Destiny Alpha Extended For The Sake Of "Dangerous Experiments"

Whelp, still playing the Destiny alpha.

That may not sound newsworthy, but bear in mind that the closed test was supposed to end at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET this morning...and yet, testers can still log in and play.

On top of which, developer Bungie tossed up an interesting (and somewhat frightening) Tweet:

"There's a rumor that the Destiny alpha might be extended to allow dangerous experiments. Play beyond the official close at your own risk!"

Now, I have no idea what they're talking about; maybe I'll find out when I return to playing in a bit. I only just noticed that I could still log in earlier this morning; Bungie must be looking to test something that might take our collective breaths away... But anyway, if you didn't get into the alpha, don't fret, because the beta test is only a month off.

Beta testers can start rolling on July 17.

Curious about people's thoughts on this game so far. I know it wouldn't have nearly all the content the final product will, but still interested in it's roots.

I like it!
But I feel I'm a special case and may have adoration for it that others here probably won't feel. I loved Halo but felt the series was overdue for a big overhaul as the formulaic approach to it's campaign was stagnating. I'm also not a regular of MMO's. So to have something that feels like Halo but reembodied in an MMO'ish universe is really compelling. The art execution is really slick and the visuals are polished. It's getting my money!
Most importantly, it feels like an experience I haven't had before.

I think I read Ben has a hands-on preview coming soon.

I feel pretty much the same way, Temjin, although I have to admit it feels just as much like Borderlands as it does like Halo.

I'm a little more critical. It is fun and everything runs very smoothly with solid animations and stable graphics. I felt more like it is Halo meets Rage. As far as the gameplay goes it's old fashioned and samey, there isn't even a cover mechanic. The graphics are mid level PS3 quality, the art is unoriginal and uninspired, nothing special really. Missions are to go here, then go there, then beat a spider tank, you get some predictable weaponry. Basically it is all very generic, but still a lot of fun anyway. There is an addictive element, I like to kill and then do a dance almost like being in PS Home.

I wouldn't buy it based on this alpha.

World you need to get your eyes checked if you think this game has mid-level PS3 graphics. The lighting system alone would make the PS3 burst into flames, though admittedly the lighting is the only graphical element that is done really well and sadly seems to only be well done in some areas. But that aside this game may not look amazing but it still looks really good for a crossgen "open" world game.

If you want to see how good this game can look go into explore mode then head to The Divide it is the area that has the Walker Tank alert then from there upon entering take an immediate left past an area that spawns a large number of Vandals and you can head into a passage that brings you to The Cosmodome, the area with the broken bridge and a bunch of rusted cars. The lighting in some areas of that passageway is absolutely phenomenal.

Shauneepeak, I really like how far the draw distance goes without seeing a bunch of stuff growing 20 meters in front of you. Similarly the draw distance on enemy visibility is possibly the best I've seen. You can spot dudes from a long way away. 1080p actually helps a lot in that sense I think.

I do think the indoor lighting is a bit dated. That is, the flashlight effect and ambient lighting at times can seem flat in corridor settings. However, the outdoor stuff looks fantastic.
I know not to take anything too literal though. This is an ALPHA. Bungie has stated time and time again that this is just a small slice of the full offering.

The lighting is by far the best part of the graphics. The textures are quite poor unfortunately.

Walk up a shrub, ANY shrub, it looks terrible.

Maybe I'll boot it up and look around, they probably mean whatever addition they are adding is liable to cause bugs, freezes, and disconnections.

Thoroughly enjoyed it - the "cold shoulder" control set up is the same as every other shooter out there - so its super easy to jump into. This game is going to be huge.

As everyone said above, its literally Borderlands meets Halo with a touch of Rage.

And the voice acting feels so out of place and bad... Like you've stumbled into a B movie or something. I hope they fix that before the games release.

So far it feels like a B game, which is okay but that's what most online games are and I was hoping for a AAA. If the full game just adds more of what's here then it's ho hum territory, vague story lines and basic online interaction.

world, I'm getting the idea that if you had $500 million to make a videogame, Destiny is about as far away from a game you would think to have made.
