might be good but it's not the kind of thing that Sony would pin it's hopes on. Watch_Dogs is cross-gen and multi-plat but it had some real buzz behind it. If you're going to play it then why not buy it for the system that it would look best on?

Gaming PC's are the most expensive of all platforms? I don't understand your comment?

Also, Infamous SS is going to be a completely different situation to the previous games.

Killzone was the first exclusive, but that was an FPS, it launched with 3 others. Infamous SS is the first non FPS exclusive, people are waiting for that exclusive PS4 game that will justify their purchase. It is MUCH more likely to be picked up by people who don't necessarily have an interest in the series, because what else is there to play right now besides MP games?

There is definitely pressure on Infamous SS to move more PS4's.

I think it's almost a perfect storm of doom: way too much pressure, not enough hype, and everyone's expectations for it to be something that is so next gen it's worth having bought a PS4, plus the fact that inFamous was never a huge exclusive franchise even though it was one of the best all add up to unfairness. It will have to pull mostly 9s somehow in an environment where everyone is salivating over big robot cod.

Couldn't agree with you more, which is sad, because both Infamous games have been great and I fully expect Second Son to be as well, but in all honesty, it won't surprise me if it doesn't sell huge numbers.

I have a buddy that just recently got a PS3. Just a little backstory, he is recently divorced and missed out on last generation because of his crappy marriage. Anyways, I hooked him up with a bunch of my older PS3 games and he's been enjoying them for the past month. His favorite series...inFamous. He's buying a PS4 for this game.

You're welcome Sony.

COD with mechs or inFamous with a fresh coat of paint? inFamous is a great series and I'm looking forward to what is possible thanks to the PS4. I wouldn't say there is pressure. There hasn't been an enormous amount of hype surrounding the game like Titanfall. Plus while inFamous is an exclusive Titanfall isn't, lets make that clear.

I don't think so at all. I think this game is right where it should be in that regard. Maybe some people are putting to much pressure but the industry as a whole isn't at all. Thanks to Titanfall, infamous will get to enjoy a good launch and is positioned to be great. They've done a good job in not saying this will be better than EVER and just slamming it down our throats.

Those who put that rype of pressure on a game are those who are usually let down. If its no worse than eith of the last two games I know im gonna get just what I thought I would. Of course with better graphics.

As much as I could talk about inFamous right now, I REALLY want to take this opportunity to say "what in the actual hell?"

Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog. My mind is blown.

I don't want to take from the quality of the Infamous franchise but I don't think it's got the pulling power to bring new gamers into next gen unless they've played the last gen titles. Sure it will bring in a few new people but the series feels to me to be comparable to the Resistance franchise, great games but just not getting the recognition they deserve and only pulling in audiences already familiar with the games. Being a sequel won't help bring in new people either as some people tend not to want to jump into a franchise three games in without having experienced the previous games. Even if there's a new hero / villain and story arc. I'm hoping it will do well but I'm not optimistic that it will be the system seller some are hoping for. Titanfall at least has the CoD shooter market behind it and more power to it but imo Infamous won't compete.

The fact that Infamous is one of the very few PS4 exclusives right now means that it is NOT going to be a situation like the previous games.

This is the perfect opportunity for the Infamous franchise to become bigger, and attract more fans. After this title, they won't get another chance till next-gen.

People who previously wouldn't care, might buy Infamous SS just because it is something unique on the PS4, and isn't an FPS.

of course its got allot of weight on its shoulders, its the first game that actually looks worth buying a ps4 for!
its got VERY big shoes to fill, and thats exactly why im so worried for it, i just cant see it filling them.
adding more pressure onto it, once its out, whats the next thing to look forward to?
driveclub?
no thanks, ive got that on my PC, its called facebook!
the order?
thats not releasing till the end of the year!
exactly why this has to hit it out of the park, because if it doesnt, theres a long wait for something else to take its place!

This game - if as good as I got a feeling it will be - is the first clear system seller for me.

I will still have patience to wait until there's at least 2-3 games I really really want to play on the PS4, but Infamous introduces the first push for me to get me that new console.

I suppose there's a lot of pressure on this developer with this game, but the same could be said for every AAA game coming out early in a generation when there's not much else available.

As long as next gen games continue to be identical to last gen games except for prettier cinematics, people will feel as if they haven't played anything next gen yet. Gameplay needs to evolve to its next logical step. AI needs to no longer be dumb as dirt. Character animations needs to evolve beyond robotic stick figures that obviously aren't in contact with the ground.

Sony is on fire right now. I feel there is more pressure on Microsoft and Titanfall. If Titanfall bombs Microsoft's X1 will fall farther behind.

ISS will be a great super hero game. Even if it treads closely to the formula in the first 2 games, PS4 gamers will be happy. I think it's a if it's not broken don't fix it mentality they are taking with this game. We don't even know all the powers yet either.

If it does bomb, well, that would hurt a little bit. It won't stop gamers from buying the PS4 since it's $100 cheaper and the more powerful console. The benefit of owning and playing the best versions of multiplatform games is paramount to many gamers.

From the sound of it Titanfall is going to be a huge success. Good for Respawn as I hope it forces CoD and BF to be A LOT better in the future. I am looking forward to playing Titanfall 2 on the PS4.

This is pretty much the PS4's main exclusive. It's not one I care for personally, but it is clear to see a lot is riding on this and I think it will do very well. I still however think TitanFall looks more interesting out of the two console exclsuives and I hope it does very well.

This just isnt the exclusive I am looking for, previously I would say it is Final Fantasy or Metal Gear... but now they're multi-platform... gamewise both consoles look alike to me - my decision will me more on specs than anything, which is a shame as I tend to focus on the games more than anything.

Over on IGN theres an article about xbox betting hard on titanfall. It basically questions whether its wise to give such a potentially large game away for free at launch considering that the bundle pro-order has been outstripped by the ps4 infamous second son preorder, here in the UK.

Personally I think the pressure is there, but consumers aren't necessarily waiting to see if its good (naturally some are). The Hype train seems to be working pretty well. WHile there aren't that many commericals on TV, there are a ton on the web, before youtube vids, and on different websites, etc.

I'm certainly considering getting it day1 and i skipped infamous 2

Between the other exclusives, the controller, and the extra 100 bucks savings there was little doubt I'd stay with Sony, as I have since ps1.

However Second Son is the real reason I got my ps4 at launch, the only generation I have done so.

I even switched my preorder to EB games just to get the Cole dlc.

I expect it to be great just like the other two. If it happens to be the most next-gen feeling experience to date than that's a pretty sweet bonus.
