Driveclub Tried Using Sony's VR Tech, But Had To Ditch It

It's true that developer Evolution Studios toyed with Sony's new virtual reality tech when developing the PlayStation 4 exclusive title, Driveclub.

However, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida clarified to GameSpot that this was not the reason the game was delayed.

For the record, Driveclub won't be compatible with Sony's VR tech, just revealed as Project Morpheus. Yoshida said he tried it and while it worked well at low speeds, higher speeds brought on the difficulty...and the motion sickness. Therefore, Evolution "is not working on Morpheus at all" and they're putting "all their effort" into completing the game. It still doesn't have a solidified release date, but let's just say it's a ways off.

VR racing? That might be the only form of VR I'd try, but I doubt I'd last very long.

I'm not sure I believe him in regards to the game being delayed because of the VR headset. It may well be the reason. Then again, this isn't MS PR we're dealing with here, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

It makes sense. Why delay it for VR if the VR itself won't be released this year? They need this game released in 2014. Nowadays, everything can be patched up for support.

I don't think patching to fix some glitches or add remote play is the same as patching for something that seems to be a lot more complex, deep and time consuming.

It is actually. You must not know GT5 or GT6.

I'm betting that just like Agent & last guardian,Driveclub was still in pre production when announced during the ps4 reveal last february.
All they had was a vid of a cockpit which i'd say was a proof of concept for the bigwigs at SCE,they did the same thing at E3 2009.....announce it before its even in production to create buzz then apologise later when its obviously late!

I strongly disagree. Unlike the games you've listed Driveclub had an exact release date. It just needs more polish, just like Watch Dogs.

And the polishing is evident.

Just for the record, "right now."

At the conference, they specifically highlighted "driving games" as one of the best experience for the VR. When the time is right, they will start going back to experimenting with Morpheus.

I like this approach. Sony needs this game out asap. Just focus on the game itself. With the VR not releasing this year, there's just no need for it anyway.

im not so sure fast paced games like racing games are such a great fit for VR, in fact quite the oposite.
ive found the faster paced something is the quicker and more powerful the headaches, dizziness and puke feelings come.
playing a slower paced game like half life i can play for hours no problem, but playing a fast paced game like a racer and i cant even last minutes!
i really love playing far cry 3 with my rift dev kit but every time i do i have to avoid driving otherwise i feel really sick, and i also have to avoid the parasailing or even using the zip lines to get down from those towers.
mirrors edge is the worst though, stand right at the edge of a building and look to the streets below, instantly you feel your stomach drop like your on the tower of terror and before you know it your last meals redecorated your desk!
shame because its actually by far the funnest most immersive game to play with the rift its such a shame it makes you feel so sick.
