Report: Sony To Reveal PS4 VR Headset At GDC Next Week

It seems the moment of announcement is nigh.

We've been hearing reports of a PlayStation 4 virtual headset for months, but Sony has yet to officially announce anything.

That day may soon be coming, though, as a new Edge report claims that the VR headset will be revealed next week at the 2014 Game Developers Conference.

The report adds that some third-party designers are already working on a prototype of Sony's VR headset, and these developers have said Sony's device is "far superior" to the first Oculus Rift iteration. It will be closer to the freshly unveiled Crystal Cove unit, in fact. Of course, there isn't much in the way of software just yet, but Sony is expected to show off some tech demos next week.

The announcement should come during the company's "Driving the future of innovation" session on March 18, where engineers from Sony's R&D division will explain the hardware. You ready for the virtual reality revolution?

Why do I feel me using this would be a brand new low?

Maybe this thing is why Driveclub went back to the drawing board.

If it doesn't work with Fallout I'm not interested.

Rumors were floating about that VR may correlate with SSM's new IP. Obviously, one of their new IPs was basically announced canceled, so it may very well be DrivelClub as the new showcase for the VR headset.

I saw a few sites earlier that rumored it will cost 1 penny less than a full grand

(PSSST...that's $999.99 for those of you who are really, really, bad at math)

Damn... and in Canada, we eliminated the penny. So that's a full grand for us if we pay cash!

As Bikersaint points out, I think this is gonna be crazy expensive. But if you've ever had the opportunity to put on an Oculus Rift, you know this kind of tech is very, very legit. VR gaming is around the corner, and it's only a matter of time before it becomes reasonably priced.

Yup, this tech is definitely legit.

They just *had* to do this. You can't have a console intended for the next 6-7 years without a VR set.

I hope this proves to be at least as good as Oculus Rift. I hope I will have to take a difficult decision on what platform to buy my VR set for.

Boombeam,

I read on a tech site that a leaker was stating that he had studied the specs on both the O.R. & Sony's VR sets.

He said that the O.R. set has gotten a serious downgrade since it's original specs(in order to get a $400-$500 price-point)and that the Sony VR set is 100 times better.

I don't know what the original spec was, all I know is that the OR devkit has undergone a serious *upgrade* since the original devkit. Much of the problems experienced with the original devkit (who we got at work) is gone including resolution, precision and the issue with "ghosting" in the image.

OK, now I'm not sure what to think but since it was a rumor, I always take them with a grain of salt.

Anywhos, thanks for the 411 there, Beamboom.

*And sorry about crucifying your handle in my other post, had been up for over 48 hours straight.

Really would like to see this be the reason Drive Club was delayed! Driving a car and looking around in real time would be amazing. This doesn't compete with Oculus because it's PS4 only. Oculus will rule the PC arena. Once Sony supports PS4 VR and it becomes a hit Microsoft will buy Oculus and bring it to the X1 and offer it for Titanfall in an update.

There is also something of great Significance going to be revealed on OPM. I am wondering if the PS4 VR is it?

FINALLY!
so, so, so hope this is at least a 2K OLED display with full motion tracking.
but i seriously doubt it, there are no 2K OLED displays out ATM, the samsung galaxy 5S was suppose to use one but apparently samsungs had allot of problems with it so were going to have to wait allot longer.
more likely $ony will use 2 1080P displays, has to be 2 instead of one otherwise you cut the resolution in half and your going to have the screen door problems occulus is having.

one big problem VR brings is obviously you cant see anything around you, so maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea to incorporate a camera and a feed into the display and a switch so you can switch between the camera real world feed, and the game.
that way you can see around you whenever you need to, without having to take the dam thing off.
i hate using the rift during the day whenever the phone rings i end up knocking my coffee over, knocking the keyboard on the floor, punching my monitor, trying to pick up the dam phone!
you have a mental picture of where things are but its amazing how quickly you forget.
or playing a horror game you get paranoid and keep taking the thing off so you can make sure theres no one behind you.
or even the most simple thing, taking your hands off the keyboard to put the dam thing on, than putting them back where you think WSAD and your mouse are, then they end up in totally different spots.
yea, a camera so you can see your environment around you would come in handy.

REALLY hope $ony has taken comfort feedback from their HMZ-T3 as well and put it towards this, i mean that things about as comfortable as sleeping on a bed of nails!
oculus is so comfortable after a few minutes you forget your wearing it!
so even if its allot more technically advanced than the rift its going to mean squat if its even half as uncomfortable as the T3 is.

whatever it is, $onys one goal with this should be to show the best of the technology possible, to put oculus rift to shame!
and to make it comfortable of course.
afterall they are one of the worlds largest electronic companies, well were.......
and oculus rifts just a startup company out of a freaking college students basement!
