Inquisition Writer: "It's A Pretty Stressful Time For Everyone"

Some games are big. Really big.

This means that developers need a lot of ideas before they can put together a living, breathing virtual world. And when they do, some proposed features must inevitably lose out.

As Dragon Age: Inquisition writer David Gaider said on his Tumblr page, this isn't an easy task for designers. For instance, concerning Inquisition, the game is approaching the Alpha stage, which is also known as "Content Complete." They're still creating more content but right now the goal is to make sure the current content is functioning properly. The team must also make some big cuts.

It's hard on everyone, says Gaider:

"This is a pretty stressful time for everyone. Every cut feels like it’s reducing the overall quality of the game, until there are so many of them you feel like you’re producing a piece of crap—until you remind yourself that every game goes through this, and the alternative is shipping late or not at all."

Gaider goes on to say that as much as fans may want to sympathize, they just can't understand. "They're usually oblivious to what's going on, harping on what color the sails should be while the hull is rapidly leaking water." That's probably true; as much as some gamers like to believe they know everything about the video game industry, many know very little about the actual process of making a game.

The hotly anticipated Dragon Age: Inquisition is scheduled to release on October 7 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

They just can't understand the trials we poor artists suffer. Woe, woe a thousand times woe!

This statement right here confirms The Witcher 3 as the better game. They were willing to delay it for the sake of quality. Imo. Granted CDPR doesnt really answer to a big publisher like Bioware does, I wouldn't be surprised if it'd be impossible to get a couple months of polish for Bioware.

All that said.. I'm not really too worried, this is just a part of the process, and it'll be a really good game, an important one too, the first big next gen rpg.

They shouldn't fuss too much, all that cut content will be polished up and returned to gamers as expensive DLC.

Of course, you'd have to put in micro transactions as well.

Agreeing to a constant online connection (totally not DRM) would be a good start.

Y'all are really cynical about this. I totally understand why, but these guys are a business enterprise as well as a creative one, which means if they don't ship, they don't get paid. The longer they go without putting something out, the harder it becomes to justify their existence to the higher-ups, so if they want to get paid and Bioware wants to remain Bioware, they need to prune their vision from its fullest potential.

It really is more about business than creativity.

And from a creative standpoint, sometimes it's for the better. You let imagine run wild and you're prone to wind up with something that is bloated and far less impactful than a streamlined version would be. Honestly, I wouldn't care all that much if they were cutting NPCs, additional weapon/armour sets, party members and environmental regions. It's all just extraneous fluff. However, I would be gutted to discover that they're cutting gameplay mechanics because... well, VERBS!

Take-two is a business as well but they'll give their elite teams such as Rockstar as much latitude as they need. GTA V was five years in the making but they weren't unduly pressured to hit an arbitrary date. Development can sometimes run too long but was Dragon Age 2 better for being shoved out the door in 18 months?

Then ship late damnit. Bioware, cut yourself from EA ASAP or you're gonna lose fans at this rate. I blame EA for all of this. Witcher 3 was delayed for the sake of quality. Why not do the same for DA, EA?
