Homefront: The Revolution Announced, Coming In 2015
After THQ went down last year, Crytek purchased the rights to the Homefront franchise.
Now, Crytek and publisher Deep Silver have announced that the newest entry in the series will arrive in 2015. Homefront: The Revolution will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
The citizens of Philadelphia have been under the thumb of North Korean military forces for four long years. You lead a resistance movement utilizing guerrilla warfare tactics, and you must find a way to topple the "superior" North Korean army. Players can expect a single-player campaign and a four-player online co-op mode, but no traditional competitive multiplayer.
However, Crytek says The Revolution will offer "true open-world gameplay" and a "dynamic weather system" that produces full day/night cycles. Unsurprisingly, the project will use Crytek's own CryEngine. As designer Fasahat Salim told GameSpot:
"Everything you do, from throwing a brick at a KPA camera to assassinating a high-ranking KPA official, impacts the revolutionary state of the world. How you go about doing these things will also have an impact on the way people respond to you and your idea of a revolution, but either way the KPA will come down hard and try to oppress you as much as they can. Everything that happens in this world is part of a lot of powerful stuff we have going on under the hood."
The original Homefront really wasn't a bad game. In fact, it was quite good, and gave FPS fans a few dynamic twists they couldn't find anywhere else. Kaos Studios just didn't have the chops to pull off the ambitious vision; Crytek, on the other hand, could do quite well...
