Dragon Age: Inquisition Date Confirmed, New Gameplay Trailer

Time to circle another early autumn date on your calendar.

BioWare has announced that their highly anticipated RPG, Dragon Age: Inquisition, will launch on October 7 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. To celebrate, they've also provided us with a fantastic new gameplay trailer (see it below).

The trailer clues us into a pre-order incentive, too: Putting a deposit on the game will net you the Flames of the Inquisition pack, although we don't know what it contains just yet. BioWare has worked hard on the latest Dragon Age entry, incorporating a lot of fan feedback and implementing a bigger, more dynamic world. We should also see that excellent depth a few of the hardcore fans missed in Dragon Age II.

This fall is going to be packed once again; a new LotR game (Shadow of Mordor) and Alien: Isoluation are also scheduled to launch the same day as Inquisition. And that's really just the beginning.

I might be looking forward to this even more than Destiny. That's two HUGE releases this fall, and hopefully the Order ships and doesn't disappoint to give us a nice exclusive to boot.

It's a great problem to have, as always, but yeah, we're gonna be swamped, same as every year. I realized like an hour ago I have three or four games from last year about 90 percent done that completely fell by the wayside, guess I have plans tonight after all...

They really need to start breaking some of these big games up so everything doesn't hit in just a few short months. I'll be picking alien isolation up that day instead. This game looks great but now this is going to go on a watch list for next year.

Jeez, that's THREE huge games this fall -- Destiny, Dragon Age, and Alien: Isolation. I am gonna have to buy both Dragon Age and Alien on the same day -- I'm looking forward to both way too much to wait for either one.

Yeah that's my problem. I've been looking forward to Dragon Age since they announced it, but maybe I will get both as an impulse buy.

If the Lord of the Rings team knows what's good for them they'll either bump up or delay their game a few weeks. They don't stand a chance against Dragon Age.

I'm inclined to! At least if the edition is snacksy.

This looks like everything I would want out of an open world, story-driven fantasy RPG on the PS4/next gen era. Infamous, Killzone, Need for Speed, a few others have all hinted in one way or another about what we can look forward to this generation. This Dragon Age looks like all of that potential manifest.

Telly, I doubt it will be fully open world but more the typical BioWare style with a path that in reality is pretty linear but with a great illusion of being open - and I think that's fine. The main attraction with the BioWare games is the story and characters anyway.

I think this game will be BioWare's return to splendour.

I dunno, they made a big point of saying it would be more open and they were inspired by Skyrim. So while it may not be as massive it could be something closer to the world in Two Worlds II which was big and explorable but you couldn't get lost.

I got a feeling it will only be larger maps than before - but each map has their fixed entry and exit points like how BioWare always makes them. It's just more "stuff" between those two points.
That's how I picture it being. No way they'll make a fully "sandbox" game like Skyrim & co. I don't even want them to. It's just not their style.

Looks great, but not a lot of actual gameplay footage so it's hard to judge how the game will play, do you still play from the top down 3rd person view as in the earlier games?? More importantly will it play like an RPG or more like an action game??

The few shots that looks like it would be from gameplay are a little worrying, showing actioney evades, rolls etc which looks more like something like God of war or similar game... and the viewpoint in those scenes look more like a hybrid first person view like Mass Effect... another worrying aspect...

Hopefully I'm wrong and this will play more like the original Dragon age with a much improved new engine!

You obviously have not watched any of the YouTube vids on this. It does have the evades and rolls and if you play a mage they semi-teleport. However, you can also pause the action and play it from a top down perspective, issue commands, and what not if you choose to be more strategical. Best of both worlds imo. Also, equipping ALL of your team members with their weapons and armor is back for more of that micro managing rpg goodness!

I guess I'm alone in thinking this one doesn't look all that special. Everything from the dated looking combat animations to a sense of scale that looks stuck in the last gen, just doesn't do it for me yet.

..even the graphics look sorta like generic cg'ish fantasy. where's the uniquely identifying art direction?

To be fair, BioWare has never really excelled in the visual department. That said, the landscape video we saw a while back were pretty darn impressive if you ask me. And I think what we see here *do* have the uniquely identifying art direction. I think it has BioWare written all over it...?

that is fair, Beam.
I don't feel like being fair right now though. I want excellence, not last-gen stuff with a new coat of paint.

...anyway, the art direction. it just looks like generic D&D'ish stuff. I shouldn't be surprised. Dragon Age is essentially D&D without the license. I can look at other fantasy games like Dark Souls, Dragon's Crown, Guild Wars, Final Fantasy 14, Skyrim, and The Witcher and see stuff that looks it's own from an aesthetic and implementation stand point. I think it's easy to get stuck in the generic fantasy template trap and so I admire when games use generic fantasy as a base-case reference but shape it to their own so it isn't so predictable. But I suppose generic Tolken'ish and D&D'ish is DA's audience. I just can't get too excited for it.

Their uniqueness has always primarily been found in their characters and writing. That's BioWare.
And it's why I love'em!

really dunno what to expect from this, DA2 was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO boring!
like a warm glass of milk, turnstile and lullaby boring!
one thing i hate about allot of fantasy RPGs these days is the settings, the worlds, just feel so dull and listless.
dragons dogma, and DA2 perfect examples.
i actually really liked dragons dogma because of its unique combat system and the hiring of souls was a neat concept, not to mention the grab mechanic which the whole combat system was centered around.
but the world, the monsters, the characters, could not be more 2 dimensional!
one thing i really hate about fantasy RPGs lately, you either have a amazing beautiful alive believable world like skyrim and really boring combat like skyrim, or you have a really dull boring world and characters like kingdoms or dragons dogma, but with a amazing indepth innovative creative combat system.
why do we always have to choose?
amazing believable world with crap combat, or boring dull and listless world but amazing combat.
why do we always have to choose?
why cant we have both?
one thing i really hope this will do, inquisition needs to be the game that breaks that trend and gives us both!
but i aint holding my breath.........
