PlayStation 4 Tops 7 Million, Software Exceeds 20.5 Million

It's another sales milestone for the PlayStation 4.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has announced that their new next-gen console has officially sold over 7 million units globally. The number is accurate as of April 6, 2014. Obviously, this is a fantastic start to a new era. Said SCE President and Group CEO Andrew House:

"The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice. The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months."

PS4 software sales have remained strong, selling over 20.5 million copies at retail and via the PlayStation Store. Furthermore, more than 135 million shares have been captured with the innovative new Share button on the Dual Shock 4, and we've seen nearly 5 million gameplay broadcasts on Twitch and Ustream. There have been over 90 million spectate sessions all told, and that's an impressive number. Of course, as more games continue to arrive, all these stats will rise.

The PlayStation 4 is now available in 72 countries and territories worldwide.

What a difference a generation makes. MS sure has been silent about the Xbox sales figures since January.

I'm pretty sure the NPD reported in March for Feb's numbers. And MS followed up with what they stated.

I feel like Sony is sounding their trump today to pre-empt the NPD's report tomorrow. The NPD usually reports on the third Thursday of each month right?
I think because Sony knows very well MS will likely have taken the month of March due to Titanfall and discounted bundles they went ahead and tried to steal some attention for themselves before MS takes it.

I haven't been aware of any Xbox figures since the month of January. I could be mistaken though. I don't know when figures are released. It will be interesting to see how well Titanfall moved consoles. And I'm sure there's some truth to your statement about Sony's reasoning for releasing the figures early.

I read an article from Yahoo that said PS4 was ahead of One for the month of March. Of course, it was referring VGchartz for the article.

This is what happens when Xbox releases with PS together. The global sales are just untouchable.

In the 7th generation, the 360 was lucky in many ways followed by Sony mistakes, to get M$ where they are now.

It's the beginning of something beautiful that's for sure. 7 million already! MS should bail and sell Xbox to Sega.

In less than six months of availability; I confess to being impressed. Dat backlog puts me off, as yet, though.

I daresay that my backlog is close to a thousand hours... And that doesn't include what I want to play but haven't bought.

amazing, no one thought next gen consoles would of sold half as well as they have!
my question though is why?
why have they flown off shelves?
i mean yea its been SEVEN long years putting up with the same old soggy tired yesterdays newspaper for SEVEN freaking years now, but the newspapers releasing for ps4 aint exactly that much different, and theres not that many either, so again, why are they selling so well?
if its had this good of a launch, how much better would of it been if $ony had 3 big name exclusives on launch, a uncharted, GOW, GT, SOCOM, all within the first year of launch, and had pleanty of units on supply?
i mean game wise its been pretty sh*t, not many new games out, and what little we do have is just more ps3 repeated crap!
so how much better would of it been if we actually had some amazing new games to show off these new pieces of plastic?

so the million dollar question is, yea there has been 7M units sold, but how many of those units, how many of those purchasers are actually happy with their decision to jump in now instead of wait?
i wouldnt be surprised to see a massive percentage regretting it.
allot of people jumped the gun to get in early, and only now are realising crap ive just spent at least 650 on a black box im not going to touch for a year!

You never have anything positive to say about Playstation
Do you go to xbox sites and praise sony & nintendo?

If I paid $650 for my PS4, I'd be pretty upset too. Especially since you can buy one for $399.

Are you aware that there are more games available this round of 'next-gen' consoles when compared to previous generation starts?

Serious inquiry...How old are you? I ask, because your post reeks from inexperience.

of course theres more games for them.
1 half of them are remakes of last gen games.
2 indie studios have exploded in the past few years creating a whole new market.
3 last gen lasted by far allot longer than previous gens, so developers are itching to move onto new systems.
your point is though?
problem is not the amount of games, the problem is the amount of games WORTH playing!
ie NOT remakes or ports of last gen games, not indie games no one bought a next gen console so they could play indie games, and not games that are sequels built up exclusively for next gen systems but are almost identical twins of their last gen counterparts.
take all those games out of the games out on ps4, and your left with a amount of games you could count on two hands!
than filter it even more with games actually fun and worth playing, worth picking up a next gen system for, and your left with NOTHING!
THATS the problem!

Im glad i am part of the 7 million. I hope to see 15 million by the end of the summer and dare i say fifty million by the end of the year or higher or am i pushing it. anyways i still have my launch console 6 months into this generation. if this was last generation and my original 360 launch console it would have died by now. So thank you sony for giving me my gaming spark back

Fifteen million by the end of this year is possible, but I wouldn't say plausible. Fifty million in four year's time, not much sooner than that, though.

Awesome 7 million sold!
And thats to customers ie. peoples homes & not shipped to stores like the BS that MS pulled one year into the 360's lifetime with "10 million units sold"(3 million of which were defective)
