March NPD: PS4 Tops Again, Industry Enjoys Another Rise

The next generation continues to barrel forward, much to the delight of the console manufacturers.

The March NPD results are in and while Sony's PlayStation 4 once again came out on top for the third month in a row, the industry as a whole is still doing very well.

Perhaps the most telling quote from the NPD Group is this:

"PS4 and Xbox One continue to see success with cumulative sales of the two consoles through the first five month currently totaling more than double that of their predecessors, the PS3 and Xbox 360."

The PS4 remained the top-selling console in the US despite the Xbox One/PC exclusive Titanfall leading the software charge. All told, the Xbox One moved 311,000 units and the Xbox 360 managed to shift 111,000. Sony didn't provide us with specific monthly numbers, but they just recently announced that the PS4 had topped 7 million worldwide.

The industry on the whole enjoyed a 3 percent year-over-year rise, thanks mostly to strong hardware sales (up 78 percent) and a modest uptick in accessories (up 4 percent). Finished the NPD:

"As seen in the past few months, hardware sales for March 2014 saw strong growth over March 2013, up 78 percent. Sales increases were driven completely by consoles sales, which were up over 100 percent, due mainly to continued success from the PS4 and Xbox One."

There we have it. Even with MS firing it's Yamato cannon or Death Star blast with Titanfall, it still wasn't enough to take even a month away from Sony. I really expected MS to come out on top for the month of March, maybe even Sony did too.

Woo hoo for PS4!

Just wanted to add the latest sales numbers from the Vita, 3DS, PSP, Wii and Wii U which were omitted from the official NPD report:

Vita (PSV): 10K+
3DS: 159K+
Wii U: 70k+
Wii: 28k
PSP: 5k

Those numbers were confirmed by neogaf's Creamsugar & industry analyst, David Gibson.

Even though they no longer show PS2 numbers in their tally, I wouldn't be surprised that that the PS2 isn't still selling some more too.
(Just look at the PSP numbers at 5K)

If MS cannot win over the US market, they are finished.

Like I've said before here, the MS shareholders want out of the videogame business. They've had it with the money pit that the Xbox brand has become since its inception. Losing billions of dollars per year.

This might be the beginning of the end for MS. And once MS acknowledges defeat and leaves the scene, it will be extremely hard for someone else to dive right in to take its place (looking at you Apple).

Leaving the entire home console arena for Sony and Sony alone.

The return of the king! XD

Re-Enter NINTENDO!

I'd really like to see Nintendo get serious with their console hardware again and compete on equal specs with Sony. I'd probably go back to owning two consoles again - something I haven't done since I retired the Gamecube.

@SaiyanSempai - Nintendo has no chance on the home console front. Not saying that they can't hang in there and keep doing what they're doing. Just that there is no point to it.

Sony owns the home console scene. MS stopped being competition and they're becoming less and less relevant to Sony.

Nintendo should join Sony. Each company would complement each other. Sony knows how to make home consoles and Nintendo knows how to sell handheld systems.

Imagine playing a real next-gen Super Mario or next-gen Zelda or Metroid on the PS4.

Its just a matter of time.

I agree, it would be great to see Nintendo stop with the Horrible Gamepad and weak console specs. I am this close to buying a WiiU Pro Controller. Finishing DKCTF was such a chore with the Gamepad. My son and I kept saying "Wish we could use the DS4 on WiiU!". Also, Nintendo needs to 90% focus on the WiiU and 10% on the 3DS. The 3DS is slowly killing the WiiU.

Just makes me anxious for E3 to see whether we get anything genuinely exciting for the PS4 and XBO in the next year and a half. The Order alone isn't enough for new games that strongly appeal to me :(

I'm curious how many copies of Titanfall sold on XO alone compared to Infamous.

VGChartz says 1.35M for TF, against 1.03M for iF. No guarantee of accuracy, or up-to-date information.

Not surprised by this news at all. PS4 is a great system that is stronger in every way and sold by a company that caters to gamers. It's also important to note that the X1 has sold 5 million consoles to retailers and not gamers. Sony has sold 7 million to gamers. I bet the X1 is at about 4.1 million consoles sold to gamers. This sales data comes after Microsoft gave away the farm to try and sell X1. What surprises me is that there are about 4.1 million gamers that have purchased a X1. There are just to many positives attached to the PS4. PS+ offers an amazing value compared to Games With Gold. Vita Remote Play is the most fantastic feature I have ever received from a console. Sony has the plan in place and the hardware to back it up. The best part about this is that Sony hasn't really focused on the PS4. They have been making games for the PS3 as well. The next year is going to be amazing for the PS4 and Playstation Nation.

With PSNow and Morpheus there is even more reasons to be excited about owning a PS4!

Off topic, If you haven't had the chance, give FFXIVARR a try. It's my first MMORPG and I am addicted. I have already put in 10 hours since Tuesday. My Gladiator reached level 17 last night. I learned how to change the color of my armor with dye. My armor looks so good and I am no longer a patchwork of ridiculous color. The story is good so far and the FATES have been really fun. Mixing it up with other gamers against a common foe is really satisfying. The graphics are beautiful as well.

The PS4 is the best console available offering great games like FFXIVARR! Sony isn't so close minded and offers so many options. Still have Planetside 2 coming at some point this year! Because of these reasons Sony is winning the console war still building momentum.

Another thing about M$ that you might not know....

I'm not sure if it's the same way with their new X1 but on their 360's, if you can't get on live(even the FREE live), you "CAN NOT" save any game you're playing.

For some reason, I haven't been able to go on live with my gamertag for the last 4 months & whenever I'd try to play a game after it, if I stopped after 5-7 hours of play & then went back to it the next day, it would always re-start me at the very beginning as if I had never even played it.

I would up having to use a funky new gamertag that M$ sent me automated over the phone with no way to get my old gametag back.
Soooo, so much for M$'s great support system....

F*ck the F'ers
