Source: Sony "Unlikely" To Reveal Exact Date And Price For PS4
It seems Sony might not be laying all their cards on the table tomorrow.
Although it has become an accepted fact that Sony will announce the PlayStation 4 at a special PlayStation Meeting tomorrow evening, The Times reports that the company probably won't specify an exact launch date or price.
This is because they expect Sony to wait for Microsoft's new Xbox announcement before solidifying that information. Basically, Sony just wants to see what the competition will do before making any decisions. However, that being said, The Times does say the PS4 will be priced at "about £300," which translates to around $464. For the record, that's much cheaper than the PS3, which launched in the UK for £425. Many are anticipating a retail cost of around $500, and a Japanese source found evidence to support an approximate $499 price tag. And I say that's more than reasonable.
At this rate, it does seem inevitable that the PS4 will be significantly cheaper than the PS3 out of the gate. Given nearly seven years of inflation and better technology, does that concern anyone...?

Nope. The laptop I bought in 2011 costs less and is VASTLY more powerful than the laptop I bought in 2005.
In fact, it better not be $500 cause that's too much (unless that's a bundle that contains extra stuff; for base console + one controller, hell no) for me, and I suspect most other folks. $400 better be the initial price, or they'll hand victory to Nintendo again.

Personally, I think $500 would be sensible - it's likely a good balance between power and affordability. $400 would be a dash too cheap (it'll be a step up, but won't have staying power), $600 too niche.
It'll drop soon enough for those that don't want cutting edge - the thing with console cycles is that if they want to stay meaningful for the whole cycle, they need to launch relatively pricey.

I think it would catch everyone by surprise and put MS in a "oh crap, we've got to catch up" mode. I think the buzz from Sony pulling an unprecedented move like that by announcing and immediately releasing their new system would generate a lot of early sales as opposed to letting the hype train slow down for 6 months.

It'll be a matter of moments after the official specs get revealed that PC gamers start trash-talking the laptop-like specs and proclaiming victory over the next-gen.
basically, don't get your hopes up for anything hardware tech-wise to impress.

There are multiple sources claiming different things, I have also heard that the PS4 will boast current high-end PC power. We just have to wait and see.
It's funny, because consoles have always been behind PC's in power, but PC games never actually seem much better than console games.

exactly why i was tossing so much on building mine if i should go for the faster quad 3770K, or the slower hex 3930K , simply worried the extra cores wont be coded for properly.
we wont see any specific hardware details till E3 if that, they probably have not nailed it down yet firstly, and secondly they dont want to announce specs before M$ has announced their system.
plus, you gotta save a little meat for E3.
lets be honest, $ony have done a great job of marketing tomorrows event, but theres still not going to be as many people watching as E3 will have.
whatever big news is ready to be announced by then will be announced at E3, not tomorrow even if it is ready.
i wouldent be surprised if $ony walks in tomorrow and says heres the ps4, heres its new cool controller, these are some of the new features the system will have ie the rumored share feature, use mobiles to buy and send downloads, then some CG trailers of upcoming games.
ill be surprised if they give up too many details, especially since we dont know what the competitions doing.

I took a walk to Manhattan Center on lunch again and can see them setting up the site. Nice furniture.. lol. No one willing to talk and my connection has zero information. So they say. All we know it's that Sony has an event planned for tomorrow. No wonder I am not a private investigator.

At this stage I'm far more curious about new features and hardware than the price.
Like new PSN-stuff, new options and possibilities. Plus, of course, the hardware. Not only the box but the controller and any other peripheral they might show.
Dare I hope for... 3D glasses?

We'll see, but if it's $500 and it legitimately warrants a $500 tag, then you can count me in!

I had this feeling when I had the PS2 as well (because I was a somewhat late adopter with both consoles), but I still feel as though there is so much more to come for the PS3. The massive jump that was the PS2 to the PS3 was something that warranted a new generation; so many new and better ways of creating games were introduced. I held out for about a year before realising that simply, a PS3 would have the games I wanted.
With the supposed details of this new generation (because that's all they really are), I'm just not feeling it yet; my PS3 is the ultimate facility for the games I want.
But if Sony can sucker me in like they did the last time, I'll probably eat my words.

i was skeptical too, but after seeing all the history of playstation trailers, $ony wouldent show those unless they are announcing their replacement!
$ony have done some REALLY stupid stuff in the past, but not even those monkeys can be THAT stupid!
that wouldent even classify as shooting yourself in the foot, that would be shoving a nuke up your a$$ and detonating it!
they have put it into everyones head that the ps4 is announcing tomorrow, if its not they have royally f*cked themselves BIG TIME!

Mind you these are still just rumors below unless actually confirmed at tomorrow's PS meeting, but.....
Kotaku reports that their "source" states that the PS4 will have......
A fancy new user account system that will allow multiple people to log into one console at the same time,
You'll be able to control the PS4 remotely from your tablet/smartphone. You'll be able to use mobile devices to chat with your PS4 friends or buy games which are then automatically downloaded to your machine,
"Most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use. Sony's new online service will be called PlayStation World, replacing PS+.
Every PS4 will come with a PS Eye, that a new spectating feature will let you watch other friends play games from your console's dashboard, even when you don't own the game they're playing; and that the console will support local network play via Vita.

shock of the day!
looks like the times also have captain obvious working for them, gee he must be making a pretty penny these days!
pricing and release dates are the two LAST things you announce, you announce them a good few months after the products first shown.
not at the time its first shown!
if it was to release in june then fine announce the price now, but its not releasing till november and only in the US & JP, (typical $ony, giving EU das screwjob YET AGAIN!) so TGS will be the safest bet for release and pricing info.
if we see it before then ill be very shocked!

> Nintendo's "victory" only lasted a few years and in the end, the PS3 will likely surpass the Wii.
"Surpass the Wii" in terms of what? It can't be hardware sales, since I can't envision the PS3 selling roughly another 30 million* units. Software sales seems iffy too, since the PS3 is almost 200 million* units behind. Then again, that gap might be smaller due to under-reported PSN sales, so perhaps there's a chance there. Still, that's a mighty big deficit to overcome. They're behind Microsoft in software sales as well by about 100 million*.
And even if the PS3 does eventually surpass the Wii, it will do so at a completely irrelevant time, because the next console war will be in full effect at that point.
While it'll be good for Sony to finally be making pure profit on the PS3 at that point, their strategy of only making profit years into a console lifespan, due to releasing hardware that is very expensive up front, is too dangerous to use at this point when the world economy is still a mess and isn't likely to recover for some time. Sony's been good to me for some 16 years now and I want to see Sony survive, and if that means releasing less than premium hardware at a reasonable price that I can actually afford out the gate, then great.
I mean, the original PSX wasn't exactly a great bastion of premium hardware, was it? And if I remember correctly it was very easy to develop for. I don't know why Sony decided to go the "exotic expensive hardware that is very difficult to program for" route for the PS2's Emotion Engine and the PS3's Cell - it worked for the PS2 due to momentum coming off the PSX and due to lack of decent competition, but I'd say it (rightfully) bit them in the ass when they took it to the extreme with the PS3. Going back to a cheaper, easier to develop route for the PS4 (think like the original PSX, not the Wii-U) is definitely the smartest course of action, IMO. Now is not the time for envelop-pushing.
* - All sales data grudgingly taken from VGcharts and is therefore not official; why, oh why, is there nothing like Famtisu's sales available for worldwide stuff? *sigh*
