Is Titanfall The Killer App System Seller Xbox One Needed?

Okay, Titanfall has arrived (at least for the Xbox One) and thus far, it appears to be a critical success.

With an average Metascore of 87, the game is definitely a winner in the eyes of reviewers. However, there might be some room for debate, simply because the game hasn't earned that elite average score of 9+. It's close, though, and many are saying the freshness of this multiplayer experience is well worth the cost of admission.

However, is it good enough to become the first true-blue system seller for Microsoft's Xbox One? The system is behind the PlayStation 4 in the global sales tally; for all we know, it might even be behind in the US. Sony's update of 6.3 million units sold is all we've got to go on, as Microsoft hasn't released official updated numbers since saying the Xbox One sold 3 million units as of December 31, 2013. Let's just assume the Xbox One remains behind, and perhaps by a significant margin.

So, will Titanfall allow Microsoft to close the next-gen gap? Is it the multiplayer revolution everyone wanted? Or, even if it's not a "revolution," per se, is it just a great game that, while not doing anything too evolutionary, remains a gem? The other part of this question involves the PS4 exclusive inFamous: Second Son, which launches on March 21. Does one have any bearing on the other? Perhaps; perhaps not.

What say you?

I used to think that Titanfall was going to be a HUGE system seller, but now I'm starting to think that everyone that was excited for Titanfall got a Xone close to launch.

MS has been mum on the sales figures for a few months now - even going so far as saying they SHIPPED 4 million consoles, and that was not long after reporting the 3 million sold mark and after so many accounts of unsold Xone product crowding shelf space at stores.

Meanwhile, Sony reports 6.3 million units SOLD.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Well I can tell you that for the past 3 months if you went into any wal-mart within 50 miles of my house they had zero ps4's in stock and at least 3 xone's in stock.

That alone seems bad, but all the wal-marts have signs up front all over saying "we have xbox ones in stock" It looks desperate, please buy our xboxs they are getting dusty.

According to NPD, the PS4 outsold Xbone by nearly a two-to-one margin in January. So, Microsoft isn't doing so well in it's stronghold of North America and based on what I've read elsewhere they aren't doing so well in the UK, which was the other market where they had done well last gen. They're going to spend this entire generation playing catchup and Titanfall won't do more than budge the needle.

I wish it was on PlayStation and I'd buy it on that, but its not, so the Xbox will do. The game is fun and I can't wait to get back into it. I am by no means a CoD person nor a multiplayer only person. Well hopefully when titanfall 2 lands the people that skeptical can play it on the ps4 and enjoy a fun multiplayer.

I am really looking forward for destiny as well. Sony needs to tout that game up a lot I think.

Don't plan to play it so I can't say, but things are going as I expected. Good scores, nothing amazing. I think as reality sinks in and the hype dies we will see that it isn't any kind of big system seller. It will prompt some to upgrade earlier than they planned to is all, but since it's on 360 too it won't be that big of a deal. I hope Respawn team makes some good dough off it though.

Still not sure what to think about Second Son, I know it'll be great but the sales question is still up in the air. Sucker Punch put a deliberate moratorium on the game's content so we would have more surprises. The tradeoff is that there's less hype and fewer people know about it. However it could still explode by virtue of being the first true next gen PS4 experience (Shadow Fall just wasn't) on a console that a lot of people own.

Hoping for a smash success, SP deserves it.

I read an article with the developers earlier today from ventureBeat(I think it was.

They stated that it's coming out in 762 & plus that the frame-rate sometimes stutters when it gets totally busy on-screen with the spaceships above includied in the chaos too.

They also said that they have a plan to patch it up to somewhere into the 900's & get a constantly steady frame-rate, but as of now, they're not sure when the game will be ready to patch.

Sounds to me like it's just another game where it's more of the "Lets get it out & we'll fix everything later" kind of mentality.

I would've thought better of Respawn than to let a game out the door that isn't 100% knowingly polished.

But if it's the fault of M$, then...."HEY", it's they're own fault because they're the ones who decided to stay under the sheets with M$.

titanfall selling some console, yes. a real system seller, it wont be. here is their problem, the people who really want titanfall, already bought an xbox one. reason is the people who buy xbones already bought it because of halo or wanted to upgrade their call of duty ghosts. unfortunately for microsoft, the target audience for titanfall is the very same audience for halo or cod. which means they already bought or already planning to buy an xone. thats mostly because microsoft focused so much on the tiny amount of exclusive games than getting more top quality and different genre games. the top 3 exclusives on 360 had overlapping audiences.

that and being available for 360 and pc doesnt say "only available on xbox one" which gives people an option. they dont need to buy an xbone to play the game.

i was interested in titanfall when i saw it. they announced no campaign and a 6vs6 multiplayer with bots. those didnt appeal to me. 10vs10 without bots wouldve been good. i just see alot of boosting with bots, like everyone agrees to justkill bots and not other players. game would draw in casuals because the can feel like their doing wellbecause most enemies would be AI. i dont see hardcore players playing the game for a long time. i know i will get tired of shooting AI all the time. reason i stopped playing borderlands 2 after beating vault hunter mode.

There is a campaign, but it plays out during the multiplayer fights. The bots make the fights larger then the 6v6 matches that they would've been. Plus you can hack the enemy bots to help fight for your side. Obviously you haven't tried, or fully researched, the game. The AI are just there to make fights seem larger. They are no where near the threat that the opposing players are. This game is way more intense than any other shooter out there, and hardcore players will be playing for a long time to come. Especially with three expansions on the way.

clearly youdidnt bother to understand what i said and trying to justify titanfall to youself. of course i didnt try or research more because those were the main deal breakers for me so no point getting into it.

there is a campaign and it plays in multiplayer? thats not campaign, thats backstory. i can say definitively that cod has infinitely better single player campaign than titanfall because it doesnt have one. titanfall is a multiplayer only game. singleplayer campaign is completely different from multiplayer.

AI is AI.. they have set parameters of movement. you say that theyre no threat compared to human players and thats just not acceptable. they are just environment you can use to boost your score. shooting at AI gets extremely boring because they arent able to react as human players do.

AI makes games feel larger? why would i want to feel like a game is larger than have an actual larger game. i play battlefield and those games are large and doesnt need to feel large. they sad their excuse was so that everyone can use titans and i call that just a cop out. they could set timers for titan spawns and how long another player could summon their next titan.

fact is that i dont want a game that feels big by throwing unneccesary things in it. if bf4 can have that much things in it and its multiplatform, why cant titanfall do it as an exclusive? clearly i said i was interested in titanfall until their announcements that were a complete dealbreaker to me so i dont pay attention to it anymore.

Titanfall is very appealing and will help Microsoft sell consoles but it won't rack in the numbers they predict. As many have said, early adopters bought the XBOne solely for this game. Microsoft is also releasing it 2 weeks prior to the Xbox 360 launch just so impatient gamers will fork out the cash for the bundle (with Titanfall free) instead. This is honestly their biggest chance at catching up to the PS4, in terms of sales and popularity.

Anyhoo, I think the games concept is great and the new play-style - wall-running, boosters - and mech battles will add a spark to a monotonous FPS genre...

It sounds like it's a good game. But probably not a system seller. I imagine a lot of pc and 360 players will get it while maybe it'll sell decent for XboxOne considering the amount of XboxOne out there.

My problem with Titanfall has nothing to do with how good it is or isnt. My problem is that it's a game developed by ex CoD developers and obviously has huge amounts of CoD type sequence gameplay, and people are saying it's "revolutionary" or different than other FPS games. The only think different is you can climb inside a mech. But it's essentially a tank in say BF4. But people are making it sound like it's again "new" and never been done. It's also irritating that it's online only offering half at best, what other games are and is the same price.

I would have expected also that it would have had stellar graphics considering it's on a next gen system also. Sounds like the XboxOne version doesn't look much better than the 360 version. I guess the guys at Respawn haven't learned anything since leaving IW.

It looks like exactly what I thought it would be: a really fun, well-executed game with some neat ideas in a genre I generally avoid. I would be happy to play it if it was on PS4, but it's not, so I'll probably pass. I do have a 360 still and feel no desire to play it on that platform at all, so I think that's a pretty indicative example of how gamers like me -- that is, gamers who don't really care for competitive multiplayer -- feel about it.

Titanfall seems like a textbook example of a game that is making a huge splash upon arrival... and is going to quickly be eclipsed and forgotten. Online multiplayer, competitive AND co-op, are going to be omnipresent this generation. Working as part of a team is not going to be the slighest bit unique. In a savvy bit of marketing, Sony launched a commercial yesterday featuring Destiny, that OTHER huge, high profile multiplayer FPS that is from the creators of modern console shooters as we know them. Elder Scrolls Online is, um, online. How many multiplayer FPS games are going to incorporate big robots from now on? And honestly, how long is it even going to be before the ienvitable Titanfall sequels comes out for every platform there is? Because even Microsoft is not going to have the financial resources to convince Electronic Frigging Arts to keep their property away from more than half of the console market.

The game looks cool, really. But the reviews suggest it's a well made FPS shooter with nice co-op and some cool new ideas. That's all well and good, but it's certainly not enough to make me want to plop down FIVE HUNDRED dollars, plus another $60 on the annual online subscription, for the privilege of playing it.

It may move some consoles. I really don't know how many more, since a lot of people bought the X1 for the futere exclusives (as I did with the PS4)

Online MP games have proven that are not the best way to go, examples Socom Confrontation and MAG.

A lot of people will be leaving Titanfall when the next COD or Halo is out.

I know I want to play Titanfall, but since I have already sold my 360, I won't be paying more then 500 bucks for a game, as I did the last gen to play Gears of War and Alan Wake.

I think I would not spend so much money for one game. imagine you need 60 bucks for a game, 50 bucks for Live subcription and 500 bucks for a console. In sum it will cost for me 610 bucks, but in europe it will be almost 700 euros (in some regions). PS4 killer apps do not need a psplus subcription, cause the MP is not needede for superb game. And for my opinion Titanfall is Unreal Tournament clone (only with giant mechs, other things are in UT too, like crazy weapons and story missions).

It's a really tough value proposition, especially when you have/are planning to get PS4. It's JUST Titanfall, there's nothing else remotely interesting about the Xbox One, and they make you buy that dumb kinect bar to boot. My gaming room doesn't even have cable! Why in God's name would would I want voice-activated channel changing ability? MS really, really screwed up making that bar mandatory.

So, I just spend that past several hours watching Titanfall on Twitch.
First of all, I love the graphics in it. The art style is very cool!

The gameplay, however, is a bit too chaotic. Coming from games like COD & Battlefield, I'm finding it very hard to follow exactly what is going on in front of me. Even the guy who was playing said he needed enough play time to be at least level 20+ to get used to it himself.
Being in a Titan is basically like being in a tank on Battlefield. You have extra firepower and extra armour. However, regular soldiers can quite easily take out a Titan, as opposed to a tank.
I was really wanting to like it more than I did, from what I saw. Oh well...

That said, this game should move several Xbox1s. But, I don't see this game having the same kind of following as CounterStrike or anything.

System-seller or not, MS have certainly thrown enough money at all avenues possible to ensure that most journalists are constantly pushing it, even in articles that have nothing to do with it.

They have also tried to remove the 360 version from public consciousness by just showing it as for XB1.

And now I guess they are trying to discourage the PC version via (maybe by pressuring Respawn to) a 48 GB install version, apparently for "uncompressed audio"?

Titanfall is also available to 360 and PC, besides on the X1. I'm willing to bet that a lot of Titanfall's sales will be on 360 version rather than of the X1. So it's probably not gonna boost the sales of the X1 that much. While Infamous: Second Son is a ps4 only game. If that game turns out to be good (which it should be), the ps4 sales will surely increase.

Its on too many platforms to push xbone units. It is a sort of fun shooter but I think its ideas aren't fully realized because of how casual it feels.

So many people are going to get this on the 360 and the PC, the ones with Xbones will get it on that but why would anyone buy an xbone for this game when they can get a 360 for like 100 bucks or so and then get the game for 60?
