What Will Keep PS4 Sales Steady In The Coming Months?

The holiday season is a ways off, the warmer days are coming fast, and the potential blockbuster on the immediate horizon is Watch Dogs.

Video game hardware doesn't do well during a software drought. It's especially difficult for brand new systems, especially when most gamers have gigantic backlogs and far more reason to keep playing the "old" consoles. Therefore, what will stabilize PS4 sales over the coming spring and summer months?

I don't mean to single out the PS4, by the way; I imagine the Xbox One faces the same exact problems. We don't see any huge exclusive software until later this year and in fact, outside of the aforementioned Watch Dogs, we really don't see any AAA third-party games until September's Destiny. I suppose a few are late to the party and just can't wait to play inFamous: Second Son and Titanfall (on Xbox One rather than the Xbox 360), so that might spur sales in April and May. But beyond that...we could be looking at several consecutive down months.

It's always difficult to sell gaming stuff when the weather is nice; that's a historically accurate statement. Toss in a software drought and chances are, we could be looking at a serious hardware downturn. Maybe The Last Of Us: Remastered can entice new consumers, I don't know...

Bring back DLNA. My PS3 shouldn't have more functionality than a PS4.

It's the technology that allows devices to stream content (video/audio/pictures) with other devices. There is no reason the PS4 shouldn't have it. I'm absolutely shocked that it doesn't have the most basic media streaming capabilities.

Totally agree. One of the main reasons I did not jump in yet.
I don't care what people will say about it being a game console blah, blah, blah, My PS3 is a great gaming console and a great media device.
On another note, I can't wait to see how TLoU looks on the PS4 :)

Indeed, the PS3 is a real power house and is just so compatible with everything (other than PS2 games...) I;m really impressed at the range of video files it plays and ripping music through it is really efficient.

DLNA won't be happening while PS3 are still being produced.
You'll have to use their vid & music streaming services.
PS4 is a games machine yo!

Tired of converting MKV files.

Lord carlos,

I really don't see how the existence of the PS3 would result in Sony purposely making the PS4 inferior. How exactly does limiting the capabilities of the PS4 in any way help sales?

World,

Have you tried PS3 media server? It's what I use and it's rather simple. Also for MKV I use software called Aimersoft. It can convert a 4gig, 2hour long, HD-MKV to AVI/MP4 in about 10 minutes.

I was just gonna suggest PS3 Media Server, LV!

That's what I use. It automatically streams your MKV files directly into something watchable on PS3. Seamlessly. It was awesome.

Yoshida says their priority for the first few months is gaming functions since they emphasized that it's foremost a game console first. All those media stuff will eventually come guys. Remember how the PS3 has grown in function over the years? I'd like to think the PS4 will undergo such changes as well.

daus26,

That's a BS reason. It isn't a feature they've yet to get to. It's a feature that they're purposely restricting.

Limited
purposely restricted is 100% correct
Simply put sony doesn't have to offer it anymore because demand for ps4 outstrips supply, that never happened to ps3.
Ps3's muti media features were an incentive for buyers,a very expensive piece of tech in 2006-2008
The PS4 is a beautiful machine built for Games and at LESS than 400 bucks(my ps3 cost 600 euro in march 2007)it a bargain.
If you want to stream vids N music you'll need a credit card same goes for playstation now,blu ray is free though!
Thats how i see untill the PS3 joins its siblings in the electronic afterlife, then again with all this anti piracy stuff going on these days dnla may never appear on PS4.
I'm getting one cira uncharted 4 so i hope i'm wrong.

Stepping into a PS4 right now wasn't all that bad timing for me. I get to play the lineup of existing PS4 titles while it gets dry.
Maybe there's a similar incentive for people to buy the PS4 during the slower months.

Infamous: SS (in progress)
KZ: SF
MGS: GZ
AC4
Watch Dogs (maybe)

Those should be plenty to hold me over until TLoU Remaster. After which it'll be all about Batman!

yah, it's just my character model, from scratch, that I've been slowly working on for the last ...forever. That small thumbnail doesn't at all show the eyelashes, spherical reflection mapping on the eyes, or any of the skin pores. never mind the crap hair texturing and skin specularity at this point though. The blank facial expression is made that way for when it's "skinned" and "rigged." Which are animation preparation processes.

#Driveclub and Uncharted 4. Then hopefully e3 will reveal something good coming for early next year from one of its many silent studios, and hopefully something huge for the fall gets teased, maybe Santa Monica's or Quantic Dreams, Guerilla, etc.

Heh I guess I'm optimistic.

It's a little quiet between now and October (Watch Dogs and maybe Driveclub, possibly Planetside 2), but once we hit October we get Batman, Shadow of Mordor and a few others, and there'll be a tonne in Nov as usual.

Don't ignore the indie/smaller budget stuff though. Strike Suit Zero came out this week, and looks the goods :).

For one many people have been waiting for just the right opportunity, Watch_Dogs should convince a lot of the people that were gonna get a PS4 soon anyway and just says why not. Another big thing is, existing owners haven't played many of the games already out, be it indies, or the excellent launch titles.

Right now in addition to WD, and TLoU, I'm looking forward to Guacamelee, Galak-Z, The Witness, and Transistor. Then there's plenty of big games in the fall, Dragon Age: Inquisition being the big one for me now that The Witcher 3s out, and of course, Uncharted if it makes fall, Batman, AC23, etc. I'm not worried about ever running out of things to play!

nothing.
exactly why $ony was so f*cking stupid to wait till march to bring in the first large batch of ps4s here for the new year.
luckily second son released, but besides that, allot of the other games had come and gone.
so when the units finally did come people were meh ill wait till the next big games are out, meaning wait till holidays rush now!
well that is unless GTAV does end up releasing in june for next gen systems and PC.
watch dogs im a bit skeptical of, it SOUNDS great, but gameplay videos, the delay, ubisofts worrying constant restraints i mean the games out in 1.5 months time, and its still turning up to events as a strictly hands off affair!
bit worrying..........

This will give Sony time to properly replenish PS4 stock and work on much needed and requested updates. We'll probably see some new apps and features during these next few months. They also need to set up their second wind. They came in hot but need to stay on it. MS is gathering mindshare solely on updates and catch-up features. IE: YouTube direct uploads. Meanwhile PS4 doesn't even have the YouTube App. People expect these things now. Feed the casuals Sony which will widen the market share, increase revenue and allow more content for us Veteran gamers.

It would have been a slick move to break the drought with at least one surprise AAA release. Can't remember that ever happening during the warm weather months. I hope they drop some nukes at E3! Games MUST be what it's all about this coming Holiday.

It would seem their answer is indie games... which quite frankly is not enough. Or the re-release of The Last of Us... which I only intend to get when it is cheap late 2015. The Playstation 4 in 2014 is simply not an appealing option. I'm still sticking with Final Fantasy X on my PS3, which will keep my busy for most of it before I go back to more PS2 games I have yet to play.

No idea. I just know I'll be rolling around in different games till Mikami's "The Evil Within" comes out.

Seriously, the hype is beating Deep Down for me, and I seriously want that game too. My hype meter has completely, spontaneously exploded due to the new trailer for The Evil Within.

Than there's E3 to look forward too. Will we get a ffxv release date? The release date I've been waiting for since I was just a little pre teen? Cm'on square, don't let me down.

PS Now is supposed to hit this summer, could be a selling point and MLB 14 is coming out.

then there's the fact that the PS4 is still relatively scarce and a strong showing at e3 and you may not see too much of a downturn.

how the poop does Fez, TowerFall Ascension, and SteamWorld Dig have higher critical acclaim on PS4 than Infamous SS, MGS GZ, and KZ SF?

there's just something really backwards about that. I sometimes wonder if indie games get preferential treatment for not being popular.

Don't sleep on Indies. Just because they don't have the budget of those Triple A blockbusters they certainly can be the better experience. Sure they may not look as pretty though.
