Sony: The PS4 Will Be Our "Biggest Network Driver"

The best way to push the network business?

Sell more PlayStation 4 units! That's what Sony CEO Kaz Hirai told Reuters, and it makes perfect logical sense.

Sony's hardware business isn't doing well when compared to the competition (Apple, Samsung, etc.), and the company just announced a $1.26 billion loss for the fiscal year. More losses are expected for the current year, as Sony continues to restructure. But in the meantime, they need to go after those install-base numbers. Said Hirai:

"We have to rigorously pursue install-base numbers. The biggest driver for our network business will be the PlayStation 4."

This includes the PlayStation Network as well as other music streaming and video download services. Another service is the upcoming PlayStation Now, which is set to roll out in North America this summer. As of now, Sony's network services have 52 million active users, "most of whom" are PlayStation owners, and Network business sales jumped 70 percent in the past fiscal year.

So yeah, might as well pursue the rosy part of the business, right?

I don't know man. Life could be a lot like the Fallout games for us by then........ and I think old guys are treated like disposable NPC's who get sold for parts or caught inbetween cross-fire of local gangs having it out. Or they're rummaging around for food rambling on about how life used to be back before the big fallout of '52. You probably wouldn't want to be around for that so careful what you wish for ;)

I'd be fully trained for a Fallout world, that'd be fun.

Well, I don't know about how bad it will be at 80, but........

.....having been without a job for the last 3 years, and totally exhausting my life's saving, I've now had to learn how to survive on only $80 a month for everything(except food & rent, thank goodness) & it sure sucks at 61 years old.

World,

Yeah, tell me about it, and after having to pay $67 out of it every month just for my car insurance, I'm left with $13 a month to decide if I either, buy toilet paper, a squirt-full of gasoline, or pay another 1/8th towards my increasingly overdue phone/internet bundle bill.

If they want to push even more PS4 sales they might want to put out some 9+ PS4 games at some point. Just sayin'

Does that mean that the only way to enjoy music and discless movies on PS4 is thru Sony's suscription services? No local support?

You know that's what I was thought and have been thinking ever since the PS4 has been released and why some features have not yet been included in the PS4's feature set. I'm not sure if they ever will either if Sony wants to push the digital mediums to be bought or rent from Sony only.

Was the PS3 not capable of importing/playing various formats audio, video and photos from it's release or were they added soon after? I know the PS3 is definitely capable now, and you'd think that hardware that's touted to be what, 3x or 4x more powerful, would certainly be capable of such things? I thought I read and/or heard the at least 3x or 4x more powerful thing somewhere.

I really want one, and while I do understand that this is primarily promoted as a gaming system, it's still a PlayStation and while the PS1 and PS2 didn't have an HDD bundled with the system they could at least play audio CDs, and the PS3 has implemented for more digital media features. The PS3 can also be used as a media server too if I understand correctly, whereas things can be streamed to and from it? The PS4 can at least play BD, DVDs, regular audio CDs and picture/data CDs/DVDs right? It would be nice though, for the people who don't subscribe to certain services to still be able to import or transfer many of the widely accepted formats for music, video and pics, without having to be a subscriber or buy/rent it from Sony's services. Anyway this is a little disappointing though if they will lock out any digital media that is not from a Sony service. :(
