PS4 Info Keeps Rolling: Controller, Specs, Launch Target

Yup, the PS4 information (none of it official just yet, though) keeps rolling.

The latest apparently comes from reputable sources as cited by Edge, and it involves both the PS4 controller and the proposed specifications.

First, the previously rumored "Share" button featured on the new controller will let users publish screenshots and video on the Internet. It seems the system will actually record the most recent 15 minutes of gameplay - and at no processing cost - and then you can edit and share that footage with friends. Furthermore, another previous rumor has apparently been pseudo-confirmed: The PS4 controller will boast a rear touchpad reminiscent of the PlayStation Vita.

As for the hardware itself, the console will supposedly be more developer-friendly than the PS3 (which is good news) and it'll feature 4GB of RAM (potentially 8GB in a final configuration) and be capable of moving data at 176GB per second. One source claimed the new PlayStation would be "slightly more powerful" than the Xbox 720 and "very simple to work with." And lastly, it seems the PS4 will launch in Japan and the US before the holiday season; the European release will follow in early 2014.

So what do you conclude from these details?

I don't know how things are on you guys parts of the world, but over here the next PS is really getting a foothold in the media now - and the attitude is *very* positive.
So the often claimed "media bias against Sony" do at least not seem to be present in this case.
Quite the contrary.

It was just SO right of Sony to start the show like this. I sense the beginning of a very successful launch program here! I really do!

As long as it can top Ps3 exclusives in quality and I can play videogames with my buddy online who lives on the other side of USA, they can do whatever they want. Im just hoping Rockstar☆ releases some info on Agent. It's driving me crazy.

In addition, let's hope they do announce the Ps4 on Feb 20. My gut tells me that they wont, though. But it doesn't matter because this time around, im going to squeeze everything out of my Ps3. I still have a grand backlog of games that I've yet to play. Including UC3.

I thought I was the only one hoping for Agent. I was hoping for Sony's the Agency too, but they scrapped that, and there were some good ideas there.

Although I doubt I'd ever make much (or any) use of it, the video capturing and editing function sounds really neat. I can see how some players would be very excited about that.

I'm very leery about the touchpads though. I don't have a Vita, so I must admit to no first hand knowledge of how it works, but it strikes me of being similar to the six axis (in terms of ease of use, not functionality) which I HATE. However, I have a strong bias against messing with the controller in any way. The DS3, though perhaps not perfect, has been extremely effective for nearly 20 years. It's broke and needs no fixing.

I agree - that video cap thing can be *really* cool.

Back when I was a PC gamer I was part of a GTA community that created GTA stunt videos, showing off our skills (and editing abilities). There was some really insane videos being made back then.

If the video editing feature of Orbis will enable us to make anything like that this will be a really cool thing.

The rear touchpad on the Vita is pretty cool. Not every game uses it, but (like sixaxis) that's the point, it's there if the devs want to use it. LBP does a good job of using it.

I think the video capture idea sounds awesome, though. Especially if there's zero processing overhead like they said. There's definitely been some game moments I wish I could have captured and shared

Im all for innovation but the Vita isnt doing well, so modeling anything after it, seems strange to me. Im questioning the decision to be honest. I dont think developers like ND, R*, Gearbox, etc... care to make use of something like that in any of their games. It would need to be a game with that spec in mind. And the big games just dont need to utilize it.

As far as everything else, I really dont want a social gaming console. I have a phone and laptop for that stuff. I just wanna play games that look and perform great.

... but what if that rear touch pad somehow makes it more tempting, or maybe even easier, to also make a Vita version of your game? That Sony didn't add this rear pad so much with Orbis in mind as it is to create a synergy effect...

...and your probably right. Its most likely for that reason. But to change the Controller of a console for that reason still seems strange. Although I suppose we dont know how much it will actually change. I dont mind it, I just don't see the relevancy in changing something for either reason, in which it may not change at all cosmetically and in that case, fine! ;)

It doubt it's the *only* reason, but it might be part of Sonys plans. What do I know. :)

I would guess the controller will be slightly heavier and a bit larger because of this, but I would be very surprised if the general shape of it is radically different. Unless, of course, they have implemented the Move controls into it, like rumoured a while back. But if those rumours are true at all, I bet those are optional controllers.

Either way, I'm not worried about the controller at all. In fact, right now there's very few things that worries me. I am very excited about what we know so far. I believe in it!

Im not worried to much either. Sony knows what gamers want. They wont change that, and based purely on how thw wiiu is doing compared to the wii, sony knows its a stretch to try and duplicate Nintendos mind set.

i hope this video streaming feature is not costing too much time and money to develop, and hopefully wont come at any performance hit.
especially since 0.000000000001% of people who buy the system will use it!
im really starting to get worried that $ony wont have a sort of gamepad to use with the ps4, like what the wiiu has.
well i guess there goes the chances of zombiu sequel on the ps4!
gamepad adds so many new possibilities to gameplay, and even just on a OS level it just makes things so much easier and simpler!
M$ WILL be pushing this strongly with smartglass, so it would be suicide for $ony to leave this out.
and no the vita does not count, you dont have enough buttons to use it as a replacement controller.

Well for the extra controller part they usually map L2/R2/and Joystick clic L&R on the rear touchpad's four corners. So it DOES have enough buttons. Although I can give you the fact that it is kind of awkward to use at first.
