What's The One Game Sony Most Needs To Present At E3?

Sony's E3 2014 press conference is on Monday, and they really have to come with the games.

The question is this- What is the one title Sony needs to show?

My selection is probably unrealistic and definitely unconventional, but I have my reasons. While everyone is looking forward to checking out some incredible Uncharted gameplay, and rumors abound concerning a new God of War, I really think Sony would benefit most from a long-awaited presentation of The Last Guardian.

Firstly, it would be a top-tier exclusive for the PlayStation 4, and Sony's new flagship console needs such announcements. Secondly, given the many years we've waited on this particular IP, the mere mention of it at E3 would generate a roar of approval. Thirdly, we have to remember what Sony's bread-and-butter is; it's not just exclusives, it's exclusive software that pushes the envelope. The PlayStation library includes gems you can't find anywhere else, and two of those gems are undoubtedly ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

While I'd love nothing more than to see a SotC sequel on PS4, I'm fairly certain it'll never happen. But I'll happily settle for a new IP from the ICO and SotC creator. Guardian reinforces Sony's commitment to artistically fueled projects that are truly innovative, even revolutionary. This is the message Sony should deliver at E3 this year, especially because we're not seeing a ton of amazing new IPs for the PS4 just yet. We know about some exclusives but they're all part of established franchises.

Time to remind the world why PlayStation is such a respected name among core gamers.

Final Fantasy VII remake...

Other than that I really hope Project Beast aka Demons Souls 2 really blows people away if it is shown.

The Last Guardian would be a nice new IP, and I'm guessing Uncharted 4 will wow people. I'd love to get another Syphon Filter game but we'll have to wait and see on that.

I am in total agreement with you Ben. I enjoy PlayStation for the unique experiences it has given me all these years. Love me some God of War and Uncharted and they are necessary components of the industry but Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Flower, Journey and such are true escapes from the monotony. This is why I am primarily a PlayStation fan.

A Top Tier exclusive is what I expect from Sony and I am confident they will deliver. And is doesn't even have to be at E3. I actually want Sony to do something unexpected. Shake things up. I want a Brand New IP that no one ever saw coming. Something that screams next gen forward thinking not only from a technical perspective but on a unheard of level of story and engagement. I want to be awed.

1. The Last Guardian
2. Heavenly Sword II
3. God of War IV
4. Gravity Rush 2
5. Project Beast (Demon's Souls 2)

These 5 games are the most important to me. Uncharted is closest to my heart but I already know it will be there in some form. E3 is my most anticipated gaming event and I can't wait to watch it on the big screen.

That Guerilla Games open world rpg ffs!

We need more new IPs then sequels, but I could see just the announcement of a new GoW selling a million consoles.

TLG is more for the hardcore, if it somehow makes fall that would make so many existing PS4 owners super happy.

But we are going to see those bottom 2 regardless so it seems kind of pointless mentioning them.

I would think the article is about games, especially exclusive games, that we have little or no proof of existence but are sure to get people excited if they are officially announced.

The Last Guardian and Syphon Filter are quite a lot higher up the list than FF and MGS seeing as we saw both those games in the PS3 era and sequels have been confirmed for PS4 already.

FF Vs. XIII had a gameplay demo released in January of 2011. That's pretty "PS3" era if you ask me.

Also, how is it a PS sequel? We haven't had a Sony exclusive Final Fantasy game since Crisis Core. And only 5 of the 15 numbered FF's were/are exclusive to Sony.

Edit: Actually, I suppose Dirge of Cerberus was the most recent FF exclusive. Forgot about it. lol

The Last Guardian... I don't know... Isn't that from a Japanese developer...?
I know, I know. I sound like a %&ยค# racist now but it's really not that. It's based on pure observation, experience, I really don't expect the next big thing to come from those neck of the woods.
No, Sony relies on Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Media Molecule & co to deliver the big hitters. Dare I hope for MM to show off something totally fresh and new? Yes, I do dare.

Maybe they will present some exclusive DLC too. I mean, the tables are so incredibly turned now that I would not be surprised if Sony this generation do more of the stuff Microsoft became infamous for the last generation.
At the very least I think they will hammer the message that multiplats are best played on Sonys machine.

The only thing with Last Guardian is that despite the concern we should all be having with the length of time it's taking... is that Ueda has proven in the past to be pretty ingenious with the uniqueness and creativity in games like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

Even with the delays and apparent phantom game, it's hard not to be interested in hearing what he's been working on.

You don't sound racist. You sound like you don't know what you are talking about. Now, by your own admission, PS3 is your first foray into the console world, right? So, I can cut you some slack. I'll keep it short. Ueda and Team ICO are not just "a Japanese developer", despite them blowing out Yoshida's designation of the "Olympic Team", by going over their four year dev cycle. They are unique and creative visionaries. They created epic gaming moments in real time on the PS2 that 99 percent of devs still have to do in cheap, scripted scenes.No matter how long the wait, I have not even the tiniest doubt that Guardian will deliver on all fronts. As far as it being the next "big thing" it may not be a sales leader, but in the hearts and minds of the fans, it will be a leader in everything else. And don't discount the rest of Japan. A few gifs of Project Beast set the net on fire and that was straight from the Land of the Rising Sun.

It's true that the PS3 was my first console, I never paid much attention to this side of gaming before then. So yeah, you might say my vision is not distorted by fond memories of a long lost past. :p

I'm sorry KidPresentable, but I've far too often heard claims from oldtime console gamers describing various Japanese developers as "unique and creative visionaries" to really put much trust in those words.

These opinions are clearly based on what these guys did like TEN, FIFTEEN years ago - that's an eternity and a half in the computing world. What I've seen during my console years have been anything but unique and creative, and far from "visionary"; shallow concepts, cheap content, bad writing and sub-par technical solutions.

Now, there's nothing I'd love more than to be proven wrong here - after all, who would mind a new great game? - but tales about what these guys did at the beginning of the century is really not going to impress me much. Not anymore.

Nier wasn't unique and creative? Ni No Kuni wasn't unique and creative? Super Mario Galaxy was unique and creative? Xenoblade wasn't unique and creative? Vanquish wasn't unique and creative? Yakuza 3 and 4 werent unique and creative? Wonderful 101 wasn't unique and creative? Dragon's Dogma wasnt unique and creative? Pikmin 3 wasn't unique and creative? Bayonetta wasn't unique and creative? Demon's Souls and Dark Souls arent unique and creative? Catherine wasn't unique and creative? Valkyria Chronicles wasn't ynique and creative? Folklore wasn't unique and creative? El Shaddai; Ascension of the Metatron wasn't unique and creative? Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 wasn't unique and creative? Zero's Last Reward wasnt unique and creative? Mario and Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story wasnt unique and creative? Metal Gear Solid 4 wasn't unique and creative? Dead Rising wasn't unique and creative? Kid Icarus: Uprising wasn't unique and creative? Gravity Rush wasn't unique and creative? Zack and Wiki wasn't unique and creative? Ghost Trick; Phantom Detective wasnt unique and creative? LoZ: A Link Between Worlds wasn't unique and creative? Disgaea 4 wasn't unique and creative? Little King's Story wasn't unique and creative? Yeah, I hear you.

Here's the thing: This wasn't a Metacritic, Wikipedia, or Google search. This are real games from my collection. Hell, that isn't even close to all the Japanese games I have from the last gen. I left out most RPGs, fighters, Project Diva etc etc. This isnt old gamer talking, just plain gamer. A lot of the new people talk more than play and follow more than take a chance. I'm arrogant sometimes, but that's only bad if i didnt have the collection or knowledge to back up what I say.

Not all of Japan has huge budgets so there won't be a deluge of graphical beasts coming from there, but to claim Japan is devoid of uniqueness and creativity is ignorance of the highest order.

@Underdog,
I know, me too! If there is an opening in the form of a free test period I'll be *all* over it!

@Kid,
hehe alright... If you really think that a majority - or even just a handful - of the games you list there would make serious waves in the context we talk about here - E3 - well then I'll just shrug my shoulders and let you be of that opinion.

But I do of course not claim that all Japanese games are completely devoid of any sign of originality. That's ridiculous. If that is what you manage to squeeze out of my posts then you do so because you want to.

All games has *some* originality. By far most games released today have *some* qualities. And a lot of them can be fun too.

But even if I don't own a majority of the games you list, it doesn't mean I don't know them. I read reviews. I watch trailers. I keep myself reasonably updated. There is a *reason* why I never bought most of them myself.

And sorry, but except for MGS4 (back when it was released) I don't see any Sony E3 Showstoppers in that list.

Yeah, all there is now, Beam, is a free 30 days when you buy. I've seen it on Steam for $9.99. I'm sure in time it'll go on sale at some point for even cheaper, like $4.99 or so. If it ever does, that's pretty cheap and inexpensive to try out a game you've been curious about.

I'd recommend you try it then, even though it isn't 100% free.

Just for the record, Beamboom, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are two of the most revered and respected games ever, and they DO stand up very well over time.

These are not like JRPGs, which have suffered and withered over time (due to lacking resources and effort on the part of developers, it seems). These two games from Team ICO are examples of pure artistry in gaming, akin to something like Journey, although deeper and more like AAA productions.

You should really look into the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection.

@Ben,
I knew they were not jrpgs - but it's also true that I've not played them. Maybe I should.
I am not talking specifically about jrpgs here, but also games like Lollipop Chainsaw, Bayonetta, Vanquish & co. Or for that matter, my favourite Japanese IP of all time, Katamari. Wonderful concept but riddled with technical issues and just plain primitive code.

My point is just, it's so long since we saw anything truly epic from Japan now that I no longer put much trust into what they did 15 years ago - regardless of how good they were then.

It's like you too have said in many reviews now Ben, in regards to technical issues (ref camera issues, audio issues, framerate issues, collusion detection issues, and so forth), writing and overall state of the games... It's just not where it should be.

@Underdog;
You are right, and heres a promise: When we find it at around $5 I *will* buy it and give it a months test run (at the very least).
I look forward to it!

You're right, the technicals are not where they should be on the technical side.

But when it comes to ICO and SotC, there's little to complain about. It's impossible to explain unless you see them yourself. The only thing to remember is that the character in SotC is supposed to be a little clumsy, as he's not a superhero. The focus is on taking down massive creatures as a relatively normal dude with a sword, which is why it's part puzzle, part adventure. ICO is an action/adventure with a teammate angle.

And what's wrong with Vanquish? That's one Japanese game that was technically rock solid and even impressive. Bayonetta wasn't riddled with issues, either.

Twisted Metal Redux- TM1 & TM2 combined into one neat package (not two separate games on one disc) with complete WORKING online play modes (not that crap from the last one). Mash it into one long story (episode 1 and episode 2) and release it at $50 or even pack it into the PS4/PSV pack (with Cross-play/Cross-Save functionality). E3 will be won there on the spot.

I think Uncharted 4 is a given, but that has pretty much been confirmed.

For me personally it would be the announcement that Final Fantasy XV was still a PS4 exclusive. That would be huge news and the sore reason for me picking a PS4 over the XBOX. However, after hearing Sony dropping their S-E shares, I really am in doubt.

Other than that I am not sure, I know there is going to be a Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain trailer - Which utterly blew me away last year so I just cannot wait to see what this year will bring.
