Ubisoft On Watch Dogs: Grinding Not Needed To Succeed

Not everyone enjoys grinding. Heck, some don't even tolerate it.

But according to Ubisoft, you don't have to worry about that in the upcoming Watch Dogs. As creative director Jonathan Morin told Examiner, completing the game won't rely upon money.

And in fact, if you want the more powerful weapons and equipment, attaining them will be based more upon your ability as opposed to repeating the same process over and over.

Said Morin:

"The economy is heavily mapped into your progression. If you want certain items like buying more powerful guns are mapped to the requirement of having money to get them. Those are based on your ability to hack around, to do contracts on the side.

We wanted to make sure that there was this possibility of getting money in all sorts of different ways based on play style. It’s not a game where we necessarily want you to grind to earn money. That’s why if you run around, some players will profile for activities, some will run to a mission while profiling for a bank account."

Morin added that there are "other ways to acquire guns," and you can find some in certain missions. In general, the game won't be steering you in one direction nand forcing you to do something, which means different people will discover different parts of the game. And there's no "grinding" to speak of.

I never had a problem with grinding in the old days. But I know I'm in the minority.

That makes it sound like there's a heavier emphasis on guns than I thought there would be.

I was not opposed to grinding back in the day either, Ben. I remember very distinctly being strong enough to take on that stupid snake in FFVII outside of Midgar without the need of a chocobo in more than a few playthroughs just because I wanted to take him on early.

I also have to agree with Underdog up there, this makes the game sound as if it relies much more on gun play than I had previously been lead to believe.

After my first play I made it my lifes purpose to get strong enough to beat that damn snake. I thought it meant I'd be ahead of the curve for the whole game but boy did that strength edge vanish quickly!

Yeah, I wanted to get strong enough to beat him during one play-through as well.

But it was almost as satisfying to go back there when you're ridiculously powered and smash him in one blow. LOL

Grinding is good for some games but not really these sandbox ones so that's the right move.

YES! Oh thank goodness.... spending an hour just to get 100k in gtavo is beyond annoying. Thank you Ubisoft

one thing i really want to see in all games from now on.
upgrades and progression should be based on your skill and what you do, not how many times you have done something!
one thing i love about wolfenstein, you gain new abilities by doing certain things, not by repetitive crap to gain enough cash.
