March NPD: PS4 Tops Again, Industry Enjoys Another Rise
The next generation continues to barrel forward, much to the delight of the console manufacturers.
The March NPD results are in and while Sony's PlayStation 4 once again came out on top for the third month in a row, the industry as a whole is still doing very well.
Perhaps the most telling quote from the NPD Group is this:
"PS4 and Xbox One continue to see success with cumulative sales of the two consoles through the first five month currently totaling more than double that of their predecessors, the PS3 and Xbox 360."
The PS4 remained the top-selling console in the US despite the Xbox One/PC exclusive Titanfall leading the software charge. All told, the Xbox One moved 311,000 units and the Xbox 360 managed to shift 111,000. Sony didn't provide us with specific monthly numbers, but they just recently announced that the PS4 had topped 7 million worldwide.
The industry on the whole enjoyed a 3 percent year-over-year rise, thanks mostly to strong hardware sales (up 78 percent) and a modest uptick in accessories (up 4 percent). Finished the NPD:
"As seen in the past few months, hardware sales for March 2014 saw strong growth over March 2013, up 78 percent. Sales increases were driven completely by consoles sales, which were up over 100 percent, due mainly to continued success from the PS4 and Xbox One."
