You Know, Mortal Kombat X Might Be Too Disgusting To Play

Yeah, it's unfortunately true that most of us are so unbelievably jaded that we barely even acknowledge violence and gore.

Gone are the days of people having what would be deemed an honest, human reaction; now, most people just laugh. That's a little disgusting in and of itself, but I'll be the first one to admit that I'm not grossed out by anything anymore.

And yet, I think Mortal Kombat X actually succeeded in making me wince. Obviously, I'm familiar with the franchise; over-the-top violence is the MK calling card. Those of you who remember their industry history know that Mortal Kombat helped bring about the ESRB that we know today. There were enough complaints from concerned parents watching their kids play MK in the arcades, so now we've got a rating system (which I wholeheartedly support, by the way).

Therefore, it makes sense for the developers to push the envelope. This isn't Mario; it's Mortal Kombat. It's what the fans want, right? Well, maybe, but I'm a little uneasy with the viscera I've already seen, and I have a feeling it's only going to get nastier. We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg for MKX, and that could end up being one ugly iceberg. I understand that we don't draw lines in the sand, anymore. I know that everything is allowed and everything is fair game.

But maybe the individual should take it upon himself to draw his own lines in the sand.

None of you YOUNG PUNKS are worthy of true Mortal Kombat. For you are wussies who play point and clicky games that involve Kung Fu Pandas .... wow. See what I did there? :)

Most of you YOUNG PUNKS get winded if you get off of your sorry fat butts to get a soda out of mommy's fridge, much less playing a REAL WARRIORS GAME!

Mortal Kombat is not for the weak. Stay out of my .... E-killings! For beating up on wussies like you ruins my Gaming Honorz!!

I welcome the gore. If I can eat chocolate pudding while watching Salo, I think I can handle another more realistic Mortal Kombat. Just like there are developers that continue to make childish looking games I'm glad there are developers looking to continuously push the limits.

The ONLY things you noobs need to know, is that a new Mortal Kombat is coming ..... and I am going to kill you all.

I will show you NO mercy or remorse. I will use the most deadly Final Blows that MK X will have to offer, and your pain will be great, Gandolf, oh yes it will be GREAT!

You will hold your controller and cry out in pain and defeat. You will run out of breath as you beg your mommy to get a soda for you, wiping the tears away, wanting a huggy wuggy from her to build your pathetic confidence up, just for me to destroy it again and again .....

You will wake up from nightmares ending with the words of "FLAWLESS VICTORY!" and beg your god for relief, only to be laughed at by your god in embarrassment and shame.

You would be better off to kill yourself now than face the evil that is Drithe Scorpion.

There can be only one.

End of line.

Don't get me wrong. I've always been a fan of gore. I don't even play Left4dead 2 anymore because our version (aussie version) was censored (played a bit at first but just wasn't the same). But the gore in Left4Dead is somewhat comic in nature and therefore entertaining. The gore in this MK entry however....man it's just yuck.

What struck me is what was it doing smack in the middle of the Sony conference?? We're having a great time with LittleBigPlanet, silly rockabilly zombies, and more, and then BAM! Have some slow-motion knifes in the skull and exploding hearts, why don't you?? Ditto for things like back when they debuted God of War 3. Oh, have some intestines being gored out in the middle of the conference. Everybody's cool with that, right?

I think the industry only hurts itself by glorifying this stuff at the highest profile events, and then blaming parents for their kids wanting it. Have it at E3, fine, but does it need to be front stage, center?

If you didn't notice, LittleBigPlanet 3 got the biggest reaction out of any game shown during either the Sony or Microsoft conferences, including Halo. LittleBigPlanet is gaming gold. That's why both Microsoft and Nintendo are copying it.

[edit] Also, lack of violence = "for kids"? There's half of this industry's problems, right there.

It most certainly didn't get the biggest reaction. You're just blindly throwing that out there to justify your original statement. I'm not at all knocking the game but lets not BS the facts. Why exactly is it okay for you to campaign for goreless media but I'm evidently in the wrong for embracing and enjoying gore in all forms of media?

I never suggested or implied that a game without gore is a game for kids. However, you're the one bringing up GoW3, praising LittleBigPlanet, and knocking MortalKombat. So evidently for you anything with gore shouldn't be marketed at a gaming conference.

BTW you do realize that both Mortal Kombat and GoW3 take place in fantasy worlds and don't actually depict the real world, right?

Unless they're of the drunk variety, most adults have no real desire to play gory games, in my experience. There has to be more to a game for a grown man/woman to find it compelling.

But as a kid, you tend to eat that crap up. Because it's still a novelty to a kid. So kids will naturally gravitate towards something like MKX.

I think something like Little Big Planet is something that adults will find more interesting. Mainly because is actually doing something innovative in terms of gameplay. Without the need of trying to be shocking.

Bonampak, what type of adults? I'm an adult and I would prefer to play mature games with gore, rather than LBP. I'd still play LBP, however, if I'm in the mood. Most of the time though, I'd like to play mature games, with necessary gore. I need entry and exit wounds! Why? To add to the realism and immersion.

Well it's all very cartoony/comic booky in MK but I have to say I do love that feeling when something can actually break through and make me wince with it's disgusting awesomeness.

It's terrible the restrictions they put on movies (even R rated) after the first wave of slashers and living dead flicks.

I do think it's part of MK to push the envelope so I don't disagree with their move to shock people with added levels of what MK is most known for. (just leave out that rap!) However, while I'll likely try it out, all the gore and stuff isn't something I'd want to regularly see from fighters I plan to spend a lot of time with. So unless I have a change of heart, LIKE SOMEONE FREEZING IT AND RIPPING IT OUT AND THROWING IT AT A TREE, then, heh, yah, I'll probably not become a hardcore fan of MKX.

Mortal Kombat is truly the only relevant and popular fighting game that has gore - so I don't mind it turning up to 11.

All fighters are violent but none of them even have blood and guts, like even Soul Calibur with its cutting blades. There's gotta be something for the visceral gore fans.

I don't play MK much but MK does make the death much more comical haha SO I wouldn't worry about this entry.

Given the slump Soul Calibur has gotten itself into, it needs to reinvent itself to be relevant again. Imagine a Soul Calibur game without a health bar. As you land hits on your opponents they bleed, their Armour weakens, they lose their mobility and strength. None of the animations show you impaling/ slicing through your opponent yet. And when you have beaten their armour into pulp/hacked your way into it, you shall land that one final blow that kills your opponent.

It would be the most satisfyingly gory game ever. Not gore for the sake of gore like Mortal Kombat.

I like your thinking but they would have to handle that "they lose their mobility and strength" bit different otherwise it would pretty much lose balance. What about the chars without armour? I guess they'll just get a lot of gashes before reaching fatal hit state.

Not sure how to picture having no health bar though... would it lose its competitiveness?

How in God's name are you going to complain about a fighting game that has always been a "fight to the death" style being too gory? If anything it became even MORE pure entertainment when you can get your skull pierced, ribs snapped, and neck broken IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHT and just keep fighting.

Yeah, but MK is so over the top and in no way realistic (apart from anatomy) that it's hilarious. There are scenes in The Last of Us that don't even show the goriest moment and those make me queasier than this because of the context within the game. MK is just hilariously over the top.

I've already seen all the fatalities that are in the game, so I have no reason to play it. The franchise never had the greatest fighting system anyway. Fighting games in general, have lost all appeal to me. It's not like the old days when you went to an arcade, put quarters up on the game screens, and have some knockdown dragout fights of Killer Instinct, Virtua Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, and Saturday Night Slam Masters. Fighting games need to be in a more social setting like they used to be. They just aren't the same playing them online against people. Taunting through a headset just isn't as enjoyable as it is when you're right next to the guy by the cabinet.
