Driveclub Returns To The Drawing Board

There's no point in producing a sub-par product, right?

Driveclub was originally announced as a PlayStation 4 launch title. Unfortunately, it suffered a delay that pushed it into 2014 and now, there's some question as to whether or not it'll even arrive this year.

That's because PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Scott Rohde told IGN that developer Evolution Studios has "gone back to the drawing board." This is due to the fact that, as it stands, the game would prove disappointing to PS4 owners. Said Rohde:

"What I will say is that it all comes back to that fundamental principle, and that's that we want to build great games. And we really don't want to release a game before it's ready. And sometimes, this happens in the normal course of business, where we think we're on track to deliver what we think is going to be a great game, and when we get closer, we realize that we'd be doing everyone a disservice if we shipped it before it was ready."

Rohde added that at PlayStation, "perhaps more than at other places," they're willing to eat the cost of returning to the drawing board, just so they can be certain of the product's quality when it ultimately ships. He didn't say if the anticipated PS4 exclusive would launch in 2014 but we've got plenty of other options for this year, right?

However long it takes to bring out a great product. Better than releasing one that is hella bojenky that would kill any hope of a sequel. Glad to see they are focused on quality and trying to do right by the consumer (and themselves).

I find it hard to believe that a launch game can go from a delay to a no comment when asked if it's coming out in 2014. WTF

Using the "drawing board" expression isn't good new for folks looking forward to this. You don't say that unless you gotta rebuild from the ground up. It has gone The Last Guardian on us it looks like.

Went from a launch title to the drawing board. I have no problem with them going to the drawing board, but when a game is show casing a system for launch the concept of what works should have already been established, if not then they shouldn't have felt comfortable to show case the game so early on at all.

Sony must have been desperate for content to show off if they announced it as early as they did.

Are you surprised? Every system release will have a couple titles that never really make it.

What happened was that the 3 Junkyard dogs tried to sink their fangs into the Evolution crew when they stopped by for the last of their parts.

So now they have to re-order everything all over again, but this time only using new brand name "OEM" certified parts.

Maybe I should let them know where they can get some new surplus Tuk-tuks on the cheap.

It doesn't sound like this game was even remotely as close as they said. I'm actually quite pissed because this is one of the games I was looking forward to the most. If they said they simply needed even a few more months that's one thing. But to say they are returning to the drawing board suggests the game is so far from release they shouldn't have even said anything. It says they are starting over with it in a sense.

I gotta tell ya as good as the PS4 launch was it could sink just as quickly. There's a lot of crazy things happening on Sony's side of the fence lately. I'm not amused by any of it.

Yeah...I don't know about this. It's not the only game to miss the launch window, but to publicly announce "Hey guys, guess what? We're starting over." What?

It's one thing to push a game back to get it 'right' and produce the quality of visuals it deserves, but if you have to go back to the drawing board after years AND millions of dollars spent, there is a much deeper issue with management and game design...

Well that comes as a small blow to the PS4 line-up. Gotta say that it was a pretty poor experience when I went hands-on with it at the EB Expo last year, though it was mighty pretty. There was no weight, nothing that I would call memorable and certainly no sense of fun. I think it's because the whole thing just felt weightless and completely arcade-y, even compared against NFS: Rivals.

This can only be a good thing. But if it's been pushed out of 2014, then what happens now with GTPS4? Does it get delayed to allow DriveClub to shine? Or will Sony/PD still be pushing to get it out in the 2015 calendar year? OR will a Prologue version be pushed out early to fill the gap left by DriveClub?

LOL, this is hilarious!
both comedic, and extremely disconcerting, that a game can be in development for so long, there last game released in 2011, and there were rumors of this coming late back as 2010!
its pretty worrying that a game that has been in development for this long suddenly wakes up a month before launch, after 2+ years of development, and says oh sh*t this just aint gonna cut it!
i mean it took you all those years to realize that!?
seriously!?
bit slow, no?

oh well hopefully they have realised that the best place for this is a open world racer, a NFS rivals but with a sim feel to it, and will try replicate that.
and please for the love of god back off with the social integration, weve had enough of that crap with NFS and autolog!
social, SP is MP, is exactly what destroyed rivals!
there seen, and treated, and expected, as two VERY different experiences for a REASON!

I agree whole heartedly with your comment.

If I want multiplayer I'll take it, If I want single player, I'll take that. Do not give me a poor hybrid of the two.

This is very disappointing. Now, the only game that I am truly looking forward to throughout the entire year is Mario Kart 8.
Seriously, Mario Kart 8 should be a side quest, not a full blown thing. Yet, this industry is just so dull now. There are no games that I actually care about.

At least I'll save some money... so, that's a plus.

Maybe there was so much focus on multiplayer that someone sensible pointed out that the game would feel a bit hollow and so they're reworking it.

There seemed nothing wrong with the graphics and I'd find it strange to come up with a physics issue at this late stage.

Yep, I'm going with it being a story depth/quality problem.

IF it has a very strong single player it could be the game to get me to buy a PS4. Frankly I'm not seeing anything else right now to sway me.

"Back to the drawing board" sound like a year at least if not two. Meh, if it wasn't arcadey and based around online play I might actually care.

If I'm not mistaken, this "back to the drawing board" thing was an explanation on the initial delay. It doesn't mean that the game has suffered yet another delay. There was a meltdown on NeoGAF regarding this thing and, boy, was that hilarious.

I think the whole thing is taken out of proportion. If it's really going back to the drawing boards, then they would just say so more straighforward. Something as drastic as square one isn't exactly something you would want to hint at.

Driveclub was already delayed once, and now it's delayed again?? And not only that, but they're "going back to the drawing board"?!

Man, this project is giving me bad flashbacks of early PS3 fiascos like the ever-delayed The Last Guardian..

Seriously annoyed by this. Since I bought my PS4 I've wanted a decent racer.

NFS is the ONLY racer on PS4 at the moment. WTF like!!

Seriously considering setting up my PS3 again at the moment and letting my PS4 for another few months until the software side of things gets sorted which sadly has never happened me with any other system I've owned.

No. It isnt in my opinion. They need to go back to the customisation part like they had in NFS old school days.

I find playing NFS games towards the end of last gen and this one more tedious than fun.
