Okay Sony, Now You Have To Respond With PS4 Exclusives

As just about everyone knows by now, Microsoft will release a Kinect-less Xbox One on June 9 for $399.

As far as I'm concerned, that should've been an option on launch day. Had this been the case, I'm sure Microsoft would have the next-gen console lead in North America, and the gap wouldn't be quite as large internationally. The problem was that consumers don't like being forced to purchase an accessory; in some ways, Kinect is more of a gimmick than anything else.

But now that Microsoft has finally done the right thing, and consumers can buy a PS4 and an Xbox One for the same price, it's time for Sony to respond. They won't drop the price of the PS4 yet, obviously, but they can impress everyone by doing what they always do: Excelling in the category of first-party exclusive software. Such titles not only set new quality bars for the industry, they also push the envelope in a variety of ways. PlayStation has always outstripped Xbox when it comes to exclusives, and Sony has to prove that they're still king.

So, at E3, they better wow the crowd. Sure, we'll see Uncharted 4, The Order: 1886, and probably a new God of War and The Dark Sorcerer. However, it would help if we had gameplay and dates for these games; even if we can't get all that information, we need at least some of it. Sony needs to prove that in a battle against the Xbox One, it's still a better idea to get the PS4. And with games like Sunset Overdrive (an Xbox One exclusive and a new IP) getting lots of press right now, Microsoft appears to have all the momentum.

The only way for Sony to steal it back? Games. It's what PlayStation does.

I am a little worried Sony might have lost the chance to really checkmate them. Games are needed right now to do that.

You want a checkmate? Then sony should introduce a 12gb harddrive less version for 329. The greatest advantage in ps4 hardware is the replaceable hd. All hardcore gamers will want this option to upgrade to 2 terabytes.

Asuno,
That's a great start, but how in the world is that a checkmate if the progress ends there? As for good AAA titles early in a console's lifespan, the PS brand doesn't exactly have the best track record of good quality year 1 (and sometimes year 2) list of exclusives.

I'm not saying they won't succeed, I'm saying they may be missing their opportunity to put XBO down. You know I'm right.

Godsman,
That would be excellent. I'd be getting one much sooner.

Why do you want a checkmate? If anything, this entire year long reversals by Microsoft has PROVEN healthy competition benefits the consumer.

Sony has been listening to what fans wanted from the get-go and Microsoft is now going to great lengths to right the wrongs of their console launch.

Seems like both companies will focus on the games now, specifically exclusives.

Everyone wins.

I could not disagree more about Microsoft being good for the industry.

The PS2 era, where Sony was dominant, was the best era for variety and quality (for what was possible at the time).

And then what happened? Sony got complacent and released a PS3 for $600 with not a strong initial software lineup. Forced to play catch up, they focused on pumping out quality first party titles and dropped the price.

Microsoft is in a somewhat similar situation at the start of this gen.

Despite what you think of the company, having a healthy competition between two console makers will always be a good thing for the industry.

So, by that epiphany of yours, they should make sure to allow competition to gain ground then? Yes... I'm sure that's exactly what they want to do as a for profit... allow the competition to take more market share...

Don't act like MS's launch was so much better. They released a defective POS that failed 30% of the time... they effectively destroyed the jrpg genre... they employed more than sketchy LIVE policies... offset costs for marketing, including hostile marketing, from other sections of the company allowing the XBOX brand as a standalone to remain in the red in order to make an attempt at monopolization... they paid for timed and DLC exclusives...

Yes... MS is -sooooo- good for the industry and consumer....

Both companies experienced issues with network hacking. Neither handled it ideally, imo, but of the two, Sony definitely had much better customer service.

I never said that they should allow MS to gain ground. At all. I was simply questioning why anyone (fanboys included) would want to see either console fail. I never understood that logic. I was simply stating that each company was in the lead at some point, and the other needed to make adjustments to their product and strategy to play catch up. You do that by winning over the consumer. And it usually means the consumer will benefit.

A perfect example of this was Microsoft having the perceived better online service last generation. Sony responds with Playstation Plus. An annual subscription service that essentially gives you free games as long as you remain a subscriber. This carries over to this generation (also becoming a requirement for online play) and becomes a clear advantage over Xbox Live, which offers no free games on Xbox One. Microsoft responds by beginning to offer free games as well. Now everyone gets free games!

Since Spencer took over the Xbox division at Microsoft , they have been doing and saying all the right things. Listening to fans, reversing unpopular policies, focusing on games. A lot of things you mentioned are over a decade old and the management that was in place (both at the corporate and Xbox level) are long gone from Microsoft. Time to let go of the hate...

I can see why you don't think these are polar opposite statements, but they are inconsistent.

You are saying it's better when they are more even AND saying they shouldn't allow MS to gain ground at all. I mean... are you suggesting the lead ratio they have now is ideal and they should aim to keep it exactly at that ratio? Because that is the only option left, now.

You're getting a little too caught up in trying to nitpick inconsistencies in my posts. And I'm speaking on behalf of the consumers, not either company. Obviously both MS and Sony want the biggest lead as possible while making the most money as possible.

My overall point was that as a customer wanting either console to flat out fail, or looking for one to "checkmate" the other is foolish. If the Xbox price drop increases sales and closes the gap, forcing Sony to drop the price as well, how is that bad? If MS offers free games to mimick Sony's PSPlus, encouraging Sony to offer even more freebie games or services, how is that bad? Companies fighting for our money is always a good thing. That's really my only point.

yah, as I just barely posted from a prior headline, the PS4 and XO now feel extremely similar. Very similar price and core tech. Very similar services. Very similar 3rd party support. It feels like it's all about what peripherals you'll want to connect and what exclusives you'll want to play.

Hopefully Sony doesn't disappoint with them exclusives come E3.

Similar but at the same price, the PS4 is still smaller with a more attractive design, no external power brick, more powerful, and a removable hard drive.

When comparing any consumer electronics at the same price point with such obvious pros over the other, it's still a no-brainer which one to get.

You ask a ridiculous question. Smart design decisions that benefit the consumer and add to their convenience ALWAYS matter.

And it seems short-sighted of MS's original online-only vision to include a NON-upgradeable HDD. Talk about retarded.

I know USB drives are supported but I don't want to have a goofy limb hanging off the XO in the form of an external hard drive to go along with the external power brick and oversized camera. They need to start thinking about the consumer and make things convenient for them. Don't expect me to clutter my nice, clean entertainment center with all sorts of stuff that the competition keeps internal to their box.

TL:DR. It matters

Release timing of the Kinectless SKU coincides with E3... Looks to me as though MS is planning to drop some stunners on their stage that will inspire people to pick up an XBO. And I'm keen for some competition.

I reckon Sony's best bet to mitigate it is to drop the price by $50 at E3. They'll take a hit, but not nearly as much as they did on the PS3 for its first two years considering the PS4 currently turns a profit for Sony off the console and a single game. And they'd better be prepped for whatever MS is showing at E3 with some big plans of their own.

The Order and Uncharted 4 are musts, as are showings from at least two other major projects, like Santa Monica's or Quantic Dream's. Whatever happens, I reckon that things are about to get very, very interesting for gamers in the very near future. Now I'm all excited for E3... Just when I'd convinced myself that I wouldn't be.

I think a price drop seems unlikely when Sony claims they're still having troubles meeting demand.
Also, seeing that both consoles cost roughly the same to produce neither party will want to take a hit for every console sold while they don't have to.

I say the best bet is to cultivate strong software and brand recognition of that software.

Yeah I thought this as well.

Some people think that Sony has positioned their conference strategically (8 hours after MS') so that they can change their presentation and respond to anything big Microsoft does. I dunno about that.

A $50 price cut would be a great way to undercut MS.

But now Sony can only win with exclusives, and at this point I am concerned that they don't have that anymore. They are going to run the risk of becoming the God of War or Uncharted console. They NEED new IP's.

Just read a news article today that said the PS4 had sold 7 million & a Microsoft official who stated that their Xbone sold 5.1 million, as of April 17th.

So sony's almost 2 mil up for the moment.

VGChartz has them at 7.5M and 4.5M respectively, while their week-to-week sales tracking for N/A shows a slight slant to the XBO I'm pretty sure since release. The margin is slim as though. Usually within 5000 units.

sometimes I think vgchartz is on crack. I'm pretty sure for March they had the XO beating out the PS4 on a week to week basis by their numbers, but then the NPD comes out and says PS4 is on top. Worse yet for febuary the numbers were looking somewhat close by VGchartz reckoning, then sure enough the NPD comes out and says the PS4 outsold the XO by a nearly 2:1 ratio.

I have no idea what to expect from late Thursday of next week for April's NPD numbers.

FYI, I already knew that M$ likes to give out shipped numbers instead of sold, but as I previously stated, that's what I read today from Reuters News Service(plus 2 others that have now been replaced with much newer, more important, news, like those 200+ Turkish coal miners who died when they were trapped in a coal mine explosion & fire....R.I.P).

Anyway, here's the part of the article in question, from Reuters.....

(BTW, one of the other articles did give the name of the M$ official who stated the MS "Sold" number).

Sales of the Xbox one console have lagged Sony's PS4 since their holiday launches. Microsoft Corp said last month it has sold over 5 million Xbox One video game consoles as of April 17. The console went on sale on Nov. 22 in 13 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, a week before Sony's PS4 which sold more than 7 million units as of April 6.

Though technically even sold wouldn't be inaccurate because retailers do purchase their stock.

I like reading the headlines, "Xbox One has huge price drop!" Umm no, you're just not paying for the part that requires you to yell at your tv any more. You know, the part you didn't want in the first place.

I don't really see this as that big a deal. Yes it's cheaper, but it doesn't do one of the things MS was trying to push so hardcore. Voice activated everything is now gone until you do spend that extra $100. Now 1/3 of the power of that xone is wasted on an operating system that you won't even be using.

Akuma,
The reason they went with Microsoft is because Microsoft was willing to let them keep the IP, while other publishers weren't. It's not about money, it's about ownership. And Sony has a tendency to retain IPs. R&C, Resistance, Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain, The Order, Heavenly Sword, Demon's Souls, White Knight Chronicles, Folklore, PaRappa -- All properties developed by independent/third party studios, yet owned by Sony.

With Sunset Overdrive, as with Fuse, Insomniac doesn't have to go to Microsoft, or EA, to see whether they're allowed to make a sequel or a spin-off and, simultaneously, those publishers aren't free to sanction the creation of low-quality spin-offs (Resistance: Burning Skies). It just makes sense.

Sony has nothing to be worried about, they placed soo much heavy emphasis on kinect, removing kinect made things worse for them. They need to basically make Xbox one more controller friendly now. There are also no worth while titles out at this moment. Price won't move Xbox one,all this did was turn it into a content, and exclusivity battle. They lost what made xbox one unique, even if its a gimmick sony has morpheus coming out soon.

Also I didnt know the Order was an exclusive. Seems like an interesting game and I like the time period.

Netflix and the like are not being the PS+ pay wall.

You don't need the PS+ membership to use apps like Netflix or Hulu.

You also don't need the PS+ membership to play Free2Play online games like Warframe. Or games that require a monthly membership already like Final Fantasy 14.

This is a race now that's for sure. Sony was running away with it. The PS4 is still the best console for exclusives, multiplats and F2P. I know Exclusives are a personal choice but I have always liked Sony's exclusives more. Sunset Overdrive does look like a lot of fun. Insomniac looks like they have found their groove again. Perhaps they will bring it to the PS4 later on down the road since they own the IP.

X1 couldn't outsell the PS4 with Titanfall packed in. Not sure lowering the price without Titanfall and Kinect is going to make that much of difference.

It's going to come down to games, games, games. Also, what can one console do that the other cannot. Morpheus could be a leg up for Sony as well. Sony just needs to stay the course and produce QUALITY exclusives not just in quantity. The Indies have been wonderful. However, everyone wants to see what the Sony owned studios are producing on the PS4. Uncharted and God of War 4 have to stellar and much better than their predecessors. E3 is going to have such a tale to tell!

I highly doubt we will see SO on the PS4, from the way Insomniac sounds that franchise is going to be Xbox exclusive. They openly chose to work with MS on that game, they were not forced in any way, and they even have a previous history with Sony. So openly choosing MS makes it seem very unlikely.

I keep saying it: I'm confident Sony has been purposefully quiet these last few months before they want to blow people away with an avalanche of great announcements at E3. Make no mistake, Sony is hardly resting on its laurels -- they haven't won anything yet! They are going to bring the hard hits in a few weeks, mark my words...

Even though the Xbox One will have the same price now as the ps4, the ps4 still has the edge because it has better hardware specs than the X1. If I'm new to video games and I would have to choose in buying ps4 or X1 and they have the same price, it's no brainer that I'll choose PS4 because it is a better system with more game exclusives.

bla bla bla Sony and xbone are both lacking in games there isn't going to be a checkmate for this reason Xbone controllers are very comfortable when playing a FPS game if you want to checkmate the Xbone kill off activision as a company that would be your first real start as COD is 1 of Xbones Major selling games

oh wait it's also one of Sonys major selling games so you would be hurting Sony at the same time so that's not an option

as for Sony they don't need to do anything except give the Vita more support
as for the PS4 they need third party JRPGS as the playstation was known for

when i think playstation i think suikoden wild arms FF Persona Tales of abyss destiny Star ocean then i also look at Spyro and crash as the playstation mascots but those were discontinued

lets look at why crash they went to racing games which didn't sit well
and spyro i honestly have no clue

but my point is alot of the games playstation 1 and 2 were known for was third party JRPGS
