Report: PS4 Passes 9 Million Units Sold

Until Microsoft issues the latest Xbox One numbers, we don't know how close this race has become.

According to a new Edge interview with Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison, the last Xbox One sales tally was about 5 million, which was accurate as of mid-April (as MCV clarified).

In that same interview, however, it says that Sony has sold 9 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide, which seems plausible. Sony hasn't officially confirmed that statistic, but it's an encouraging number. At last check, the PS4 had moved 7 million units; another 2 million in only a few months is a good sign. As for the Xbox One, we'll have to watch and see what happens now that the console can be purchased for $399 (as opposed to its $499 price tag at launch).

Can Sony maintain their lead throughout 2014 and beyond?

Why are so many people buying it? There are barely any good games on the damn thing.

People know Playstation always has elite exclusives. So instead of waiting to buy a ps4 when one of those games that intrigue them comes out, they buy one now. They spend the 400$ now, and then later on when the game comes out they spend 60$ rather than 470$. This also gives them time to buy little things for it until something comes out that they want. Its all about planning out the long stretch and not the here and now. At least I think thats what it is.

I agree though, aside from Killzone and Infamous Second Son there isn't much to be played on the PS4. But knowing what's to come for it, makes an entirely new kind of hype for it. People ride hype trains all the time and Sony knows how to keep people on them.

Titanfall is a good example of a hype train that lots of people have gotten on and off to walk away and hop onto the next hype train.

I'm probably wrong but that's how I see it. Cool avatar by the way.

Also having a PS4 before you need it allows you to rack up PS Plus instant game collection games. IMO only Outlast is the only one any good, but some people do like the indies and 2Ds so far.

We can say the same about the X1...Besides Titanfall there really isnt much to play either... I'm still playing my PS3 but i still rather get the the ps4 and X1 now while i have money before all the triple AAA titles start flooding the market early next year

But if you need to pick one go with ps4... Sony always had a better list of exclusives than MS or you can be like me and just get all the systems and enjoy all games in all platforms although i kno a lot of ppl cant do that

Depends on your tastes - I'm loving my PS4, it's still playing second-string to PC at the moment, but it's getting played daily, and it's actually doing better-than-average for games for a relatively new console. The big issue with perception is that with all the internet blogging and information overload there are comparisons of game libraries between mature consoles and those recently released every couple of days on the internet warping people's perspective.

If someone is a 'broad' gamer (ie, enjoys a range of different gaming styles) and games 10-20 hours a week, there is more than enough content on the PS4 now. Hell, even if someone is just an FPS junkie, you've got four very lively options. Of course, if you only play RPGs it's a little light on (as are _all_ consoles early on), but that's because RPGs take a long time to make, and happens every gen.

You down need a PS4 to claim PS+ games though, you can do it through the SEN store website. That's what I've been doing every month.

So probably 9 million versus 6 million, MS must be shakin a little bit. Skeered to let out numbers, trying to hang onto Cod and BF timed exclusives, Quantum Break going nowhere, Ryse fail, Titanfall exodus. How long will they be willing to be handily defeated this generation?

That 6 mill would be shipped to retailers and not sold through to customers.
MS would be lucky to of sold 5 million.

MS will be able to claim a lot of "shipped" units because of their new $399.99 skus.
That change allowed them to ship many thousands to retailers even if demand never picked up.

on a related note to yesterday's Vita story. Shacknews reported an official Sony statement.
The systems are selling out (the new slimmer Vita model has helped) and they're ramping up production to meet the demand for a big holiday push.

Probably helps that people who have had PS+ for a while now, especially since the PS4 came out are possibly considering it now with the Vita price drop and the fact that if they've been paying attention, already have a lot of games to play on it from PS+.

It's also worth noticing that the Xbone is not yet launched in all markets. It's still not launched here in Norway - that happens this autumn. So the Xbone numbers *will* make a jump this autumn no matter what.

If it's anything like the rest of the Euro numbers, I wouldn't get too excited. That "jump" will be a blip.

Got my ps4 last week. My ps3 is old (the first 80gig model) so I got the ps4 early for netflix and stuff like that...and the fact that its the latest system and I had the money for it burning in my savings account... Killzone has been fun so far. Outlast is pretty intense. the free indy games and Trine (see what I did there?) have all been pretty fun so far too. I really like that the download speed issue has been fixed with the ps4.

nice to see next gen systems off to a flying start!
even more frustrating seeing all the cross gen games and lack of innovation and creativity.
last gen had a excuse with the really low sales of the systems, and we still saw some really cool unique ambitious titles, and plenty next gen only titles!
now bloody everything is next gen, were never going to see the potential of these systems and make us go wow this is what we waited SEVEN long years for when companies refuse to leave last gen systems behind!
ok theres a massive install base with last gen systems, but 9M ps4s and what say 6M xbox ones is not exactly something to be slouched at!

To answer banky, apparently the old fatties have a bad wireless connection that tends to not like certain routers, such as the one I have. And I just found this out tonight. So,for the most part,no, there isn't a slow download problem... Should have looked more into it.
