Watch Dogs Graphics Comparison Video: What Happened?

This could end up being a PR nightmare for Ubisoft, provided all the footage in question is accurate.

Ever since new gameplay footage of the hugely anticipated Watch Dogs hit the Internet, people have been wondering: What happened? They ask this question because the leaked footage doesn't appear to be half as good as the mind-blowing presentation we saw at E3 in 2012. Now, to highlight the differences, a comparison video has surfaced.

As you can see, there's a significant contrast between the two pieces of footage. It's all the more disappointing because the new gameplay supposedly comes from the PlayStation 4 version of the game. So, what do you think? Are people just blowing this all out of proportion? Does the game still look amazing? Or, do you simply not trust that the leaked footage is reminiscent of the final product?

Watch Dogs is set to launch on May 27. Guess we'll find out then.

Hopefully it's been misreported and is actually last gen footage.

Or just maybe, they had to dumb it down to run it on the Xbone. Who knows if the Xone can really run an open world game like Watchdogs with all those details...

Lets hope that inst the final footage because that looks like late PS2/early PS3 graphics...

Okay, while it's definitely a step back it's nowhere near late ps2-early ps3...it's actually pretty good for last gen, but simply unacceptable for the PS4.

I disagree Matt. Look at that solid state car floating along, those drab and flat surfaces on everything, the lack of detail. It's not even on par with GTAIV.

Yeah, sorry Matt but maybe a PS3 game from 2007.

Yeah, I gotta agree with Jak up there. That has to be last gen compared to next gen. Or next next gen, however you want to say it.

I would hope it is last gen, but I imagine if it was last gen wouldn't the devs/ ubisoft be quick to respond to this criticism?

I'm calling BS. While I don't expect the PS4/Xbox versions to look as good as the E3PC demo there is no way they will look this poor. If that's the case than it's the fault of the developer, not the system.

Definitely. But then again there's quite significant differences between Nvidia and ATI chipsets. Nvidia is more "brute force" while ATI chipsets are more elegant but complex, and if Nvidia is the chipset they have primed their code for then the ATI chipsets *will* suffer.

It is. They sold the game on graphics to ratchet up expectations and generate buzz but now as they get near launch, they're trying to ratchet them back down again. The only unusual thing here is the level of the backlash. They clearly didn't anticipate that. The graphics of the new trailer don't look too awfully bad compared to PS3/360 graphics; they only suffer in comparison to previous trailers and that's just sad. Sad in the sense that they had to misrepresent what the game looked like and sad that only now are we beginning to see that that's exactly what they've done.

Hahahaha puny humans and your peasant boxes. But seriously, the footage looks like what you see when there is a bts of a videogame and there is a work in progress image on a computer screen. I'd say this is the product of Ubisoft playing with resolutions. Trying to find that sweet HD spot. In any case if they don't release another video with better looking graphics before the game releases, the game will not have a chance.

For them to say there's been no change is pretty insulting.... (Have they changed their stance on this?)

They should have just released it on schedule, now all this extra time has allowed a major problem to arise. Sunk by a scandal.

I'll reserve judgment until we see something more definitive on the issue. I have enough interest in the game that I'm willing to pick it up on day one, but now I may wait until this issue is clarified.

so funny how ubisoft just showed off PC demos every single time, everyone was so impressed, then the game gets delayed for months, finally we see a revival trailer, and its the first time weve seen the ps4 version, and everyone is disappointed.
so, this is the reason they refused to show off the ps4 version?
correction, whos to say the games been downgraded?
weve never seen the ps4 version before this, so we have nothing to compare it to.
so, i guess this confirms the disappointments and worries that next gen consoles really are nothing but 4 year old low end PCs!
so disappointing, i miss the good old days where new consoles were actually offering MORE than PC, not the same, not less, and certainly not less than a several year old PC!
now, ubisoft, to shut this up, hurry up and release a new high end full bells and whistles PC demo, and i swear to god if its not like the E3 2012 demo, you better build yourself the worlds strongest nuclear bunker because your gonna NEED it!

It can't possibly look like that when released. A lot of the differences can be explained by the lighting and video quality I think. Like, the older trailer is during nighttime, which creates more interesting contrast anyway due to all the funky lights. Still, some parts do look awfull...

The difference ? one using a PC dev kit (2013 ) and the other one is actually on a ps4 (2014) .

There is parts in the video comparing older PS4 gameplay to the recently released footage of the game and there is a significant reduction in quality

I really don't get these graphic comparisons online. I mean they are uploaded to youtube most of the time and are compressed to save space. Ign does these all the time and they usually don't really showcase what any platform can really do. I think it's going to look great. For all we know, it could be an alpha version of part of the game. I'll hold my reservations until i actually see the game on and actual hd tv screen.

From what I understand and heard it is that Microsoft forced Ubisoft!! Microsoft supposedly made Ubisoft tone down the PS4 version to match the XO

That new footage really looks terrible, flat and low-res, hardly looks decent for a last-gen game, and certainly not close to so-called "next-gen"..

Well unfortunately we're just in the beginning of the new gen, and it's just getting uglier & uglier...

I really don't understand what Sony and even more so Microsoft were thinking when they finalized the specs for next-gen consoles. That said this is just way below par for what the PS4 should be able to handle...

Most likely just high end PC footage vs console footage. You throw a few Nvidia GTX Titans in SLI into a PC with a Core i7-4770K and 16GB RAM and you're creating footage on a machine that's about 20 times more powerful than a PS4 (for about 7 times as much money but if you're Ubisoft you don't have to worry about that).

Ubisoft actually does this all the time. Go look at comparison videos for Far Cry 3 between E3 and even the eventual PC retail version, and while it's not as bad as this (because it's comparing PC to PC, not PC to console), it's still pretty obvious:
