E3 2014: PlayStation TV Heads West This Fall, Costs $99

When it originally debuted in Japan, Sony wouldn't confirm it for Western territories.

But as announced at their E3 press conference, PlayStation TV is now headed to North America, Europe and the PAL region this fall. It will come in the standard black color (as opposed to the white we've been seeing since it was unveiled), and the retail price will be $99 for the standalone system.

To further entice consumers, Sony will release a special bundle in North America: This will feature The LEGO Movie Videogame, a DualShock 3 controller, an 8GB memory card, and PSTV for $139.99. PlayStation TV is little, coming in at only 6.5cm x 10.5cm, which makes it the smallest of all PlayStation consoles, and it supports Remote Play, wireless controllers for the PS3 and PS4, and even the upcoming streaming service, PlayStation Now.

The idea is that you can play any number of games in the PlayStation library with this little unit. When hooked up to your TV, you can play everything from the oldest PS classics to the latest and greatest. Obviously, it operates via streaming and not physical software, although it can play Vita cartridges. Flexibility and ease of use is a big trend these days, yes?

Pretty cool. Curious about the "TV" part of the name. I was thinking it might have TV services? Don't care really just an observation. I'm probably over thinking it's simplistic approach.

You will be able to use the Hulu plus, Netflix, and crackle apps so I guess the TV part of the name can be justified there.

In theory it sounds phenomenal. I guess this would be great if you're traveling and you want to play some games at a family's house or hotel (if you're not busy getting busy).

The price point for the standalone device is just right. We'll see how this plays out.

Seems so, except he said that "select" vita games will play. That means not all, but hopefully at least most.

I don't get it, what is the point of this device?? Especially if you already own a PS3/PS4?

Or is this Sony's way to try to get PS Now in every home??

It functions as a PS3/PS4 in rooms that don't have a PS3/PS4.

Using what? PS Now streaming to play the games?
Because it doesn't sound like there's any real PS3/4 console hardware in the unit that can play the games by itself...

@LimitedVertigo - I think you need to clarify what "It functions as a PS3/PS4 in rooms that don't have a PS3/PS4" means.

The PS TV actually is a Vita and uses the same OS. It's not a PS4 and it will not provide the same performance as a PS4.

I think this device might confuse people. I mean it already confuses people who consider themselves core gamers. Regular people will go "If this is like having a PS4, then why should we spend more than $99 to buy a PS4?".

Completely agree Bonampak... sounds like a very confusing device that will take a lot of information by Sony to explain what it is and what it's for.

And well that doesn't really sound like something Sony needs right now, another niche device that will take a lot of effort and finally may just fade away into nowhere...

This thing looks pretty good. It'd be nice to be able to hook it up to my bedroom TV (for example) and play PS3/4 games on it without having to lug said consoles into another room.
