The New Order Special Edition Doesn't Come With The Game?

Ever heard of a special edition that didn't come with the game?

Well, now you have. Today, Bethesda has announced the Panzerhund Edition for the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order. There will only be 5,000 units (a true "limited" edition if there ever was one), and it'll feature a bunch of goodies, all packaged within a special footlocker-type box measuring 20" x 10.5" x 8.5."

Included in that nifty box is an 8-inch hand-painted Panzerhund statue and base, a Classified Folder containing war documents like maps, case files, letters, and even an X-ray for hero B.J. Blazkowicz. But that's not all: There's an exclusive steelbook for the game, three embroidered patches, a replica dog tag, and 14 full-color vintage postcards from the adventure's alternate reality setting (in the 1960s).

The price is set at $99.99 but as I said above, this does not include the game. So basically, it's more like $160 for everything, unless for some bizarre reason you want the Panzerhund Edition and no game. By the way, pre-ordering Wolfenstein: The New Order will net you access to the DOOM beta, if you're interested.

The new Wolfenstein effort is set to drop on May 20 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Which I do. That's why I've already preordered this pack. The game itself will be a digital copy for me, as I haven't bought a physical copy of a game in almost two years now.

For the Collector's view point I get the concept. If you buy a very limited edition collectable with the game, you have to open the box to play the game, which annoys the hard core collector, but if the game was never in the box, you never have to open it.

Bethesda makes more money because you still go out and buy the game. And the collector gets to keep their prize in pristine condition to hopefully increase it's value.

But it's still sucks, I would think that what would make this more of a collector's item in the future would be to put a sealed game in there. That way, if you find one of these boxes further down the road still sealed up it would be a greater value, because whoever owned it resisted the urge to crack open the game.

Or what they could do is have the game come with the package, just literally outside of it.

It would be like buying it separately only not having to pay extra for it.

This is the future of collectors editions due to the digital shift.

There is that too, it's going to be weird to someday walk into a game store and instead of shelves of games, you'll see collector's editions sitting on the shelf that you can buy while your game is downloading at home.

Kind of sad really. Here is a physical memento for the non-physical game that you may have owned once.

I really hope you're wrong. To me this really devalues the point of special editions. It's meant to be additional content and merchandise to help celebrate the game. Buying all this stuff without the game just makes the package seem redundant, yes you can bu yet game separately but then if I wanted the extra goodies why not sell them on their own.

Regardless of game or not, this set looks cheap. Some collectors editions are nice with some quality stuff and others are made with very cheap, low quality stuff and sadly this looks to be the case here.

looks like for 100 bucks you get a cardboard box, a large d&d mini, some quarter sized patches, and a few pieces of paper.

Who wouldn't spend $100 on that?

I think it's hilarious that none of this stuff has a schwastika on it. Makes perfect sence though, wouldn't want to have a toy nazi machine on your desk. Might get you fired at work or make you lose some friends at home
