The Evil Within Gameplay Trailer: Am I Going Crazy?

That's what the protagonist asks towards the end of this new gameplay video for The Evil Within, and it's a perfectly legitimate question.

After all, given the circumstances, any normal person would think they're cracking up. Or rather, they've already cracked up big time and now they're in some bizarre, twisted, personal hell that only they can see.

Shinji Mikami, Resident Evil creator and horror guru, has the requisite darkness in his brain to pull this one off. Tango Gameworks might just deliver one of the freakiest video games to ever exist come the end of August, and if you have your doubts, just watch this new gameplay trailer. It features some gameplay, disturbing storyline segments, and unsurprisingly horrific imagery.

So, think you can handle it?

As much as I hope this is good, the trailer looks like it's going to be about the jump scares and the in-your-face grotesque. Can't we get back to visceral psychological horror that doesn't show you the faces wrapped in barbed wire, but makes you only think they're there?

Yeah I'm more interested in Frictional's Soma.

Totally agree. The game looks quality (from what I can tell), which is obviously important above all else. But I definitely prefer horror that infects the mind rather than the "jump scares and () in-your-face grotesque" that this trailer promotes. Hopefully, more of the former is what it'll turn out to be.

I'm not giving up on it, watching a video is very different from actually playing the game. Watch a video of Heavy Rain and you'll never feel the tensions of decision and reaction perched on your outcome. It could be the same with horror, you can't just catch a snippet or it looks like a hollywood deal which is only about the visuals.

This game looks pretty sweet. Seems like a return to form for Shinji :)

really looking forward to this, its nice to finally see someone who actually understands how horror works!
well of course they do, it is headed up by the creator of RE.
one thing im so sick about horror games everythings just hide and seek, a seriously f*cking boring and repetitive, and 2 if you cant fight back you loose that tension, and you also lose the fear of the enemy.
outlast a perfect example i shat myself the first time i played the typical flick x switches to restart the generator in the basement level when i saw the guy bust the door down, but after that i just did not care anymore and got really bored really quickly.
goes from fear and panic, to oh great hes back would you just f*ck off and let me do this!
goes from fear and panic to sheer frustration.
NOT how you make a horror game!
