Sony: Dev Response To Project Morpheus Has Been "Incredible"

Developers are obviously excited about Project Morpheus.

The designer response to Sony's virtual reality initiative has been called "incredible." SCE Europe head of publisher and developer relations Agostino Simonetta spoke about the great reception at a recent panel attended by VRFocus.

Simonetta said the response is like nothing Sony has ever seen before with other peripherals and added:

"So from the guys that actually need to make this happen, the content creators, the response has been incredible. The challenges you have with some peripherals is that sometimes they work sometimes they donít, and the reason to work is because content is there and because they are interesting for the development community or just because they work. And sometimes we come out with peripherals that donít work and they tend to die then fade away. VR, the response from the community has been amazing. So thereís gonna be content there people for that are very keen. So itís been very promising."

Virtual reality could sweep the gaming world once Project Morpheus really gets going. Are you up for the VR ride, or would you rather stick to the 2D realm? Me, I don't have much of a choice because I know VR would give me a raging headache. Might be cool to see it in action for a few minutes, though...

I think it all comes down to price.

I have a weak stomach. My only fear is that this will give me the spins when I'm not using them.

The 3DS's 3D is just poor, think it makes everyone sick after a while. XD
I just hope places like BestBuy will have areas set up to try it out.

Sony is saying it won't release in 2014 but I have a gut feeling we very well may see Morpheus in Q1 2015 seeing as one of the first games to support it, Project Cars, is coming out for the PS4 late this Fall/early Winter.

I'm okay with it being on the market. I think it's good consumers will have an opportunity like this.

But for me, it's not that I'm not interested, it's more that I don't think I'll enjoy it all that much. Ill go back to playing normally.

This is really going to depend on the response of games that are available. They said the same thing about Move and developers loved it, unfortunately as good as it was there were no games being developed for it. I don't see this being any different honestly.

Sorry Sony but I simply can't believe you on this in the long run. I'm sure the response HAS been great but ultimately if they couldn't get hardly any support for a motion control which is easier to design for then it will be very difficult to get a lot of software out there for a peripheral that may cost between $600-$1000.

Like the PS Eye, I'd expect a few racers and specialty games to run on it and like Move a few B-level games.

I would expect a price tag of $299-$399.
They need to keep the price competitive with the Oculus.
If I can play every game on this thing with a controller I can see this getting a lot of use.

oh I thought Oculus was gonna cost a fortune. Even if you could play every game on it, it wouldn't make it work like living in 3D with every game, you'd just be torturing your eyes.

Either way I still think it'll only get a handful of software.

Having the opportunity to take home one of the Sony HMZ visors I am really excited to see what they can do with VR. Having a simulated screen almost the size of a movie theater with full 3D and surround sound is an ideal way for me to play games. I am hoping the morpheus will just be an expansion of the HMZ products.

The thing to remember is that Facebook bought all the VR patents used on Oculus Rift.

FB is not shy at all about suing anyone that gets in their way. If they feel that Sony is stealing their thunder, they might try and shoe-horn a lawsuit claiming that Sony is using some of their patents.

And in a scenario where Sony has to pay FB, that will affect the price of their VR device.

Sony's HMZ visors and its patents have been around way before they even started on the Oculus.

just a correction $onys HMZ series headsets are HMDs, head mounted displays, not VR devices.
they simulate a cinema screen in front of you at a certain distance so its like sitting at the back of a movie theater, except theres no motion tracking so when you move your head so does the whole screen.
i hope you have some good pain killers on standby, because my god are they uncomfortable!
no padding whatsoever around the nose area so its like putting a really tightly sprung peg on your nose like those black paper clips or something.
headaches galore!

Blankline, I want to believe you on the extra info you provided. I really do. Sounds interesting. But I can't. You're just full of crap far too often.

You're the boy who whined wolf...

I pretty much want this just for the sake of Gran Turismo. Cockpit view would take on a whole new meaning for me at that point. It'd be amazing.

I am so for VR and Project Morpheus! This is really exciting and I hope it soars into the stratosphere! PS4 and Morpheus are a match made in heaven. If this works and is supported the PS4 will beat the PS2 in sales! I am looking forward to getting one of those Virtuix Omnis! I could see myself dropping some major pounds with VR!

great!
so lets hope they have the confidence to pull out all the stops on this and make it the most advanced bit of tech they can, and not cheap out on it like they did with ps4 and vita!
come on $ony, a 2560x1600 low persistence OLED display, or dont bother just go home!
oh, and for the love of god, make sure theres a strap that goes over your head!
so f*cking stupid how they have designed the HMZ series HMDs, no overhead strap just 2 back ones so there is nothing holding the weight up, its all supported on your forehead pad and nose.
hense why after a half hour or so you feel like you have been lying down with a sumo wrestler on your face!
100% guaranteed way to get a splitting headache!
exactly why people call it the $ony HED, head explosion device!

Sony is definitely hitting all the right buttons (or most anyway.) I'd like to see Morpheus do good.

If you watch testimonies of people who have tried VR before the only time you really get motion sickness is when a low res screen is being used, which the Morpheus seemingly won't have, or if it is not set up properly which being tied to a console we shouldn't have much to worry about consoles are all about keeping things simple.

So hopefully even those prone to motion sickness will be able to use this without getting woozy.

Let the death knell ring loudly for the garbage that was the Oculus Rift.

I hated everything about the Oculus short of the concept.

The buyout by Facebook was the final nail in its coffin in my eyes.

I'm looking forward to it. One thing though... Is it going to restrict functionality to PS4, or can I plug it into a PC as well.

If I'm to buy into VR, I want to buy into one device to fit ALL my VR needs. I'll choose this over an Oculus Rift, if I can use it for PC gaming too.

What we need, is NOT a product... We need a FORMAT, a standardized VR format that allows competing products to be truly interchangeable, so we don't need one VR device for a PS4, and another for a PC and xBone. I'm not buying two. I'll buy the one that looks the most usable.
