PlayStation 4 Info: Gaikai, YouTube, And Social Networking

Sony should announce the PlayStation 4 in less than 48 hours, at which time all of this might just become official.

The latest round of information can be found at the Wall Street Journal, where they talk about the various features we'll find in the new PlayStation.

This includes Gaikai's cloud streaming service; Sony purchased Gaikai in July of last year for $380 million, and it seems this will allow PS3 games to be played on the PS4. This would obviously make a "broader array of titles available at the outset," according to sources. The PS4 is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs. In addition, the new machine will be more in tune with the various social services, such as allowing direct video upload to YouTube, which we have heard about before.

"The new PlayStation also will allow players to share achievements on social networks through smoother links to Facebook or Twitter, while also enabling aspects such as sharing footage of game play online through YouTube, people familiar with Sony’s plans said. Sony’s new console may also allow users to compete against others using different hardware, such as smartphones and other portable devices, those people said."

On the flip side, WSJ says Microsoft is taking a slightly different route. Rather than putting an emphasis on cloud gaming, the new Xbox will interact with mobile devices like Apple's iPad, and they're also planning to create new interactive TV content that will be played on the console. ...see, me, I just care about the games, but whatever.

Luckily this is just a part of the console. The only part of this social experience I even find attractive is being able to upload to youtube. The facebook and twitter thing is dumb. Heres why: I linked my facebook account with my PS3 and it was not only annoying to me to see all of those trophy updates, but think of how annoying it was for my family and friends. Theres nothing great about that, nothing. I have a lot of friends with PS3' and none of them use that feature now, it wont change next gen.

Time will tell I suppose, but gaming has or is becoming something I'm not interested in. I just want games and power. Thats it. Guess its a good thing I donthave to use those features.

I had a friend who actually linked their PSN w/Facebook and you're right. I was annoyed at seeing the trophy notifications all the time. I think he did too b/c he disabled it after a while. It's just pointless..

You know, you can't be all things to all people. A jack of all trades is a master of none. The PS4 is more and more sounding like an amalgam of social networking and gaming trends, casual gaming and mobile gaming all rolled into one thing. For some reason I think that SCEA has had a heavy hand in this console design, and personally the more these rumors continue to morph, the worse the thing sounds. If the PS4 is trying to satisfy all those different needs it will be targeted specifically at none of them which means that there will always be better products for the specific areas.

Agreed. I can't help but wonder where the idea came from that having all this social networking stuff was a good idea. If this is because of smartphones, I cant help but stress how different of a situation this is.

How does a secondary feature like social networking affect a console's design? Does the console becoming auotmatically weak if you integrate these social features? If say Sony makes a $250 console, then yeah that would be worry some. But we've heard that it'll be at least $400 dollars, and that it can run 4K video (don't know about 4K gaming) and probably a solid 60fps at 1080p no problem. It has more than triple the PS3's RAM with GDDR5, and the ability to record video simultaneously without a hitch? Sure it's all rumors, but so is this.

I don't understand why we can just look at these social features as an "add-on" rather than a "replacement" of high-end hardware to Sony's next gen console. Does having all this really hinder Sony from producing great games with a dedicated gaming machine?

Did the PS3 firmware updates that gave us Netflix, facebook, youtube, hulu, PS Home, etc. affect the PS3 as a machine? Did it prevent Sony from making good games?

Daus, secondary features are not the features that you lead with. Everything we are hearing right not points towards a plethora of social, mobile and casual gaming features, and precious little else has been discussed. I understand that this means there is a lot we don't know. But as I said, you don't lead with secondary features. It feels and sounds very much as if the next PlayStation is much more broadly focused than previous generations.

They'll probably just show off the DS4 and its share button thing.
If uncharted 4 is a launch title then say good bye to a 2013 ps4 launch,ND is releasing TLOU in june & there's no way they'll release 2 games in the same year !!

I think it sounds great..... There is a "No thanks i don't want that social thing" option though right? Cause if there is im turning that sh!t off as im updating the settings. If i wanted to be social ill go to the mall and chat with my friends. I don't want nor need this sharing system. However, i really do like this Gakai system. I used it all the time on my pc to play games like far cry and alan wake. If it does that for ps3 games then the peoples who are gung-ho over backwards compatibility should be at ease as gakai is very smooth with the games. I know, i use every now and again.

I've never tried gaikai. Was never lucky enough to join. I had onlive before the went belly up and it was ok. Hit or miss sometimes, the one thing I truly enjoyed from onlive was the option of watching people play online. That was awesome, just pop in and watch your friends do well or bad. I'm hoping this is an option on the ps4. That would be really awesome.

That's actually pretty cool in my eyes that Onlive could do that. I am wondering if Sony would use something like that for games or a feature of the system. And the ability to disable it if you don't want anyone watching.

Yea, you had the option of removing it. People could rate you at how well you were doing. I sometimes watched it to get tips on certain areas. If it is integrated into the ps4, it would be interesting. So come Wednesday everything will be known, hopefully. :)

I really like the video feature. If a decent editor is included this can make for some pretty awesome fan movies of crazy stunts and ideas.

Yup, I'm also wondering if you would be able to upload full length gameplay from it and be able to edit it, or just upload it raw to YouTube.

I'm going to be getting into YouTube doing commentaries, Walkthroughs, Guides, etc so this would be much use to me. Instead of buying a $100+ capture device IF that feature works for every game of course.

If it is true that the raw recording is 15 minutes long they have to include an editor, or it will be next to meaningless. You have to at least be able to trim the clip - preferably also cut out sections.

I don't ask nor expect loads of transitions and effects and all that stuff, just a basic editing tool.

I don't get why everybody seems to dislike the social media functions. I get a kick out of seeing which games my friends are playing and which trophies they've earned. It's also an opportunity to say, "Hey, what do you think of that game? Is it worth checking out?" I never found it to be an obtrusive feature. It happens once a day, IF I've earned trophies the previous day.

I guess to each his own.

people are against it because theres already so many other devices that offer these types of things.
for instance why does the ps3 need facebook when the PC, mobile phones, vita, tablets, notebooks, netbooks, 3DS, ect, ect already offer it?
instead of having 10 different devices that offer 10 different things, we have 10 devices offering the same thing.
its a waste.
the focus on next gen systems should be on doing things the ps3 cant do, and things nothing can do ATM.
thats why people dislike social features, because they are available on everything under the sun and its extremely wasteful.
those resources spent on bringing said functions to ps3 could of been used bringing a new cool feature, or game.
same goes for next gen systems.
instead of bringing new cool features to systems, manufactures are more interested in bringing features we already have been using for years.
the innovation?
well its on a different device.

They way I look at it, if you want to see what games your friends are playing or what trophies they have, then you go to your friends list on your PS3 or PS4. There are apps for mobile devices such as PS3 Trophies that you can see exactly what you'd like. The Facebook and Twitter features doesn't seem needed and didn't seem needed with the PS3 either...but like you said to each his own.

Meh, I don't buy it. I mean how do you really complain that your device does too much stuff? I could see if Facebook integration actually detracted from your gaming experience, but...it doesn't. I don't really buy the, "If they hadn't spent time on this, I could have something better." Hey, if my car didn't have a sunroof, maybe I could have had rocket boosters instead.
Social media is pretty much the center of the universe right now. I'm surprised condoms don't update my status every time I get laid. I'd be shocked if these things weren't part of the next PS. And, sure there are other ways to find out which games my friends are playing and which trophies they've earned, but this is integrated and automatic. It's a thousand times easier than going to my friends list, picking a profile, viewing trophies and trying to guess which ones are new.
I dunno, just seems like a lot of whining about nothing. I think people are afraid their precious Playstation will become the next Wii or something like that. You guys can have social media integration and still be "hardcore." Don't worry.

I don't think the complaint is that it does too much. I agree that adding Facebook wouldn't deter any additional features being added. If anything it's rather simple. It's just not needed.

I'm sure there are people such as yourself that like using Facebook to see what friends are playing and their recent trophies and the like. That's one aspect of social media. Then there are people such as myself who don't want their news feed full of trophy alerts/post. Where there are apps to do exactly what you state. And would rather use features such as the video chat on the PSN to talk with friends.

The only use I found kind of cool was giving people treasure via Facebook on Uncharted 3. People just don't want "too" much social media pushed into their gaming experience. As long as options exist all should be fine.

problem is facebook does not magically end up on the ps3.
$ony spends time and money working with facebook to get it working on the ps3.
server costs, man hours, wages, these things would be much better spent towards i dunno, this is a GAMES console so how about a GAME!?
not to mention with these social features, the recording the last 10 minutes of gameplay and uploading it.
so the ps4 would have some sort of DVR hardware, so that is driving the cost of the system up.
so in other words im paying for something id never use!
thats why people complain about it, because they are concerned its cutting into other things, same reason why people complain about SP only franchises getting MP.
and there also concerned its increasing the systems RRP.

really starting to get worried about next gen systems, every piece of info we get is leaning towards them being more nintendo systems rather than anything else!
come on $ony, you gained your spot into the industry by bringing the most advanced tech possible to the masses.
your not going to keep your spot by utilizing social and streaming services!
everyones interested in amazing tech because it leads to amazing games!
and everyones interested in playstation simply because the only other place is PC and its a little more expensive.
social and streaming though, some are not interested, and those who are already have 97865432457653789753423 devices already that let them do that side of things!

one thing i HATE, absolutely freaking LOATH about the world today!
companies dont give a sh*t about innovation, about pushing the human race forward.
all they care about is turning their device into every other device on the market!
hell Ford, one of the worlds largest car manufactures, turns up to CES a launchpad for innovation, to show off their new multimedia systems!

not to show off new amazing technology improving the way we drive, or the way cars are made, or the looks and materials used.
nothing interesting and beneficial to the human race, something that will turn their vehicles into mobile phones!
oh joy, thats what i really need!
i dont want a new way to drive my car, nor do i want it to look like its from the future, i just want it to be able to update my facebook account, and have voice recognition software that cant understand a blind side what im saying!
exactly what i hate about society, we use to be about innovation and uniqueness.
this is a car it drives you from place to place.
this is a phone you use it to contact people.
now its taking todays content and giving it features A are old and uninteresting, and B we really do not need!
put it this way, would you prefer the media systems and social activities, or would you prefer the next car ford produce to look like the concept cars there constantly teasing?

Dang! What is the big deal if they include some social gaming aspects? Don't use em if you don't want. I won't. Including things like this should not take away from the power or the true gamer aspects this machine should have. I'm not worried in the least. Younger gamers like this kind of thing. I have no reason to doubt Sony's ability to make the PS4 a true gamers console.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I don't understand how all this would automatically translates to, "Oh Sony has fallen and going all social like Nintendo" or whatever. If Sony wants to include social integration, then whatever. Them doing so doesn't mean they're going to ditch high-end gaming.

I'm more interested in the Gaikai. I've never used it and wonder how this will work. Such as would it be free with PS+? If not, if I already own the game do I have to pay to play it again(meaning Gaikai subscription)? Anybody use Gaikai?
