Project Morpheus Price And Date Not Set

Everyone wants to know more about Sony's new virtual reality initiative for the new generation of gaming.

Unsurprisingly, the two biggest questions involve the estimated date and price for the highly advanced unit. Although Sony can't reveal either at this point, they can give us a better idea of when to expect it, and how much we'll have to shell out.

In speaking to GameSpot, PlayStation president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said "Project Morpheus" will not launch this year, as they're "still making changes to the hardware." Remember, the current version of the VR headset is a "non-final prototype." For the record, the competition - namely Oculus Rift - doesn't have a release date for a consumer version, either.

As for price, Yoshida did say you wouldn't have to spend $1,000. You do have to fork over that much for Sony's HMZ head-mounted display line, but Yoshida reminded us that these units are priced for profit. Gaming hardware is typically sold at or below cost and eventually becomes profitable with the sale of games, accessories and services. So, like...$750? How much do you think it'll be?

We'll certainly hear more about Project Morpheus as 2014 marches on.

I have had an experience with the Oculus Rift at a convention and I have to say I was not keen on it. The persecution of depth just isn't accurate. There was a part where I was mean to walk on a narrow wooden plank over a a fire pit. Instead of the plank feeling at my foot level if felt more like it was level with my tummy.

Also, if you're long sighted apparently you eyes cannot focus on the lenses directly in front of your eyes... I don't know if they'll be changing that for this PS4 version but its something that needs to be addressed.

Yeah, I tried out a similar rig at Mall of America last summer. I'll agree the technology isn't perfect but it's come a long ways from the VR from the mid 90s.

Those issues were part of the six important aspects of VR they addressed at the conference.

Well Vertigo, we've come a long way since VR games that used vector graphics or wire-frames with no textures.

But the problem is that we still have to use a bulky thing on our heads/face to make it work.

Slim that thing down in a few years, and maybe it'll catch on.

It isn't bulky at all. I tried it out last summer and it wasn't a pain to have on my head.

The version of OR so far has just been an assembly for the developers to have a reference while working on their games. It's in no way representative for the final product. It's already a new dev version out with much higher quality screens and more precise movement tracking.

I'd be willing to be $500. I think that's a fair price given the cost of an HD TV.

My guess as well.

It shouldn't be near Oculus price. With the Rift, they have to have more advance hardware on it because the majority of the processing and workload will probably be calculated from the hardware itself. With the Morpheus, the ps camera and the PS4 itself will be sharing the workload.

I don't care about cost, I need a quality experience from the VR headset.

And I want a quality build to the headset as well, which really isn't much of a concern coming from Sony.

It could be a problem if they try too hard to make it super affordable to the masses by using cheap materials.

I hope it's between $250-$350. I cant see them selling a ton of these with the pricetag being higher than the system itself. Oculus' dev kit is going to be $350. I would not pay for it if it is $400 or more and I have the original HMZ headset. It is nice but not worth more than $400.

LMFAO at the HMZ series being priced for profit, i mean no sh*t sherlock!
no freaking way in hell are those things worth $1400+ bucks!
there not even worth HALF that!
VR though 350-400 rumors are saying.
its going to be a hard sell at that price with the current specs, i mean the screens not even full HD!
960x1080 is just far too low a resolution for VR.
i really wish oculus and $ony would use a 2560x1440 OLED display, afterall a chinese company just announced their phone which uses said panel, so its not like the techs not ready yet.
not to mention samsung and LG both say they will be releasing 2K screens for their phones this year too, so theres really no excuse not to offer them.
THE biggest problem with VR is the resolution, a low resolution display means you can see each and every individual pixel.
go up to your full HD TV and rest your head on it and see how long you can stay there till you get really bad eye strain and a headache.
and thats 1920x1080, not 960x1080!
you just cant cheap out on the display with VR, thats exactly what has been holding it back for so long, and its exactly what will continue to hold it back until someone decides to actually give us a half decent display!

correction, $250-300 is the rumored price.
anyone interested in the VR device really should read this though its quite interesting.
http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03/20/massive-information-leak-about-sonys-morpheus-talks-tech-price-games-2015-release-and-much-more/

that story more than anything perfectly exemplifies why i constantly give $ony such a hard time, well besides the fact that they treat EU like sh*t!
i miss the good old $ony who brought out technology to show what it could do, not to cash into a quick fad.
i miss the $ony that would of said eh f*ck it will go with the 2560x1440 90FPS display because that will produce a better experience.
i miss the good old $ony who always put specs, who always put what kaz spoke about tirelessly at CES, the WOW factor, before profitability.
$ony, please, if this story really is true, please go with the higher end display!
im sure most of your fans would much rather spend 1000 bucks on something and go OMFG this is 100 times better than even my wildest dreams!
than spend 300 dollars on something and go eh its ok, but could be SO much more!
