Shadow Warrior Runs In 1080p On PS4, 900p On Xbox One

Hey, another game that performs better on the PlayStation 4.

You gotta think that Microsoft is getting tired of all these headlines.

But anyway, according to developer Flying Wild Hog, the upcoming Shadow Warrior reboot runs in 1080p HD on Sony's console, while it only manages 900p on the Xbox One. Both versions, however, will hit 60 frames per second according to a new Gamingbolt interview.

Lead engineering programmer Krzysztof Narkowicz said "it was very important to have 60FPS," which is why both iterations will hit that plateau. As for the stumbling blocks the team faced in getting the PS4 version to run at 1080p:

"Mainly CPU issues, as our engine didn't scale for more than 2-4 cores. This required a change of threading architecture and many parts of the engine needed a rewrite."

Shadow Warrior launched last year on PC, and is scheduled to hit the PS4 and Xbox One this summer. Regardless of the new $399 price tag for Microsoft's system, it still doesn't seem all that attractive when most every multiplatform game seems to be a bit better on the PS4. Just my two cents.

Fun fact: The xbox one's sales haven't picked up much since its price drop. MS is thinking about rebundling it now since taking it away didn't fo much for it.

I've heard about this game and how epicly ridiculous it is. Might have to pick it up.

The 399 version hasnt even reached store shelves and was announced two weeks ago. And the world's largest video game retailer has claimed that there is some renewed interest, though slight. Not much fact, but it was fun, I'll give you that.

I'm pretty sure their decision to drop kinect requirement also had a lot to do with the xbox one not being powerful enough so the reserved CPU power for kinect is now free game.

Yeah, it's hard to know the impact of announcements like that until quarterly reports and comparing the new trends with the old trends.

I would have actually expected the XB1 sales to have dropped since they made that announcement. Anyone that may have been considering one over the past two or so weeks probably decided to hold off and save $100 for the Kinectless version.

I f*cking loved that game back in the day. It was a Duke 3D clone that was even funnier.

This one isn't as funny as they tried to be more politically correct than the original. Still fun but the original is just more hilarious.

to add more fuel, Watch Dogs on PS4 runs at 900p where on XO it runs at 792p. Wolfenstein runs on the engine that powered Rage. The engine dynamically lowers resolution to keep frame rates solid. The XO version drops resolution a lot more often compared to the PS4.

This is the thing. This scenario isn't like the last gen. During the last gen the PS3 was always more powerful but the "exotica" hardware was difficult to grasp and few tools were available to optimize the hardware at the onset.

This time concerning the XO and PS4 it's totally different. They both have the same baseline architecture. True they each have their own SDK's for interfacing the hardware (something the XO apparantly has been lagging on) but the very nature of the tech is similar. The PS4 is simply more powerful in this regard. It really is more of an apples to apples comparison this go around. PS4 should have the multiplatform advantage with the lion's share of games from here on out.

yah. but I'm trying not to get too tied up in it. Gamers so married to res and frame rate advantages strike me as "here today, gone tomorrow" gamers. Meaning, once the tables turn, as they usually do, where one company has the performance edge, these pixel chasers all jump ship to support that platform.
I say it's better to be grounded in the actual content and services of a platform and not frame rates and resolution. Sure, it's always nice having it. But it's not the be all, end all as so many make it out to be.

Sure is nice to know the company you like to support put that little extra bit of effort into making the customer happy. Sony could have just gone with the same ram as MS.

Pixel Chasers. You may have created a new videogame title there. Should copyright that ASAP.

I also think we're at the dawn of a new kind of console generation. If I remember right, the XO (maybe the PS4 too I dont know) uses 3 different virtual machines to operate the console. Basically, the games are handled by one VM and the apps and other stuff is handled by the other two VM's. If these were designed right, we could be looking at hardware that's easily scalable, much like a smart phone or tablet. Where an upgraded, beefed up, version of the same platform could be released wihtout having to reset the platform standard. With SMALL effort on the devs part they could issue a patch that places any added horsepower into effect. The differences would come largely in stuff like frame rates and resolutions.
So I wouldn't feel too comfortable over the long haul. I wouldn't be surprised if there are upgraded XO models a few years down the road.

Excellent, this is one I didn't know existed. Loved the 3D Realms Shadow Warrior from 1997! Wow, with Wolfenstein The New Order, Shadow Warrior Reboot and DOOM 4 it's nostalgic party! All we need now is a proper Duke Nukem 3D 2 and a new Red Neck Rampage! Looking forward to this one.
