Driveclub Director: 1080p And 30FPS Is The Way To Go

Those of you who demand 60 frames per second may be disappointed.

However, the development experts at Evolution Studios say 1080p and 30FPS for the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive Driveclub is "absolutely the best thing."

Game director Paul Rustchynsky told VG24/7 that 30FPS would be the best option for this particular project:

"As we've got more familiar with the hardware, and also, looking at what we wanted from the game, we decided that 1080p, 30 frames per second is absolutely the best thing, because what that allows us to do is to deliver the most detailed cars in-race that you will ever have seen."

Rustchynsky added that they're creating "some of the biggest tracks you will ever see in a racing game" and we can also expect some pretty amazing environments. They'll feature a nifty "full global illumination system" that alters the time of day and even reflections. This is the type of next-gen technical prowess we've been waiting to see from Sony's new console, right?

The director pointed out that inFamous: Second Son looked and played pretty damn good at 30FPS. We'll also mention the amazing Uncharted franchise. See, 60FPS is really only essential for certain types of games, we contend.

Sounds good for single player, but not so much for multiplayer.

Metal Gear Solid V in 1080p with 60 fps is just amazing to look and play.
Japanese games are using this format for all games.

Yeah, but you also have to look at the graphical fidelty of these 1080p/60fps games. What would be real amazing is if the games look as good or better, and still run 1080p/60fps.

I'm all about my racers at 60fps. I'd take a lower res at 60fps over 1080p at 30fps. I look forward to Polyphony Digital doing 60fps at 1080p with GT7 while looking better than Drive Club doing it.

EDIT: but I'm fine with games like Infamous and Uncharted at 30fps.

inFamous was okay like that but you'd think the NPCs could look better if they are gonna have the low rate. Plus there could have been more going on powers and destruction wise, there was a megaton less mayhem than in previous games for some reason.

They really should have just bumped it down to 900p Honestly unless your playing on a huge 50"+ screen you won't notice a difference and even then it is tiny. Whenever I have trouble running a PC game at 1080p switching to 900p is usually my first go to before trying to turn down graphical options and it is almost always the better way to go in my experience.

I would much rather have 900p 50-60fps vs 1080p 30fps in a racing game. But hell least the game will look that extra tiny bit more gorgeous I guess.

I'm a racing fan, but I'm okay with 30fps on Arcade racing games. They require way less precision than sims. The big thing for this gen for me, is if they're going to run 30ps, it better be locked. That's huge in a racing game.

I've seen videos of many racing games running at 30fps, and honestly I'm fine with it. Then again when I play GT, it's hard to get back to it. The bluriness stuff they do in 30fps is annoying sometimes, but like I said, it's not like you need precision in every turn. You just "drift" through them lol.

I disagree. The game will be impacted by the lack of precision that comes from having it locked at 30FPS, but if that's what Evolution wants to do, I won't crucify them. I would much rather see a reduction on the pixel count in exchange for the better performance, but whatever.

That being said, I do believe the claim about the most detailed cars in-race that I've ever seen. The looks of #DC are utterly jaw-dropping. I'm just worried about the gameplay.

Maybe 60fps would be better but going between gameplay n cinematics might be hard to accomplish without going from 60 down to 30 n its probably easier to make everything 30 than go back n forth n make it fluid like

World sounds like Project Cars may be the game for you. They are targeting 1080p 60fps with the present build running at that on the PS4. Also not only is the game 60fps it is being designed with the Morpheus in mind so you may want to get a vibrating racing chassis to complement that new wheel of yours. XD

We'll see, I'm not a huge racing fan and don't want to spend a lot so I just bought a basic thrustmaster Ferrari. Driving with a controller just isn't any fun.

I have no idea why I mentioned it at all since it's for PS3 not PS4 :P

World,
Maybe you should check out the HKS Hypermax III Racing Controller...

It's shaped like the Dualshock, but has depressable speed & brake buttons w/feedback, also has game pre-sets for both the Need For Speed & Gran Turismo franchises.

The only downside is that it is a corded controller(but it has a good 10 foot cord)

Anyway, here's the specs on it...
Details:

ANALOG PRESSURE ACCERATION AND BRAKE PEDALS Full range pressure sensors allow real world control over gas and brake pedals. absolute control is necessary to execute the advanced heel-toe racing technique for drifting! apply full throttle for and exiting corner turns!

•CONTROL STEERING WHEEL Pressurized racing wheel enables full rotational range for left and right turn control. automatic re-centering racing wheel utilizes center indicator, enabling full tactile control while preserving driver on-road focus.

•DIGITAL PRESSURE GUAGE DISPLAY Light up numerical indicator displays your real-time pressure being applied to the accelerator and brake pedals. Dynamic digital readout incrementally displays pressure readout in every millisecond.

•RACE MODE SWITCH remap gas/brake pedal with single button configuration switch. one-touch switching between square/x and l2/r2configurations.

•JOYSTICK SWITCH Full dual access to both left and right analog joystick. Licenses for HKS, Car Parts and Car Accessories Companies

It listed originally for $59.99, but I've seen them on sale for as low as $39.95. I know that Amazon, GameStop, & Ebay sells them.

FYI, if you're curious, you can check out what it looks like here....

Oh man, World. You're a bit too late. With this generation, we don't even which wheels will work. I just hope it works out for you and that it'll be a long term investment for you, unless you plan to stick with last gen racing games for times to come.

oh rubbish, you NEED 60FPS for a racing game!
this is the perfect example of whats wrong with next gen games.
all developers care about is perty grfix!!!!!!!!!!!
screw how good the gameplay is, screw how good the story is, screw how well made and smoothly it runs, it just HAS to look ZOMFG!
and that is why as generations go on, we get more and more experienced, games are getting WORSE instead of BETTER!
with age comes wisdom my a$$!

Well, not that I was confident in this game anyway but now it's completely off my list, won't even bother with the free version. 30 frames per second in a racing game in 2014 is unacceptable.
