Rumor: PS4 Controller Looks "More Or Less" Like The DS3

There have been a lot of rumors flying around concerning the default controller for the upcoming PlayStation 4.

Some of them say the gamepad won't look anything like what you see here; i.e., the standard Dual Shock controller that has been in existence for nearly three full generations of PlayStation hardware.

But the most recent rumor from a supposed inside source says that in fact, the new controller might look a lot like the Dual Shock. According to VG24/7, the only difference is that a touch-pad will reside on the front, thereby forcing the Start and Select buttons to move. The source says the controller is "more or less" the same shape as the current Dual Shock, so that's good news. Oh, and the L2 and R2 buttons have apparently been remodeled, which I wouldn't mind, either.

We've heard about the possibility of a touch-pad before, but previous rumors said it would be on the back of the controller, ala the PlayStation Vita. We've also heard about a "Share" button on the PS4 gamepad but apparently, this new source says that doesn't exist. Guess we'll just have to wait...and thankfully, that wait shouldn't be long.

Hmm, I thought this topic was already covered here. In any case, if we're talking about the front, I'm not sure how a touchpad will do much in gaming when you have two sticks. Laptops have had touchpad for years and I'm not aware of games that take advantage of it. K, not a good comparison, but if anything, I think the touchpad is more of a purpose for other multimedia tasks more so than gaming. I just hope it doesn't raise the price of controllers to ridiculous range.

I guess a good idea of how it would be used, would be on how some games work on the DS and 3DS.

You have two screens to work with in those devices. On the main screen, you see where all the gameplay action takes place. On the other secondary screen, you deal with menus and inventories.

In many DS/3DS games, you have the menus and inventories in plain view while playing. And you can change weapons, select items, etc. without having to pause the game.

I suppose the PS4 controller could work in the same way.

That's what I was thinking as well with the new controller design.

And it could have more uses as well which my mind is just going crazy of what it could be used for.

They should make it bigger and from carbon fiber. Buttons with LEDs and longer lasting analog sticks. Cos all my controllers have their left sticks broken. Oh and please make it so it doesn't squeek aswell.

I wouldn't mind seeing a touch screen/pad that is used as a secondary D-pad for quick swapping weapons or healing items or "to use" items... I guess we all will just have to wait and see what comes out...

Maybe the touch pad has a LCD screen that displays a share button. Oh the drama!

I think in terms of "LCD screen," Sony would want the Vita to do that sorts of stuff, similarly to the Wii U. Other than that, it would be too much for those that would want to buy multiples of it. Adding an LCD screen is costly.

Thats good to hear it will still look like a Dual Shock and Im happy to hear L2&R2 are being remodeled.. Hopefully Sony will not keep us in the dark too much longer because I know they like to announce something yet give no information until later.

Not sure how reliable VG24/7 is but we should be cautious. You're saying that it "will." I'm not disagreeing because I do hope you're right, but until it's official we can't be too certain. Then again I don't know VG24/7's credibility and you may so perhaps I'm being too cautious.

I don't think they will stray away from the original design that much, probably will redo the L2 and R2, I think they might make the controller a bit bigger, but I'm not sure. I am wondering if they are going to do anything with the joysticks, maybe add a bit more resistance to them?

I guess we will have to wait and see, but I honestly can't wait to see what they do with the controller.

I dont like it. Controllers are already expensive enough that I just never got around to buying a second one. Now put a touch pad on it and charge what, $100? No thank you.

But then like if it breaks off I've got a shoulder button covered in glue that I can't get off and could make trying to fit another trigger enhancer impossible. I know it's silly but I spent a lot of money on that red controller.

In my experience, the PS2 controller had the best feel of out of all the Dualshocks. Please make a Dualsock that is more ergonomic to the adult size manly hands.

I wonder if they aren't planning to do that this time, saying it's more or less the same could leave room for a size increase. I'm okay with how it is but a bigger one wouldn't hurt.

I think the PlayStation controller should change, now I don't mean go from the current Dualshock to the N64 controller type change, but I mean do the changes necessary to have a perfect controller.

I know a lot of close minded people or Sony/PlayStation fanboys will say it's perfect but it really isn't. Don't look at how things are you, look at the bigger picture, the triggers most definitely need to be improved, the overall shape of the controller needs to be improved, it needs to fit naturally and comfortably in all hands and feel the same way no matter what button combination you press which is most definitely not the case right now and maybe how the analog sticks are as a whole and definitely the overall look (sexyness) of the controller, for example, lights and logos.

as a fan of the gioteck triggers im particularly happy to hear about remodelled L2/R2 triggers. I just hope they give an option either on the controller or in the xmb to switch the L1/R1 buttons with L2/R2 triggers for all of us who prefer to aim/shoot that way - even in 2013 EA shooters (apart from Crysis) are too lazy to provide this option in game

i hope they change the shape, after going from other controlers back to the DS3 man do i get cramps!
its so uncomfortable, like going from a nice smooth device that naturally shapes itself you your hand, to a device thats just a box all jagged edges.
not nice at all!
feels really old, it NEEDS a redesign!

really want to see a gamepad type of controller too, hopefully they wont force us to use the vita for that.
not including one will be a MASSIVE mistake!
especially after M$s obsession with smartglass, $ony would be the only ones left out.
