Call Of Duty 2014 Unveiled On May 4, Story Trailer Released

Here we go again.

Activision has launched a teaser website for this year's new Call of Duty entry, which is currently in development at Sledgehammer Games. The game will be fully unveiled this Sunday, May 4, as evidenced by the countdown clock.

There's also a source code that reveals the first official image, which has since made the Internet rounds after being posted by Game Informer. There's also a pic that proclaims a "new era" in the franchise and in the background, that looks like San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

Then there's the video from Activision and Vice that provides us with more intel. It starts- "In the next Call of Duty, the world's most powerful military is not a country. It's a corporation. In the last 20 years, global combat has seen a steady shift towards the use of private military corporations, or PMCs. What happens when the highest bidder becomes the world's next superpower?"

See for yourself...you psyched?

I am not going to get my hopes up just yet, not till I see gameplay.

But I really like the direction in which they are taking this story. The whole PMC thing is something that hasn't really been used very much, MGS showed a world which was ran by PMC's, and now it seems Call of Duty is going to delve deeper into that world.

It really does sound like a cool idea for a story. It is good to see that they aren't backing down from having awesome single player sections in this game.

Could Sledgehammer do it? Could they REALLY create another COD4? A new era in COD games?

EDIT: The screenshot released today of the soldier in the exosuit had really good detail, MUCH MUCH better than COD Ghosts.

Another cod4 would be amazing, in all honesty no matter what the few butthurt people say, this is still one of the greatest best selling series there is.

I think it's just there for people who like reading stuff like Tom Clancy's novels etc. I'm sure a high percentage are there just for the shooting, but I wouldn't be surprised if decent number actually gobbles up these stories.

Good question. It's not as though they're actually going to try to make it anything more than setpiece after setpiece within a framework of American rah-rah patriotism. It's still a nice premise though.

I haven't read Mr. Clancy but I'd hope his work is better than Cods.

To equate Clancy's work to CoD is a huge insult to Clancy. Not even Tom Clancy games compare to his novels.

World, if you are ever curious enough to invest some time I would suggest starting with Without Remorse and jumping from there into Rainbow Six. His Jack Ryan material is great, but the Black Ops/vigilante nature of the aforementioned books sell his material. At least for me. After reading his material you will see there is absolutely no distinction between Clancy and CoD.

A more apt comparison for CoD "story" would be... for people that thought '80s action flicks were the pinnacle of storytelling. Of course... I'd choose the flicks over CoD.... ... .. .

The single player campaigns in COD have always been great. I have thoroughly enjoyed them all, after all isn't that why we play games? To enjoy them. If you start analyzing things THAT much, it becomes less of a hobby. You're just ruining it for yourself, relax!

Also, American patriotism? You know that most of the main characters in the Modern Warefare games were English guys right?

It was always more of an Allies vs Axis kind of thing happening, not American patriotism at all.

Actually, Akuma, I didn't know that most of the MW guys were English. I've only played Black Ops, and it certainly seemed to be about glorifying America through the implication that their actions kept the peace in the face of constant threats from other countries during the Cold War. But apparently, I'm mal-informed, so I'll shut up.

Oh really? Haha. I suppose I shouldn't assume that everyone has played every COD like me haha.

Well yeah, as far as American partiotism goes, the Black Ops games were probably the closest to that.

I played them up to the MW3 and stopped bothering (never bought any though). The stories are actually good FOR a war based video game that lasts 5 hours but since they are on par with a basic Hollywood action flick I tend not to put them up with the more amazing stories in gaming. Cod is just one of my favorite whipping boys.

Clancy is pretty good, the one book I've read. My dad's a big fan of many of his books, too. And he's not exactly a gun lover.

I actually really liked Modern Warfare 1 and 2.
After that point the formula felt so overly played out I lost interest. I'm ready, however, to have a next-gen representation of that formula. So now I can say I'm excited for some CoD again, even if it's time will be fleeting and relatively short lived before every subsequent entry will inevitably dull me to the new.

The bridge looks like the one from I, Robot...

I really don't get why Activision insists on unveiling CoD every year by focussing on the single-player. It's pretty much universally focussed that no-one really cares all that much about it. Then again, maybe they do it because they need to provide some kind of context to the MP revelations that will come later.

Wait... why do I even care?

I don't understand why all the COD haters even bother reading the news or commenting on COD articles. It's the same thing as trolling.

Also, people DO care about the single player.I mean, Activision aren't stupid, they aren't going to spend money on SP if no one plays it, so obviously the number of people who play it is enough to justify it's existence.

I read because I'm interested in all games, and even though I'm not a fan of CoD, I'm perfectly willing to be intrigued by the latest entry. If the leaked trailer of CoD: Advanced Warfare (dat name...) is real, the premise does indeed interest me, but I'll need to know that the campaign is more involving than it has been in the past (though aspects of the trailer don't inspire me to hope). If commenting on Activision's practice of revealing the SP of CoD first, even though it's the MP that many people are most interested in (more cautious language this time around), makes me a troll, then it's a badge that I'll wear.

I don't write the things I write to be inflammatory. I don't write them to rile people up. I do it to inspire other people to respond so that we can have a dialogue about our divergent opinions. You'll notice that I appear in a great many threads about games that don't interest me, but I usually do more than just disparage the game. I post why the game doesn't grab me, and indirectly ask questions about why it does grab others.

If that makes me a troll in your eyes, then... feel free to ignore me. :)
If not, reply, I enjoy seeing differing opinions.

Okay then, well I guess I can respect that. It just kinda reminds me of the console war threads, where Xbox fans would come into PS4 articles JUST to tell them the PS4 sucks.

But yeah, Destructoid and IGN both have the actual reveal trailer that was due to be shown this Sunday, it has some in-game elements with graphics that look pretty good, it is all captured on an Xbox One apparently. It looks pretty decent.

The further they get away from war and into bizarre futuristics and science fiction I think the quicker the franchise will die.

Yes I know it's still uber popular but we've seen the bottom drop out of things before.

COD: Black Ops 2 was the first futuristic COD in the series, and one of the best too?

There is no reason for the setting to make a difference, I doubt people play it for that. Don't forget that COD started out as a WW2 series.

It got popular once it went from WW2 to modern war. So I think they play it because it is a modern war game, once you slip into a different genre of expression (futurism) you lose mainstream fans.

Well i loved cod4 and mw2 both mp and singleplayer. However for me the formula became overused and samey. It annoyed me that they werent willing to change in game engine or give it a reboot in style. A next gen cod may hopefully have had enough change to make it exiting and fresh.

Im not sure about COD promoting just American chest thumping - given that the main MW characters were British SAS - Soap and Price - and the UK is CODs secondary stronghold.
