Is Uncharted 4 Gameplay Enough For Sony To "Win" E3 2014?

Obviously, this is just for the sake of argument, as I fully expect Sony to show off more than just Uncharted 4 at E3 this year.

Even if they do have plenty of other games on tap, though, most would agree that the new Uncharted would be the heaviest-hitting title in the presentation lineup. And if various industry insiders are correct and we do get gameplay - perhaps to cap off Sony's press conference - is that, in and of itself, enough for the PlayStation brand to "win" the event?

I put "win" in quotations because I always thought it was silly to determine a "winner" at an event where the industry is supposed to "win." While it's certainly true that competition is healthy, as Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida said, I still say something like E3 is a chance for the entire gaming world to shine. Anyway, given the immense popularity and critical acclaim that surrounded the Uncharted franchise last generation, one has to assume that gameplay of the first series entry on the PS4 will absolutely explode.

At the same time, we hear Microsoft might actually show off some new Xbox One exclusive IPs, and there's always Halo 5. Nintendo might surprise the hell out of everyone, too...what's your take?

A three prong attack to devastate the competition.

1.Start with a brand spanking new AAAA IP. Something to destroy any doubt some may have about Sonys commitment to provide new and phenomenal gaming experiences.

2. Announce a poached franchise. Something that was never on a Sony console before. For that WTF! moment.

3. End with Uncharted 4 gameplay and some teasers of one or two unannounced 1st party IP.

An E3 of such precision and magnitude would cement not only the lead Sony has but also continue the restored confidence I have in Sony in its entirety.

I'm hoping Guerrilla Games new game is shown and it's not an FPS.

Iam so sick of hearing about uncharted... no it not enough to win E3 what will win E3 is them showing all the OTHER great games coming to PS4 not some old washed up series. And no i dont hate uncharted i really enjoyed those games it just time for ND to move on to the next big thing and put uncharted to rest IMHO...

I half agree with you.

Just in the way that it frustrates me that everyone see's Uncharted as Sony's holy franchise. It is the one thing that will save the console and is going to be the most amazing experience ever in a game.

I mean seriously, it is ONE game. ONE game is never enough to win anything in the console war. I also very strongly hate when people refer to things in a way that make it seem like a sort of 'one-man-team' situation, like Uncharted is Sony's ONLY great franchise.

It'll be a boon, but it won't win the show unless it shows us something we've never seen before, and I think that ND won't want to mess with their winning formula enough to do that. Nah, Sony needs to roll out more than just that one gun. They need strong showings from The Order and Driveclub and at least one other major exclusive, and even then it still depends on what MS and Nintendo have up their sleeves.

If Sony's heavy hitter is going to be Uncharted I'm going to be very disappointed.

Just like Killzone and Infamous, it is nice to have new games in the series but they are getting old.

Those were the PS3 signature series but I think it is time to put them in the back burner and show us new IP's that define the PS4 generation.

I'm looking forward to The Order and news about Driveclub, the later has been so hyped and postponed it better be very good.

Yes, exactly!

To me, Killzone, Infamous and Uncharted are NOT Sony's prime franchises anymore. Honestly, although Killzone and Infamous sold well, they have not been held in the same reverence as they were in the PS3 era. I believe the same thing will happen with Uncharted 4.

Great new IP's are the only thing that will win the console war.

They should let it stay off the radars for a few years and give it a comeback when people didn't expect it.

Everyone assumes a new Uncharted is around the corner. It's just too predictable. It's like Sony only has one trick left in their bag.

I think you guys are missing the point. I dont have enough fingers on both hands to count the amount of games that release bi yearly or up to every three years. There is so many of them out there and this is the funny part is people want Uncharted to take a rest when developers like Bungie and other devs were shoving ONLY Halo down people's throats all last generation and the previous. ND produced 2 of the best games ever in one generation. While I don't want to see Uncharted get stale, I totally disagree with what you both are saying.

Depending on how a Uncharted 4 turns out will determine if it needs a break. If sales are still up and even climbing from previous entries all that means is people want it. Why stop? Business wise it makes no sense. From an actual fan of the series it makes no sense.

It's not a surprise that Beam would bring this up. He doesn't even play them let alone enjoy them. But it begs the question why you would think it needs a break when the industry obviously doesn't.

So we should focus on a community with about 20-30 active people in which maybe X% have vocally agreed with you? That's interesting.

I'm not saying ND shouldn't put focus on other things because it's obvious their talents far exceed Uncharted. However, for them to take a break from Uncharted especially in the midst of a new console launch would be a bit strange.

It's ok to disagree, Bigrailer. I just don't think it's ok to question those that might not agree with you. Sure it's a small crowd here on PSX. I just notice that of those of us who's here, seemingly the majority think it should take a rest. For whatever that observation is worth, I still think that is an interesting observation.

I believe Sony is better off with showing something *else* than Uncharted. Uncharted has to a certain extent played its role *unless* they show something completely new this time around. And well, with all respect to Naughty Dog, but I don't think they will.

If you look at all previous ND titles. They have brought out something nex each generation since the PSX.
PSX...Crash Bandicoot (who is well overdue a deccent comeback!)
PS2...Jak and Daxter
PS3..Uncharted (and the Last of Us)
PS4..Something different again!!

Personally, I'm on the fence on this one as take Crash for example..they took a break from that and never went back. The issue if they did drop Uncharted could end up similar in that they just move all their focus to something else. But it's ND so I'm happy either way.

Well bigrailer19, our community here is for all intensive purposes a microcosm for the gaming community as a whole, or at least the Playstation fanbase of that community, and if there are a certain percent of Playstation fanboys in a microcosm which agree with Beam, then it is logical to assume that there is a substantial number of people in the community who think this.

I for one agree, and have seen many people say the same thing, Sony are known for their amazing IP's. They really need to continue this, as it seems like Microsoft are finally catching on, and are pushing brand new IP more then ever, while Sony is falling back on faithful IP from the last generation.

I want to see what great new stories developers like Guerilla, SP, SSM, and ND can bring us.

Depending on what MS has in store, Uncharted 4 may or may not be enough. Regardless, Sony's E3 will complete a fail if it comes and goes and a port of a 2013 is still the biggest exclusive set for 2014. Even the PS3's first year wasn't this pathetic as far as exclusive content goes. Sure it's got some indie games, unfortunately I generally am not big on those releases so that does nothing for me. Right now this is a $400 paperweight. 2015 had better be a vast improvement.

Uncharted 4 has a chance to win E3 considering Naughty Dog's quality of past games, especially now that it's a PS4 exclusive. Personally I like to see the quality and the setting of the new Uncharted which are jaw dropping in the past installments. But definitely they will have a tough competition from new IP's, the new next gen exclusives assassin's creed and call of duty.

no of course not, so what hope does uncharted have, if halo, THE biggest franchise in the industry, THE daddy who brought FPS to consoles, who proved all the snobs shooters cant work on consoles, if that does not have a chance, than how does uncharted?
no games enough to win E3, the whole point of E3 is to show off what you have coming.
its a this is why you are buying our console, or if you already have, a this is why your keeping our console.

Wrong, Mr Anonymous (and why do people come on forums and post anonymously?). Nintendo announcing a Pokemon MMO, with a free 90 day pass, run by Blizzard, packed into a $250 500GB Wii U bundle would win E3. Period. And yes, I would buy a Wii U solely for that game.

Seriously, if you believe Halo brought shooters to consoles you are very young and naive. I can name more shooters than you have fingers off the top of my head that were on consoles before the Xbox franchise even existed. Taking nothing away from Halo or Bungie but "refining" the genre is not "creating".

Nintendo won't be showing off too much I think. They've been unveiling stuff left and right and the most recent Ninty Direct pretty much summed up everything they could have shown off at E3. MS doesn't have anything up their sleeve besides halo and gears. Sony probably doesn't have much either, besides uncharted.

You can bet Microsoft is going to come out swinging with a surprise or two (or three) this year. I think Sony needs to do a lot more than show some gameplay of a proven franchise. But of course Sony is WELL aware that this console war is just getting started and that they'll need to bring in the heavy artillery if they want to stay on the offensive. So I expect some HUGE announcements that we just don't know anything about yet :)

Both Sony and MS have to come out swinging. Their consoles may be selling well but the lineups are complete garbage to this point. I expect things to improve but it is taking way longer than it should. After E3 comes and goes and Uncharted 4 and Halo 5 are announced for 2015 at the earliest, it is safe to say that 2014 is a complete and utter joke as the release list for the rest of this year would be LOL terrible if I hadn't spent $400 on the PortStation4 and some people hadn't spent $500 on the Kinectbox One. First years are usually bad but they have never been as putrid as this. The best game for PS4 will be a port of a 2013 PS3 game, that's is beyond ridiculous but sadly nobody is calling Sony on this because hey 'the PS4 is selling awesome.' Who the heck cares how well a console sells if there are no games to play? And right now that is exactly the case with PS4. No games.

Ooh, and on Nintendo -- I am hoping beyond hope they finally announce a new Metroid -- in the Prime style, 2D, I don't care. Enough with the countless Mario riffs! Oh, and I definitely think we'll get the first glimpse of the next Zelda, too, though I'm genuinely curious whether it will be for 3DS or Wii U (or both).

As for Microsoft -- I think they'll dish some details on halo 5 and then say it's coming out next year. To tide everyone over, I have to think that Halo 2 anniversary edition everyone is talking about will turn out to be real. I would love to see what's new with Gears of War but that's at least two years out, unfortunately.

I would much rather see Jak and Daxter on the PS4 with Pixar movie quality graphics than a new Uncharted.

I felt like Uncharted 3 was worse than Uncharted 2 in both storytelling and the pacing of the story. Multiplayer was awesome though.

I just think that if they do do Uncharted 4 its going to have to do things different, I do not want it to be like Infamous SS which was a very fun game but basically just Infamous with better graphics.

They have to offer something that wasn't possibly on the PS3 other than graphics. That is the only way I will get hyped for next gen games.

That being said there is already an Uncharted 4 teaser so we know its coming eventually just not sure when.

Also would anyone else like to see a PS4 Ape Escape game? I friggin loved those games, and would love to see it make a next gen debut.

As much as I loved Knack when I was playing it I couldn't help but think how much I wanted to play a new Jak game :D

I did like Uncharted 3 and yes Uncharted 2 was going to be hard to follow for sure. I just hope that with all the staff that has left ND lately that we get a next gen feeling Uncharted game :) other than just the graphics.

My biggest complaint with the series is how little the enemies care for their lives. I love how in Infamous SS the enemies actually surrender, THAT is something I have been missing out on and is a feature I consider to be next gen.

I was rolling my eyes in UC3 when the mansion was burning and the enemies were standing there trying to kill me, instead of you know trying to get out of the building themselves. The fist fight against the big dude too just had me thinking this guy knows we are going to die right... How much were these guys getting paid :P

So in that level I think it should have been more of an escape level with enemies trying to get out as well but maybe throwing obstacles behind them or taking pot shots at you as they fled the house.

I would like this to extend to the main game too. If I kill 5 out of 6 or even 7 guys I would love to see them just high tail it out of there and try to escape, or just put there hands up and drop their weapons admitting defeat.

That is the sort of stuff I want to see in the next Uncharted along with a great story and tight gameplay, I felt UC3 just had a terrible amount of plot holes although the characters were great.

No. Uncharted is not enough.

It has become too much of an expectation to win anything, seriously the thing that wins E3 will be something we didn't see coming.

Will COD ever be able to win another E3? No. Why?

COD4 won it's E3 debut because it blew everyone away, no one expected it to look as great as it was, but that won't ever happen again, as that is now a yearly franchise, it is an expectation.

Everyone has expected UC since the PS4 was announced, not even the reveal at the GTTV awards was surprising, the hype after that reveal was basically none existent.
