Future PS4 Update Will Let Us Dim The Controller's Light Bar

Looks like we'll be able to make the Dual Shock 4 last a little longer.

Back in January, a fan asked Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida if we'd eventually be able to turn off the light bar on the PS4 controller, thereby elongating the battery life. At the time, Yoshida simply replied, "No."

But he must've thought about it a bit more, because he confirmed to Geoff Keighley at the Game Developers Conference that in fact, a future firmware update will let you dim the light bar. Keighley first reported that you'd be able to turn it off entirely, but followed up with a correction on his Twitter page. For the record, PS4 firmware update 1.70, which features an HDCP Off option for gameplay capture and a new video editing tool, is coming out soon. But we don't know if that update will let us dim the light bar.

Either way, it's good news. That light bar must drain at least some battery power, and it's ridiculous to have it on all the time.

What's even more ridiculous is why it has to stay on during movies, I did a Band of Brothers marathon the other weekend and the controller died on me 3 times.

Although that really is my only complaint with the DS4, otherwise it's the best controller I've ever used.

Don't you have it auto shutoff after a set amount of time?

They need to have a dedicated remote like they did for the PS3.

godsman, or at least make the PS3 blu-ray remote. I"m still stumped why the PS4 wouldn't be able to detect a lot of PS3 blutooth devices.

That really is incredibly stupid and would annoy the hell out of me. When I watch movies, or play games for that matter I want no ambient lights, aka no frickin constant light coming out of the controller!!

I don't even understand what the point is with the light bar, and why you can't just have a simple controller option to turn it on/off. Sounds like the simplest thing in the world to implement...

It sounds like some good news for PS4 owners. Personally I think there should be the option for it to be off, if possible in current versions of the controller. If not, future manufactured versions. Just like we were able to to designate what controller was what number and turn off the tumbler on the PS3 controllers (not sure you can still do that on PS4), why not a light.

I might be the only one here, but with the way things have been going thus far with Sony... I am started to worry Sony may start faltering this year. Second Son maybe the breath of life for the PS4 until the summer.

I know its early days still, but I Sony seems to be losing a bit of momentum where MS seems to be picking up.

Here hoping for the best.

Keep playing!

Sony can't even meet consumer demand and is now expecting to catch up to the demand by hopefully summer. I know as of late with developers leaving and the boost Titanfall brought the X1 you may think things are changing but that just isn't so.

Why even have a light on the controller? I think it's a retarded (yes I think the word should still be used) feature.

The light is really to interact with the camera, I believe.

It's so the camera can pick it up and do special things I think.

So an optional device I don't ever intend on owning forces me to have a lit up controller? That's sooooo 2014 gay.

I agree with you. Probably wont get the camera and wish that the light could be turned off. OR they should put a software patch in that can detect when the camera is in, and THEN the light should turn on. Now that is come innovation right there. Take my idea sony! But i want 1% of what your making and we have a deal.

Right there with you. Stupid feature, and especially considering the camera doesn't even come standard with the PS4. So other than the camera, what's the light bar for??

So at the very least, unless you have the camera connected and used for the particular game you're playing, there's no reason for it to be on.

i'd rather have a light on my controller that i'll never use instead of a $100 kinect i'll never use! LOL. I definitely understand where you're coming from though lv...

Yay. While it can be kind of neat when it's flashing red and yellow because I'm carrying a torch, it can also be a very bright pain in my butt when I want the room as dark as possible.

I play games in the dark (nothing but TV), and it really never gets bright enough to bother me. To each their own I guess.

Really? The light is bouncing off the walls around me, it's quite noticeable.

Sooooo, I might be in the minority here, but battery life impact aside, I really don't have a problem with the light and don't quite understand how the light could be bothersome to people even when playing in the dark.

The light is usually shining into my lap right in front of my nutsack. I mean seriously, what are people doing with their controller while they are playing so that the light is shining all over the place to be bothered by it?

In my case, I don't see any reflections on my TV with it (and when I do, I have to really be looking for it AND the image on screen has to be completely static). And even when I have the lights in the room completely off, whether I'm sitting down so the light is shining into my lap or if I'm laying down, I never notice it - let alone allow it to be a nuisance.

I would love to hear what others are doing that the light becomes noticeable - and then bothersome at that.

I like to play on floor, on my back...and the light always reflects off my boner. It's annoying!

Less lube should equal less reflection, I would think.

dam, should of known its too good to be true!
seriously, why cant we turn the dam thing off?
especially when they give developers the option!
oh well i guess dimming is better than nothing, hopefully they let us dim it enough.
im more concerned about when the blazes that pause and resume standby feature is finally going to be added!
one thing im hating about the ps4, they release with useless streaming and social features, and use the time post release to enhance those, but still no mention of a gaming essential feature, which should of been included, and was included in that other system, on day one!
for the gamers my a$$!
if its for the gamers, than why is a quintessential gaming feature missing, and zero social features missing?
and why is it the social features which constantly keep getting updates each FW update?

So, when are the mp3 playback and DLNA features going to make their way back onto the PS brand console? Truly my only gripe, but a fairly large one.
