The Last Of Us: Remastered: A Remaster Done Exactly Right

I love Naughty Dog. And I have legitimate reasons for doing so.

First of all, I don't have a problem with high-definition upgrades and remasters and all that. If you don't want the upgraded version, don't buy it. If you're annoyed that you purchased an "inferior" version a year earlier, get over it. Nobody is trying to cheat you; this is the way the industry works.

However, when I hear the word "remaster," I have certain expectations. I don't expect a simple graphical overhaul; I expect a full-blown upgrade. I expect the product to be better in just about every conceivable way.

For example, if the original game had a few quirks and bugs, clean 'em up. There's no excuse for leaving them in a "remastered" version. If there's a chance to achieve better technical performance, you had best take that chance. If you look at The Last Of Us: Remastered, Naughty Dog is really working hard to deliver a fully updated experience (check out the latest encouraging info).

TLoU was already fantastic. But everything can improve and if there's one team out there that can improve on their own products, it's Naughty Dog. They're striving for 60 FPS, they're looking to fix lingering bugs; in short, they're really trying to produce the definitive version of an already unbelievable experience. Now, I'm not saying the developer deserves some sort of special reward; I'm merely saying this is what they're supposed to do, and what all developers should do if they're "remastering" a game.

I've seen speculation elsewhere that one of the reasons that they're doing it is to reach the millions of PS4 owners who didn't have a PS3. In that context, it makes a lot of sense to reach out to people who might have heard great things about the game but didn't have the means to play it before.

Ummm yeah. They do want people to play their games. It's one of the best games ever made, why not get it into other consumers hands?

I see it in comparison to Tomb Raider which was well-received, sold pretty well and was available on 360 and PS3 but STILL somehow needed to be ported to current gen. Square Enix wasn't trying to reach millions of potential customers who had missed out; they just didn't think that 3.5 million copies was enough and wanted to take another bite at the $60 apple.

I've talked to quite a few new Playstation fans that are excited to be able to play it.

Already played it so I won't be buying again as there are actually a few more decent games lined up for the fall than I expected but yeah, I'd say anybody who's new to PlayStation should definitely be excited for this. Could argue it was the best PS3 game. Uncharted 2 was also fantastic but there was just something about TLoU.

Yeah, this is why I didn't even think about investing in the remastered Tomb Raider. While no one will disagree it certainly was "upgraded", I just don't see the point in re - releasing a game unless it was developed to take advantage of the new generation and get into the consumers hands in the best playable way.

I'd say Tomb Raider took advantage of PS4 pretty good. Can't imagine going back to the PS3 version.

The only reason I picked up the new version is because I missed the original on PS3 and figured what the heck. I really like it but if I had bought the original version I'm not sure that I would have gotten the upgraded one.

Actually it says they wanna go PAST 60fps! But anywho.

This is actually why I did buy the Definitive Tomb Raider. They did the same kind of extra work. Making it 60fps alone created a smoother experience. New object and environment physics, new Lara model, Textures jacked up to 4k resolution. The refined levels, better lighting technique, and even the more realistic wind. They all made for a pretty big leap.

Seems like ND is doing the same kind of overhaul.

This is a waste of a game if you already have played it. It is so last gen. YOu have to be an idiot to pay full price for this again.

Seeing you here reminds me of another long list of things that might make a person an "idiot".

I just watched some video for the two. I can see how bloodborne could be compared to darksiders 2. I'm sure they're different, but it's not hard to see similarities in style and action.

Someone tell them they need to include at least 5 minutes gameplay of uncharted 4. It would be cool to see whether on the disc or a dlc code.

I think bringing last gen games to the current gen should be considered remastered in its own right. I mean, its not like they're just going to copy the code and paste it somewhere else. This isn't just some automated "PS3 to PS4 conversion.exe".

I cannot justify buying this day one at full price, but I will certainly invest in this in the future say late 2015 when it is down in price. One benefit being that I have yet to play the Left Behind DLC, which I won't buy on PS3 even at a sale, I'll just wait until this drops now. I haven't really seen much in the way of comparisons. I would love to see the improvements, I value the 1080p/60fps but I haven't seen any direct comparison to the PS3 version.
