Newsflash: Destiny's Multiplayer Actually Must Be Unlocked

It's an interesting approach, but will multiplayer aficionados like it?

During a new Eurogamer interview, Bungie investment lead Tyson Green revealed that the multiplayer mode for Destiny won't be immediately available. You actually have to unlock it, which will require "a couple of hours" of solo play.

Once it's unlocked, however, all your characters can play online without any restrictions. Why is the developer doing this? Because Bungie wants to make sure characters have the necessary equipment and experience, so they don't die constantly on the online battlefield:

"We found early on that people here in the studio, when they jumped on the game--these were people who were already really familiar with the game mechanics--they would roll a new character, play through the first mission then go right into PvP, and they would just get really beaten up by the other players because they didn't have a super ability yet and they'd only got an auto rifle from the first mission."

You'll discover new weapons and equipment, and earn new abilities during the campaign that will carry over to multiplayer, so by the time you unlock multiplayer, you'll be better prepared. You will also have completed at least one campaign mission and gained a special weapon and super ability.

So, what do you think? Is this the best way to approach things from a development perspective?

I didn't know the game had a solo campaign... I thought the main story mode was connected with other players online... Though I admit I have not been following the game much.

I do approve of this, much like how heartbreaking it was to see people skip The Last of Us just to go online, why anyone would want to do that still baffles me.

I think it might be like, you need to play a few missions on your own to unlock a few abilities, etc. Didn't know there was a standalone campaign and don't think there is.

This is also the 1st I've heard that there's actually a single player mode too.

I'm not much into MP modes for most games, but the way Bungie says they're implementing it, IMO, really sounds good........and fair-based for all.

I disagree I think if people wanna skip single player and go straight for multiplayer where they can play with or competitively against other people let them, regardless it's a sale for whichever company is pushing out the game.

There hasn't been TOO much info on this game released so far, so the little info that has been released has been covered SOOOOO much that I can't believe you guys didn't know that.

YES, there is a single player campaign.

Most of the game CAN be played co-op, but as Bungie have repeatedly said you can play this game completely SOLO if you want. You will just miss out on some of the more fun stuff, like raids.

The single player missions are woven into the world, and you can play them at your own pace. This game will be always online, but it isn't co-op ONLY.

EDIT: They may not be completely separate, they are both in the same world, it is still a single player campaign. I would compare this game to what would happen if you combined GTA5 and GTA Online into the one game (mode).

Not really intersted in a game with a heavy MP focus so this hasn't really been a game ive been chomping at the bit for, but it seems odd this decision. Why not make the MP the campaign and have all players reach a certain level before higher levels of the MP can be accessed? Maybe they are hurt that there are people who played Halo and have never bothered with the story after the first. This shoehorn is almost as if they are saying "Hey we spent time crafting a story, characters, setting and music. You will take the time to experience it."

It's more like a heavy co-op focus.

Multiplayer is more like COD and Battlefield. This is played using close knit teams of 3. So is much more co-op focused.

I think it's a good idea. The first thing I did when playing Dust 514 was the stereotypical idiot newb move of throwing a grenade right at my friend. And as he died I ran from the scene of the crime hoping he hadn't seen my call sign. It was traumatic. </s>

This is a great idea. Gives everyone a chance to defend themselves. Once MP is unlocked it then comes down to skill. I really like how Defiance does their SP/MP split. There is no separate SP/MP game like CoD. In your options you just have to switch it over to MP if you want. Otherwise if you have it on SP no one can shoot you. I played SP 95% of the time. I really don't need PvP all the time or in every game. Doing missions with other players was SO FUN!!! I just don't need to kill other people. I have BF4 and KZSF for that. I was always hoping that Defiance would get a PS4 version but after reading it doesn't look like that will happen. It sounds like Destiny will give me what I have been starving for.

I feel the same way. That was why I loved Resistance 2 so much. The co-op was awesome. It's (was) at least nice to have that option of feeling like part of the game without getting owned constantly.

Some people, despite wanting to be, just aren't awesome at mp. And I'm one of them.

Stay Classy PSX...

This seems like a good idea for a few reasons. One of them being the forced appreciation of the SP campaign. But that's only justified if there is actually a good SP in the first place. I'm not expecting it be on par with TLoU or MGS but at least close enough to make winning case for the life of the dying SP.

On the other hand I would like to add that I always finish the story mode before jumping into anything online and I routinely get my ass kicked. So I'm wondering if this new idea would make it even worse for crappy players like me.

I read this with mixed feelings. On the one hand I have very little desire to play PvP multiplayer with this but on the other hand I am highly looking forward to playing with friends. Hopefully the required time will not be too long as some people that are more acclimated with the controls (Halo players) would probably have no trouble just jumping in. We'll see how they handle this but it's not THAT crazy an idea, just different.

The impression I have, is that you can start playing with your friends in co-op from day 1, however you want be able to join the PvP arena till you have leveled up a bit.

The interesting part of this information, is that the other day someone said that it will only take us a few hours to reach the level cap.

However, in this piece of info, it says that we won't be able to reach PvP until level 3, and he says "that may take a few hours".

I have heard that level 20 is the level cap, so if it takes a few hours to reach level 3, then it is going to take 20 hours or so to reach the level cap of 20.

I knew that the whole "only a few hours long" thing was total and utter BS!

exactly why i hate developers these days!
always putting a bandaid on the problem instead of fixing it.
instead of leveling the playingfield by locking entry till a certain level, thus eliminating the problem for starters, why not implement ranked matches so lvl 1s fight lvl 1s, and lvl 2s fight lvl 2s, and so on and so on?
that way the problem is fixed for everyone, not just lvl 3 people.
biggest reason why i dont play online games, when your up against a guy with a suped up HMG with heavy armour and your a little ant with no armour and a pistol, its not exactly a fair fight!
exactly why i quit GTA online went on, walked into a store to grab some ammo, came out boom some prick had put a plastic explosive down.
respawned, and some prick was chasing me trying to ram me off the road, and threw plastic explosive boom i was dead.
boom controller through TV, and i have not looked back.
so instead of just sweeping things under the rug, how about you pull your finger out, and oh i dunno, actually FIX IT!

I love this move. It will allow you to figure out how to play the game before it lets you jump in with people who have poured hours in already. Not only will it level the playing field ability and weapon wise, it will level the field by letting you figure out an ideal control scheme and develop your own strategies.

This is one of the games I'm really excited for this year. I hope it's everything it's hyped up to be!
