Redbox Will Offer Next-Gen Game Rentals

There might be soon be another way to rent your next-gen video games.

According to a NeoGAF forumite, the rental service Redbox will soon begin offering games for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U. In addition to the Wii U titles you see through that link, another informative thread shows some upcoming PS4 and Xbox One games, and they'll be available as of April 1.

Yep, next month, use Redbox to sample such great games as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Killzone: Shadow Fall and NBA 2K14. They're all in the "Coming Soon" tab at Redbox's website so it does seem inevitable. In fact, some subscribers say that some Redbox locations already offer next-gen titles; currently, the service officially offers PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii games for rental.

With over 39,000 locations across the country, Redbox is an increasingly popular method of renting entertainment. Are you a subscriber?

I'm all for this. Especially if a game doesn't have a demo.

Stay Classy PSX...

Great logic. I'm guessing if you hadn't had a piece of gum since 1996 you'd just assume no one chews gum anymore.

They've been renting them here in Oregon probably since THIEF released. Maybe a little earlier. Personally it's a rip off. I rented Borderlands 2, to only simply get a character started for when I bought. I paid like $1.50 and had it for 24 hours. Just wasn't enough time especially for a game like Borderlands. I mean I suppose if you have no priorities you could make it worth it.

It will be good for those games that you don't know if you want to buy or not. I would rather pay $1.50 to find out if a game sucks or not, then shell out $60 bucks and be ticked off that it does suck.

Or for games that have short campaigns. Buy it, beat the 4-6 hour campaign in 1 day, try a little MP, if it's any good go buy it, if it's no good, take it back, and you don't lose out.

I really hope that we see this in Canada as I can see me using this, and saving money on games that I will probably never finish.

I guess the only thing about this though, will be the games where you still have to shell out for the online pass, but if you only want to play the campaign modes, I'm all for this.

I hope they have more PS4 games than the average amount of PS3 games they've had.

Still couldn't get me to visit red box. Going to a physical location to get it? Then AGAIN to drop it off? All while paying over a dollar each day?

No thanks. Wasn't that Blockbuster's business model?

Blockbuster was $5 and not nearly as convenient as Redbox. I'm going off of the figures for 2002 since that's the last time I rented a game at Blockbuster.

Yes, leaving the house is a such a bother these days....

I actually like the whole red box idea, It's filling a small market that has been missing since rental places have died. Most of the ones here are set up beside a grocery store, so you just grab a movie, while you're thinking what you are going to make for dinner.

If you aren't in town every day or near your favorite red box, I can see how this can be an issue, but it's no different then the old days when you had to return it the next day or 2, but hopefully with games, they will allow for a week long rental or something along those lines.

i think this is awesome! Since i have a family i can't afford to pay $60+ on a game i might not like. paying $1.50 or $2 to see if i'd like to buy the game isn't bad at all. Or if its a single player game that really has no replay value then yes i'd rather pay $10 for 5 days to play it than $60 for the same amount of play time. Lol. Seems pretty logical to me.

surprised these things are still in business!
i use to rent allot of games but it just stopped being worth it, i mean you end up getting charged 25+ bucks for 2 games, and only have 3 days to finish them.
so thats 1.5 days per game.
hell i struggled to even finish COD in 1.5 days!
so many times i ended up taking the game back only like 15% finished kinda a waste.
not to mention 95% of the games you would rent were scratched to kingdom come and would refuse to play in the first place!
always puzzled me why game discs always end up more scratched than movies for some reason.

i remember when i use to work at the kiosk tech support for video ezy the amount of people we had ringing us up complaining that their games were not working was unbelieveable!
actually exactly why they stopped stocking games as they found for some reason people who rented games were not as gentle and respectful with the disks than their movie renting counterparts.
funny every week or so you would always get some smart a$$ who would keep the disc, put the barcode on the case so the camera can read it and accept the return, but what the morons didnt expect was every time a disks returned it gets marked for removal for a franchisee to check it make sure its in the same condition it came out, so when they would come to take the case out and not find the disk whoever rented it last got a nice hefty fine.
