Hellraid Passes PS3/360, Now Coming To Next-Gen Consoles

Next-gen-bound!

Dead Island developer Techland has announced that its first-person co-op hack 'n slash game Hellraid has shifted to next-generation consoles and PC. It was originally supposed to launch later last year for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC; now it's being redone for the new systems. It's currently set for 2015.

The developer described the the project as a "AAA-quality" game but it won't be released in disc format. Purely a digital title, it won't be sold at $60 although we don't yet have an exact price point. In speaking to GameSpot, Techland producer Marcin Kruczkiewicz said the studio considered supporting both the previous-gen and next-gen consoles, but decided it would be too much of a hassle:

"We decided to move on to new consoles because of the possibilities that they provide. In general, this is the overall quality of graphics, which is significant boost for our game. Moreover, while developing the game...when we run our builds on the previous generation of consoles, it just looks far worse than we would like. So the new generation of consoles, the power is a bit bigger than the average PC. So it doesn't limit us at all."

He added that gamers can expect high-resolution textures, better special effects, and more sophisticated rendering due to the power of the new consoles. As for whether or not Hellraid will run in full 1080p on PS4 and Xbox One, Kruczkiewicz siad it's "too early to say" but they want the game to "meet the highest expectations." A new gameplay video has been released, too. Check it out:

hah, first person hack n slash is always fun. I think this was a smart move to go next gen.

Most folks say "Hey there's a big base for last gen consoles and we shouldn't ignore that market" but I think it boosts the profile of the game if it is seen as exclusively next gen. Since there aren't a lot of those out there it can capitalize on being something fully new and thus worthy of attention.

I forgot about this game completely, but maybe when they show off next gen gameplay I'll get excited for it.

Something about the visuals reminds me of Oblivion...

It looks somewhat interesting, but, unlike Dying Light, that trailer shows off nothing that makes me think that new-gen is a necessary consideration for the title. Here's hope Techland learns from Dying Light to make Hellraid better than it currently looks, 'cos it seems very last-gen at the moment

I agree with Lawless, this looks like Oblivion or Skyrim. Especially the shield blocking, which looks fantastic! I am not complaining as the textures are obviously better. I also think there cannot be to many of these types of games. Also, having it first person is different. Just disappointed in how long I have to wait for it. At least I don't have to wait long for Bound By Flame!!! I hope it scores high, I am in need of a PS4 game like this.
