BioWare Drops A Few More Dragon Age: Inquisition Tidbits

Dragon Age: Inquisition is shaping up nicely, wouldn't you say?

Speaking on Twitter, BioWare creative director Mike Laidlaw has addressed plenty of pressing fan questions.

As you can see, one of the first involves the question of the storyline in the upcoming sequel: Do you have to have played the first two games in the series? Laidlaw's answer is simple: Nope. It couldn't hurt to have some Dragon Age experience, but it's not necessary for enjoying Inquisition. He tossed out a few gameplay-related tidbits as well, as summarized at Gameranx.

For instance, class-restricted abilities will come back, ideally to promote party-based gameplay. He also elaborated on the roll-dodge we've seen in the game; interestingly, Mages won't "roll;" they'll "blink." It's not a teleport, though; it's a...well, it's a "blink." Laidlaw did say that such skills are purchased in the same way, and they're not acquired via talent points. Me, I don't think rolling or "blinking" should be part of it, but whatever.

It is amusing how many games allow you to dodge the most fearsome of enemies by employing the typical "roll" mechanic. We've been doing this skill at least since the N64/PS1 days, if not earlier.

Isn't it time to find more variety in our defensive tactics than the same ol' animations?

I don't mind if the fighting becomes a balance of skills and dice rolls, instead of mainly just a battle of stats.

I found the fighting in Dragon Age 2 to be great fun, and it was the battle system that in my opinion were the main attraction in Kingdoms Of Amalur. So the info about dodging don't worry me one bit.

Seems like another step away from the CRPG gameplay of the original and a step towards an action game with RPG elements.

Which may not be such a bad thing. But I really wish they would have the guts to have made another game with the gameplay of DA:Origins.

I'm hoping they've combined the best of the two cause I really liked both, for different reasons. A middle ground could be excellent, imo.

There were some skills in the previous Dragon Ages that allowed to dodge attacks. Kind of interesting that they would make it a default character movement instead.

Very excited for this game.

Don't touch it EA, keep your dirty filthy hands off of it.

This game should be awesome.

Another game developer saying we need not play previous titles to "enjoy" the game. What does Bioware mean by this? because 9 out of every 10 developers that say this about a sequel mean its not necessary to have played previous titles to their series to understand and get the story. Which 90% of the time is flat out wrong!
To everyone, When they say things like that it means to go play from the beginning. Then play the newest entry. That has been my experience time and time again. The only exception is games like FF for the most part. Because of obvious reasons most everyone here knows why. Separate worlds, separate stories. This is a trilogy for pete sakes!
You wouldn't do it with Mass Effect. Same exact reasons. I will play DA1 and 2 before I ever touch 3.

While you're correct that the ME trilogy is one large tale DA 2 pretty much stands on its own only making reference to some of the lore established in Origins. (At least from what I recall)

That being said if you haven't played either you still should since they're great games.

Am I the only one who just isn't excited about BioWare anymore? IMO Mass Effect 2 was the last great game they released. They used to be THE go-to team for WRPGs but I just don't feel that way anymore, and with the doctors gone, and likely a large portion of the people under them, I don't have a lot of hope for EA driven BioWare titles.

ME2 was the last truly epic game they released, that is true. But that's not *that* long ago. I don't think we should give up just yet.
