Insider: PS1/PS2 Games In 1080p On PS4, Morpheus Info

What can we expect to see at E3 this year?

Well, if industry insider Ahsan Rasheed aka "thuway" is right, we'll get several big announcements from Sony during the event. As usual, Rasheed has been chatting up a storm on Twitter.

Firstly, he says Sony will reveal "local PS2/PS1 support on PS4 w/native 1080p rendering for select titles." That would be freakin' awesome, especially for those of us who are already picturing Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII in native 1080p on our PS4s. ...not sure exactly how that would look, though. And Rasheed adds that the software is "still buggy" and not every game currently works.

Moving on, Rasheed also said we can expect more "PS4 exclusive game stuff" (no surprise there), the launch of PlayStation Now (sounds about right), and several virtual reality demos courtesy of Sony's new VR tech, "Project Morpheus." Here are some of the Tweets pertaining to VR:

"Devs I’m talking to really want to try Morpheus. Community feels like it is the best way to introduce VR to mainstream consumers."

"Oh and Sony has opened the floodgates asking for open criticism from third parties on Morpheus and what they want to see in a final product."

I just hope their E3 presentation is still game-oriented. Remember that E3 where Sony spent way too much time on PlayStation Move? Please don't go overboard on the tech and gadgets; just show us those games.

Please give us PS1 & PS2 games in 1080p... I am still traumatized from the death of my Fat PS3 and no way to play my PS2 games :( I really have not forgiving Sony for removing the backwards compatibility of PS2 games, as I have no way to play them now.

You could always buy a PS2 cheaper than a new game... I don't know.

Or if the local PS1/PS2 in 1080p is achieved then you just wait for that to happen on PS4.

Oh I have a PS2 Slim, but here in the UK you cannot place the output to 480p, so even with a component cable it still looks awful. I have tried cheat discs to upscale to hacking my memory card for homebrew apps... nothing seems to work.

You could always just play them through your PC onto your HDTV. Or enjoy them on your PS2 with a CRT television.

Eh, If I am to use an emulator on PC there is not point in owning the 70+ PS2 games on discs. It is so un-authentic I might as well just pirate the lot. As for an SD TV... Nope... I don't like clutter and I want all my consoles on 1 TV.

@ Godsman - Yes, but the only reason I mod'ed my Memory Card in the first place was to change the output of my PS2 games so they don't look awful on my HDTV. Had Sony not removed the backwards compatibility in the first place I wouldn't have have to resort to that - So you can fall of the high horse.

@ LV - True, it is an option but it feels so unauthentic to the point where it isn't worth it. I value my PS2 collection and wish to use them.

Fair enough, I value mine too which is why I backed them all up on my PC to begin with. It's nice to play FFXII in true HD. All it takes is a long HDMI cable and dualshock controller to feel like you're using a PS2 on an HDTV.

The ps1 and ps2 games are going to fail for the ps4. Everyone spent TONS of money putting all these games on their ps3. Why in the HELL would anyone pay to play these games again on the ps4 and ONLY be able to play them while they are online?

Holy crap 1080p PS1 and 2 games??? Huge potential there. The original standard def versions are hard to look at on modern HD displays, so a huge need exists for more modern versions. I hope they don't nickel and dime us too much on the pricing, though. Maybe they'll pull a Nintendo and only charge a dollar or two to upgrade PSN Classics you already own to the higher-def version?

Not sure 100 percent sure how the tech would work but I'm holding out hope PS4 really does implement a great "legacy" option that allows us to preserve and enjoy classic games.

For those of you wondering, FFVII (andany PS1 game) looks absolutely terrible in 1080p. You're going to see the same issue that plagued the Silent Hill 2 HD port. You now will notice all the imperfections! Enjoy!

Actually the problem with the Silent Hill HD Collection on PS3 is that they didn't even convert a completed version of the game... It was an utter embarrassment of a production and deserves the flack it gets. I played through Silent Hill 3, but Silent Hill 2 is so dear to me I just couldn't do it, so I sold it.

I simply used Silent Hill 2 HD as an example of what to expect from these old games in 1080p. The use of unfinished code to port Silent Hill 2/3 resulted in a number of issues, the least of which is the visuals. PS1 games will look even worse.

Ugh, Final Fantasy VII is not overrated. If it didn't appeal to you fine but do not slap overrated onto it. The game was so important in Europe, mostly because we didn't get many JRPGs at the time and to have a game as grande as Final Fantasy VII was just such a joy.

That just tends to happen with the first game. MGS, FF7, Ocarina of time, etc.

Granted -- they're great games but there is better.

My favorite franchise is MGS yet I thought MGS4 and MGS3 were much better (story wise, gameplay, atmostphere). A little unfair to compare MGS games because PS1 didn't have the capacity as PS2 or PS3.

As far as FF goes -- I enjoyed FF8 and FF9 so much more than FF7 both in story, setting, characters, fighting, - EVERYTHING but it just so happens FF7 opened the world for everything else and that's the main reason it's praised over the others.

I'm sure if we would have had Chrono Chross 2 & 3, it would have been the same case. I thought Chrono Chross was mediocre at best.

Did I open a can of worms here, World? LOL

MRSUCCESS,

Are you new to gaming? FF7 is praised for all the reasons you evidently don't like it. It doesn't get a free pass simply for upgrading the series to polygons. Also I'm not sure what point you're making about Chrono Cross since it's a sequel to the exceptional Chrono Trigger.

It's hard to take anything you say as valid when you show such extreme bias. And a rather odd bias I might add. I've never heard of someone discrediting a game just because it comes before another entry in a series. Oh and FFVI is regarded with nearly as much praise as VII. Have you played it?

Best selling FF of all time... broke boundaries in gaming... did a number of things never seen before in games... an incredible number of different things to do and accomplish in one title... critical acclaim... still highly sought after by gamers... a strategy guide that sold over a million copies on it's own... PSN top selling title for weeks 15 years after original release...

I don't see how it could possibly be -overrated- for all it accomplished... especially if the only thing against it is you didn't like it as much as others.

I suppose titles like Halo, Gears of War, God of War, Grand Theft Auto are all extremely overrated just because I don't like them, too... ;)

FF6 I did not play it but it's not nearly as mentioned as FF7. What's the last article you read where FF6 was mentioned? FF7 is the praise around here.

I'm not taking away from what FF7 accomplished. It opened the eyes for many gamers in general. Best selling FF of all time? Doesn't mean anything to me. Sales does not equal Quality otherwise we would be talking about GTA, COD or another franchise, right?

As far as Halo, Gears & God of War and GTA goes... I agree they're overrated.

MRSUCCESS,

Having played those games doesn't make you a seasoned gamer. I'm starting to believe your gaming began with the PS1? FFVI is regarded just as highly as VII within the FF community and RPG lovers in general and even on here. I've met plenty of people around here that prefer VI to VII. I'm rather shocked you haven't played VI but then again maybe you're not a big RPG fan or new to gaming...

Final Fantasy is regarded as the greatest if not one of the greatest gaming series of all time. Underdog mentioned VII being the best selling to put into context how ridiculous your belief that it's overrated is. Sales alone don't equal quality but they surely do within the context of this argument. I'd say the best selling game in a highly regarded series has to say something about the quality of the product.

When did you first play VII?

Agree with this comment 0 up, 1 down Disagree with this comment

Underdog15
Tuesday, March 25, 2014 @ 5:40:00 PM

Sales alone, no. Critical acclaim... the fact that fans are still clamoring for more FFVII... the fact that 15 years later it ends up being a top selling title on PSN... the fact that there is an enormous modding community devoted solely to the PC version of FFVII... One of the greatest PSP games was Crisis Core... they made a movie that did surprisingly well... Nobuo Uematsu made hundreds of thousands of dollars doing FFVII concerts...

Heck... google just "Final Fantasy" and click "images"... it's all the newest releases (FFX HD and FFXIII) and then it's all outdone by FFVII stuff. When they announced FFX HD on twitter, it generated good buzz. But when they jokingly asked about FFVII remake? Their twitter page exploded. Literally. It crashed.

All of it, collectively, says a lot. It doesn't say, "You need to accept VII as the greatest" or anything, but it sure as heck makes an "overrated" argument seem under supported.

More assumptions, huh?

Define seasoned gamer for me.

To answer your questions I started gaming with SNES. I was young enough to understand and enjoy games. I'm a busy adult and don't have the time to play FF1 - FF6.I barely have the time to play the new games. I have MGS5 still in plastic, Dark Souls still unfinished and Tomb Raider half way done. I don't have the time to go back so that's why I kept the initial comment from FF7 and on. I appreciate that you're trying to figure me out but you keep making assumptions. I have more RPGs than anything else in my collection. I read more than I post so I am up to date with the industry.

Again, FF7 is good but I have gone back to try and see what others still see in it and frankly I don't feel the same. Heck, give me FF9 and I'll enjoy that even more.

MRSUCCESS,

Of course I'm making assumptions. Your lack of a detailed explanation forces me to. I'd like to think a seasoned gamer wouldn't suggest that FFVII is overrated. That's a start. I'm surprised to hear you started gaming with the SNES and own more RPGs than any other genre yet never played any of the FF games before VII. Again when did you initially play VII? I find it hard to believe someone that loves RPGs could possibly view VII as overrated even now and especially way back in the late 90s.

I totally understand preferring another RPG to VII but I don't get the "overrated" statement. Also I don't mean to come across like a jerk. I know it's an issue with me around these parts.

I first played FF7 late 1997. As far as owning more RPGs than any other genre shouldn't be hard to believe. There are countless of RPGs for PS1 and PS2. I didn't start liking RPGs until later. I was playing a lot of platform and fighting games (Street Fighter mostly) games which a lot gamers enjoyed.

Most arguments I see in favor of labeling FFVII as 'overrated' points to the amount spin-offs and sequels that had generated from the game. Then there's questions on why FFIV, FFVII and FFX had been granted sequels but not the other titles when they're just as great. I'm saving the mentioning of XIII since around here it's been quite vocally established on how 'great' the trilogy is. *ahem*

While I think MRSUCCESS is explaining himself just fine, there's also the age and timing to factor with him not being able to play the earlier FF titles. For example I had started gaming with the NES and enjoy RPGs like him, but hadn't played FFVII until after XII.. because I had never been able to come across the game (always sold out I'm guessing). The ones before FFVII I didn't play until the PS1 ports came out for it. I played them in this order; VIII, IX, IV, X, V, VI, XII, VII, XIII, and XIV. Because of that, while I love VII, I don't have the nostalgia feeling with it that VIII, IX, and IV give me.

I think it's at least worthy that he actually likes the game and isn't putting its lego-figured graphics into putting the game down. :p

Vamp, why is it so hard to believe those other titles didn't get all the spin offs? It sold 10 million originally and is the current reigning "fastest selling game" on the PSN.

The other titles did well, but like.... half as well.

And lastly Vamp, -NO ONE- is putting down the fact that he doesn't like FFVII as much or has the nostalgia. It's a criticism of the fact that he calls it "overrated" and cannot support that part. It's very easy to understand his explanation of why HE doesn't like it as much. But the "overrated" piece is just absurd.

It's too bad he feels he can't post just because someone challenged him on something.

I don't know enough about the tech, but this time it's closer to what an emulator on a PC does. I've played games on an emulator as well as on PS3, and that's really all I can say to make the comparison... I know the difference because I've seen it, but I can't explain it.

:p

I guess my advice would be to just check out an emulator. You don't need to pirate. There is stuff out there that lets you copy your games you own onto your PC to play it on that.

chilker,

The PS3 just made it possible to run the games on the PS3 system with the most basic emulation possible. A true emulator (like world pointed out) will enhance the visuals/sound/gameplay in various ways. The problem with older games though is you get to a point where you're negatively effecting the end product by trying to increase the resolution. There's a reason older games look better on CRT TVs than HDTVs.

PS1 games will look terrible in 1080p but there is hope for PS2 games. FFXII is a great example of a game benefiting from increased resolution. The game is gorgeous on PC. When it was originally released its textures were hampered by the PS2 and TVs at the time.

Wow, thanks everyone for all the replies. That helps. I didn't realize that the new program running on the the PS4 will be emulating it and allow it to actually be re-rendering the images at a higher resolution instead of simply smoothing over and stretching the pictures like the PS3 does. I guess Sony is porting the PC emulator to the PS4. The Digital Foundry Blog published an article about how the PS2 games could look on a HDTV up scaled using the PC emulator. The results were pretty good.

GT4 looked so nice I was tempted to set it up. I'm looking forward to how this will play out. I hope I can just pop in the PS2 disc into the PS4 and enjoy. I know. Wishful thinking. I hope it is no too $$$

Metal Gear Solid looks fantastic emulated on Dreamcast, except you can tell nobody has any eyes.

I feel I am in the minority here, but I'd rather get brand new games that utilize the new hardware I paid good money for than the ability to replay old classics. I don't mind the odd remake, but I hope they don't focus too much on stuff we can already play anytime we want anyways.

I get the feeling they're using the least amount of resources possible to make this work. There is far more money in new titles than these older games. I trust Sony to give us the right balance in terms of offering features like this and continued support of AAA exclusives.

id love to see full HD compatibility for ps1 and ps2 games, but that select titles thing worries me.
exactly why im a bit worried with playstation now too, it would be a fantastic service, but if you cant find your favorite games, than whats the point?
especially back from the ps1 days theres so many games out there where the publishers have gone bankrupt, or the licensing rights have shifted, so how would you license them now?
i can see allot of games being left out not because they dont work, but because of legal IP issues which will be such a shame.

i feel sorry for whoevers going to host the show though, i mean hes going to have one hell of a pair of shoes to fill!
E3s not going to be the same without jack, hell no PR events going to be the same without him!
he was MR community, he was the only guy in playstations history who at least acted to give a royal $#%^ about the fans, and its such a shame to see him gone!
