Ubisoft On Watch Dogs Delay: We Didn't Have Any Choice

When the Watch Dogs delay was announced last year, gamers were understandably annoyed.

But Ubisoft hasn't been shy about explaining and defending that delay. The latest to do so is marketing executive Tony Key, who told the[a]listdaily that while the move caused some financial trouble for the publisher, they really had no choice.

Key said it's "not an easy decision to make for any company" and it didn't help that Ubisoft's stock tumbled after the delay announcement. Still:

"We had no choice, despite the fact that it put us in a tough financial position in the short term. We're a long-term company, with a long-term vision, and Watch Dogs for us is a long-term play. We had no choice. We knew it was the right thing to do, but it doesn't make it hurt any less."

It was difficult because the game was running on new technology (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One), and the team didn't have any experience bringing it to market, as opposed to the long-running Assassin's Creed. Key said the AC team had experience; they found "that delicate balance of being able to put their heart and soul into the game and still make a schedule work." That wasn't the case for the new Watch Dogs brand, though.

The other problem was that the delay reveal came very late, which is uncommon. This is part of the reason Ubisoft suffered such tremendous backlash but in retrospect, these extra six months have helped drive pre-orders. Guess we'll have to wait and see how it performs out of the gate...

I know but besides the obvious similarities what does that have to do with watch dogs?

Watch Dogs is a true open world sandbox to play around in.
If they continue with a sequel they should be able to innovate.

Is English your second language? You don't seem to understand what I was asking.

It was the right decision over all to release a complete game otherwise the critics would kill it. Either way I still don't see a big franchise coming from this game.

What I love about WatchDogs is that it seems to be an open world that actually has depth, as in it has layers of interaction and things going on that will hopefully just make it an immersive world to be in.

So yeah, starting to get hyped for WatchDogs. Still going to wait for the review though ;)

Good Lord keep your hair on! lol I don't base all my purchases on what other people think of a product but I have found PSXextreme to be a very trustworthy measure of quality when it comes to videogames.

On top of that I believe Ben Dutka has always seemed to share a similar taste with myself for what he finds most appealing in many games (plot, character development, any old school rpg)

Lastly, and I can't stress this enough, I don't have an income that would support purchasing anything I want willy nilly so yeah... I shall wait for the review.

Peace. :P

Wait for a review? dont rely on reviews. Do you wait for someone to tell you that shoes are good to wear on your feet? exactly. Make your own decision. Wtf is wrong with people? "I'll wait till someone says its ok to play" is your logic or lack thereof.

Terrible analogy. You obviously don't even understand the purpose of a review.

And what the hell are you ranting about? What does any of this have to do with the article?

Actually, yeah. I do listen to what people have to say about a certain brand of shoe. I need to know what I'm buying will last. You'll forgive me for being wise with my money.

Avoid Fila walking shoes, after a week the back heel area wore off mine and exposed a hard sharp piece of metal.

While this guy seems to be suffering some sort of melt down, I do agree that people shouldn't base their decisions on other peoples opinions.

World, no one buys Fila shoes anymore.

the delay did not hurt them at all, it was the handling of the delay which hurt them.
ubisofts stock would not of fell so much if they announced the delay earlier, and actually continued to show off the game.
when a game gets a 7 month delay only weeks away from its due to go gold, then you hear and see nothing of said game for 6 or so months, thats what causes a few alarm bells to ring.
