Here's Why We Didn't See The Last Guardian At E3

While many were hoping to see The Last Guardian during Sony's E3 press conference, it didn't happen.

Why? It's quite simply not ready. Head of PlayStation software product development Scott Rohde told GameSpot that while the past week has been entertaining (referring to the cancellation rumors), Sony still needs to insure the "creative process:"

"It was a fun week of Last Guardian news. At PlayStation, it's really important to us to make sure that the creative process works. And in this case, [game director Fumito Ueda] has created something that's great, it's just going to need some time. We'll show it when it's ready."

After being announced back in 2009 as a PS3 exclusive, most are assuming that Guardian is now in development as a PS4 exclusive. Rohde wouldn't confirm that, though, as he's obviously only interested in telling everyone that the game isn't canceled. That's nice and all but after so many years, I think we deserve something, don't you?

Maybe they're saving it for the Tokyo Game Show in September, or something...

Seems to me they should not have shown it 5 years ago. When you announce a game, maybe you should make sure it's going to be available in a reasonable amount of time.

The problem is everyone keeps getting their hopes up. The game was announced last gen and there was even a trailer. Since then, nothing. It's seen some trouble and its best we understand that and let it play out. Comments like it possibly showing up at Tokyo Game show for instance don't help that case.

I just hope whenever it does release it doesn't come in the form of a $15 PSN download title that could be over and done with in as little as 3 hours.

Thank the gods for No mans sky
Otherwise the lack of TLG and uncharted 4 gameplay would of killed the overall experience for me.

…and here's why Devil's Third wasn't shown. It's now a Wii U exclusive. I just caught a part of the interview at IGN with Itagaki. When asked why they moved to the Wii U he claimed it was because Nintendo understood their vision and what they wanted from Devil's Third so they had to be with them…. haha. whatever how about this reason. the real reason. we've taken so dang long on the Devil's Third our very old looking game and engine tech is too outdated for PS4 or XO and we don't have the money or the man power to take it to that level. We need to just go with Wii U where we hope to capture a nitch subset of Wii gamers who happen to want this because we can't scale ourselves to the PS4 or XO.

Well, that, the marios, mario kart, bayonetta 2, and now devil's 3rd, throw in a zelda or two, Xenogears, that's quite the party at the graveyard. I think I'll pick up a Wii U if I'm lucky enough to find one of those erroneously mispriced $99 bundles that go advertised every now and then.

I'm impressed by the new Zelda, Xenogears, and Bayonetta games. I'm sold on a Wii U. It's a question of when though. A big contributor to this, however, is having a family to take part in it's entertainment offering. If I make a list of games we'd like to play on the system it's a pretty robust one. More robust than what we could get from the PS4 alone right now.

EDIT: I think Devil's Third looks like crap. The single player protagonist is a turn off too. Sorry, Vin Diesel was cool for Riddick but that was about it.

Xeno and Zelda don't cone out til next year so it is not robust at the moment.Zelda is the only interesting game on the list anyway.Nothing else will succeed, but Bayo looks good design wise.PS4 will have more games total by nect year and has better this fall.

I'm committed to getting a Wii U sometime next year. So by then the pool of titles should be nice.

Hopefully Nintendo has learned that for a platform that thrives on their first party efforts it needs to be plum full of quality games right from the get go, rather than years later. Aside from the price, the Wii U has largely suffered due to the lack of Nintendo's own support.

@DarthNemesis - Dude, Polygon had to eat crow when they said that Mario Kart 8 wouldn't break the 1.2 million mark in the Wii U's entire life cycle. They even published pie charts backing up their claim.

And yet the game sold over 1.2 million units in 3 days. 3 days.

Besides you're forgetting a pretty big title for Wii U That will also come out this year: Super Smash Bros. That one will be a million seller guaranteed this x-mas season.

Another game that might sell well is Hyrule Warriors. Thanks to the fact that it's going to be a lot more than just Dynasty Warriors game with Zelda skins. It will actually have a plotline and it might be canon. So Zelda fans will gravitate to it.

@Temjin001 - I agree that the game looks like crap. And that the only reason why it ended on Wii U, was because they didn't have a budget to make it a current gen title.

But I think the agreement that they reached with Nintendo, was to release the game without any sort of censorship from them.

Fingers crossed for TGS, I guess. Which makes sense... good platform for announcing Japanese games should be in Japan, one would think.

I was sort of echoing what you said. Heavenly Sword 2 would be good. I'd also like something like Valkyria Chronicles to satisfy the GOOD anime bug. (Not really wanting more of the cutesy anime anymore) Perhaps another Ni No Kuni.

All the stuff I would get excited about no one seems to talk about anymore. Probably my age showing or something.

If I started thinking about it I could probably be bummed out from some no shows or no announcements. It's just that what was shown looked so very good it's hard for me to not be impressed by it all. It just looks like a lot of incredible stuff is coming our way, whether I asked for it or not.

Certainly, what was shown looked good. I'm all for that Uncharted 4 thing. Bloodborne or whatever looked good, but I'm not sure I feel like another really tough souls game. I really liked the others, but I never finished any of them. Just lost interest. It's not that I stopped progressing, either... just felt like I should have been done by now, and had other things to move on to.

I was also excited to hear what I did about LBP3. In fact, that's probably my highlight. But overall, most things were just neat to see, but not much that makes me need anything day 1. Certainly nothing that makes me feel like I need a PS4. I'm still waiting for that must have feeling.

Well, why would they be ready to show it, after all they've only had the past 10 years or so to work on it... maybe if we give them another 5? Or make that 10.... and they'll be ready to announce a release date sometime in the future...

I'm always amazed how many people seem to give a crap about a quasi-sequel to a poor selling game that came out a decade ago.
