Would A PS4 Announcement Overshadow Future PS3 Games?

So there's all this eager talk about Sony possibly unveiling the PlayStation 4 on February 20.

But although I'd be excited about it, I'd hate to see this announcement have a negative effect on the anticipation of upcoming PS3 games. Often, we're so quick to jump ahead to something new that we don't pay the current (or near-current) headlines enough attention.

If Sony does formally reveal the PS4 in three weeks time, I get this feeling that very important PS3 exclusives will suddenly take a back seat to all the new console hoopla. Games like The Last Of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, and even God of War: Ascension (which is set to launch in March) might get less hype and as a direct result, sales could be hindered. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new console announcement, as everyone is more than willing to discuss everything from the specs to the proposed price to the possible software launch lineup.

However, a PS4 unveiling would absolutely dominate headlines for quite a while, and might even do so for most of 2013, which I think would do a potential disservice to upcoming titles. I could be wrong, but I've often found that even the biggest games can fall under the shadow of new hardware, and I'd rather not have that happen, you know?

I don't think they will. To put it simply, those who are looking forward to those games will likely buy them anyway. Others probably didn't have that much interest in the first place towards those upcoming PS3 games.

I seriously doubt it unless Sony play by Apple rules announcing a new product then release it within a few weeks.

I think yeah it would, news coverage would slow down which makes me skeptical of this early-reveal stuff ya know?

I think it would overshadow everything. But one thing Sony has never done is let me down with hardware announcements. I bet they drop the price of the PS3 the same day they announce the PS4.

Will it be on the 20th of Feb? One can only speculate. I'm hoping the announcement is nothing more than games and they hold off on the PS4 stuff until E3.

Final Fantasy Vs. XIII, Metal Gear Solid Rising, Last Guardian, Two Souls, etc., are all games I'd still would like to play. However, if there are to be PS4 versions of these games, then I'm afraid the PS3 versions will suffer. Basically, only high profile games can really survive the next gen craziness, mainly because people will probably limit their purchase to these games to save a few bucks for next generation gaming.

We have to remember that not everyone will jump gun on the PS4 right away. The PS3 userbase is big and very much growing. They are going to want to buy games for it till they're ready to switch over to next gen. Also unlike last generation, the PS3 has an online community that should keep people more interested, since games are a bit relative towards how many people currently play it.

You have a point daus26. I will buy some upcoming games no matter what. But if some are for the PS4, then i'd have to get it for that system. I do hope it's b/c though

It would be cool if they then revealed that they've been tricking us all this time and that those hyped titles in fact are launch games for the PS4 - with new trailers showing off a *significant* improvement. :)

Because of the way Sony has handled God of War Ascension there isn't much hype anyways. Too many trailers focused on the mp and not enogh info on the sp campign have hurt this title.

GOD of War 2 came out in 2007 a year after ps3 was out, it sold "VERY" well

Not really, as many have set, I am sure people who are interested in them games will no doubt buy them anyway, just as people who are waiting for the reviews will also do so.Nowadays there is so much coverage for a game before a release its easy to tell what you want and don't want. if there are any PS3 games released at the same month of the PS4 launch, they would obviously suffer.

But, I am sure I am not the only one who cannot afford a new console at launch. I usually wait a year for the price to drop and the titles to build up. I know when the PS3 was released I was still buying Final Fantasy XII, MGS3:S +Online, Kingdom Hearts II, God of War II and a lot more. I was not put of buying such games due to the new console. Lets just hope the PS4 launch is more interesting this time. It took until 2008 for things to really cook up with the PS3.

of course not!
just because theres a ps4 announcement, whos to say there will be much to talk about anyway?
$onys not going to announce it, say this is the price, this is the release date, these are the specs, this is its launch lineup, this is its PSN integration.
they will announce it early to get hype up, and chances are the ONLY thing they will say is hey were working on the ps4, thats it!
like what they did with the vita, we knew VERY precious little till E3!
just how ninty announced the wiiu, then project cafe, months before E3.
$ony can go announce the ps4 whenever they want, it wont effect the sales of their games because 99% of them will be out by the time they start talking about them.
and even after that it wont effect them too much simply because the systems not out yet!
nor will we know when it releases.
everyones focus is always on the things that are closest, all the ps3 exclusives will be out well before we even hear of a launch date for the ps4!
not to mention 99.99999999999999% of people are not going to buy the ps4 for a year or so anyway because of all the issues new tech has.
high price, rumors will hit of a price drop causing people to wait, no games, sketchy features, poor support, low supply, ect, ect.
$ony can announce the ps4 whenever they want, it wont effect the sales of their upcoming ps3 games.

You sir are correct about waiting for the price drop. But there will be people lined up to buy it just like there are people lined up to buy the Iphone every year.

of course there will be, ill be front line center.
and those people will also be front line center for the last of, beyond, ect, ect.
point being the announcement of the ps4 will have very little, if any effect on ps3 exclusives!
O, forgot to mention they ARE exclusives so chances are if you want to play beyond, the last of us, ect, ect, you will need to buy the ps3 version i cant see them being cross platform.

Yes. But some games such as God of War, Beyond, or even the Last of Us will possibly sell less than expected. And a new PS4 if true, could and probably will be blame for the poor sales.

What's the alternative? Wait for every "important" exclusive to ship then announce? Sorry that doesn't work. Sony tried the "next gen starts when we say it does" approach last time. It didn't out so well for them. Showing up late to the game along all other kinds of problems Sony inflicted on themselves took them from undisputed market leader for two consecutive generations to fighting for a third of the pie with the PS3.

If Sony wants to get the jump on Microsoft then I'm all for it. It shows they have learned some lessons.

It wasnt the PS3 that made Sony lose billions. It was their company strategy as a whole.

Yeah, I am not 100% sure they are going to announce the PS4. However, if they don't it will be a massive let down of epic proportions! I also think it would be huge news for a few weeks and then taper off. There will still be plenty of coverage on said games. There are to many gamers that own a PS3 right now for these incredible new games to not get respect sales wise. Can't wait to see what Sony announces. I truly hope it's the PS4.

Most likely, depending on the release date.

But if the PS4 is backward compatible with the PS3, then no. The PS4 will just have a better launch line-up! =D

The days of backwards compatiblity are behind us my friend. Only thing PS4 will play BC is the digital games. Disc BC is no more Im afraid.

There were rumors that PS3 BC for PS4 would be made possible through the purchase of an addon.

Not really hodling my breath for this to be true, but if it was, I think it would be a smart decision on Sony's part, since that would give people the choice. If you value BC and it's important for you that your living room isn't filled with a countless number of consoles, you unplug your PS3 (sell it or whatever) and buy this addon.

If you don't care about that, you just don't bother...

I think it's a better proposition to give people choices.

Oh I sincerly hope BC is there. That was the source of much sadness for me when my 1st gen PS3 died and I had to get a new one. But with the way that companies are going, the length to which they try to slim down both the consoles and the costs, I dont see it happening. And unfortunately for me, means that Im gonna have to hold off on a new console until Im done playing all the PS3 titles I want to play.

The PS4 leaving out PS3 BC would render those HD-remake collections useless.. I'm sure they'll keep it for PSN's trophies and purchases. Only worry would be PS2 discs honestly.

Nah, ps2 games were still selling along with the ps2 console. Doubt its going to be any different for the ps3. Some families can't afford 2-300$ consoles so they buy the 100$ or less ones. With this unemployment problem we have, but the politicians would rather avoid the real issues and instead pretend video games are the REAL problem. So yeah, the lower income families will probably buy the ps3 since it will be much cheaper so i don't see it being overshadowed at all.

I think it would only hinder PS3 hardware sales, especially if the PS4 is backward compatible: Why buy a PS3 now when the PS4 with PS3 compatibility is available in the fall?

I could see it Ben. But obviously GTA5 and COD will still sell. But some games could be overshadowed.

As far as Beyond... did Heavy Rain do extremely well? Maybe Quantic is just one of those game companies that a few years from now we shall say produce great games, but never got its due from consumers like it should.

God of war 1 was released in March of 2005, the ps3 was announced in May of 2005. Jump ahead a couple of years, and the PS3 is released at the end of 2006, with God of War 2 being released for the PS2 after in 2007.

The thing to keep in mind is that GoW 1 sold 4.5+ million units worldwide, and GoW 2 sold slightly under that, (about 4.25 million units worldwide). I think it did pretty well considering there was a shiny new system that was available to the public.

I will probably be an early adopter of the new PS. On the other hand, I'll still be buying GTAV, Beyond, The Last of Us, .... (and Luigi's Mansion 2 .... I know, off subject, but damn I'm excited for that game). Until the first, second, (or fourth even) price cut, alot of people will be waiting to buy the new system. My triplet brother JUST received his first PS3 this past Christmas from his wife and I. There are always holdouts, and they will still be buying games for the older system.

Hell, I still buy Sega CD games when I see em.

Ha, looks like us Saint's think alike when it comes to gaming.

I was still buying many games for my Intellivision, Jaguar, 3DO, Ninty64, GC, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast consoles among assorted others, plus a bunch of games for all of my retro hand-helds till I lost my job in Spring of 2011.
