PS4 Will Play Used Games, So No Need To Suffer A Meltdown
It probably needed to, or there would've been a full-scale gamer revolt.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that the recently revealed PlayStation 4 will play used games. That's a relief.
There had been rumors that next-gen consoles would block pre-owned software, but Yoshida said that in regards to the consumer's expectation when they purchase a physical disc, "they want to use it everywhere, right?" Bet GameStop is breathing a little easier now, as a fair portion of their business is pre-owned software; it accounts for over $1 billion in revenue every year. And gamers are probably happy about this as well, although there's bound to be continued debate on the subject.
Oh, and by the way, the reason Sony didn't show off the actual PS4 console last night is simply because as Yoshida just confirmed, the hardware design isn't finalized. Well, hurry up...we wanna see it!

The PS4 does not have anywhere close to the processing power to do software based PS3 emulation and Sony isn't about to increase production costs to include the bare minimum of having Cell to achieve it for something that will barely be used by most people, especially after a year or two.

It might be more expensive, but the upside is huge.
(The PS4 GPU is based on the same tech as the PS3's, right?)

WorldEndsWithMe, so gaming on the PS3 is suddenly not being considered a gamer anymore huh?

I know Sony (not to mention other developers) will make a ton of games for the PS4 and most will be awesome. What gets me excited about new tech (and I was on tenterhooks for a year over the PS3) is the hardware and its capabilities. Right now, I'm pretty tepid.
In short, if I wanted to buy an Xbox, I'd buy an Xbox. Actually, I'd shoot myself in the head, but you get the point.

I agree with Fane1024, ofcourse the PS4 will bring some better graphics compared to the PS3, but it's simply not showing that next-gen leap that will last another 5-10 years for me.

How did you think World was suggesting playing PS3 wasn't being a gamer? That was a really strange disconnect there. He was clearly saying that if nothing at all in that conference excited you... not a single thing in that 2 hour conference... that you aren't a gamer.
Quite frankly, he's completely right. Every gamer can easily find something there worth getting excited over.

If you cut out used games then you cut out the ability to borrow or rent games. And that is a bad thing.

There's also the factor where I can't afford a game at release and when I try to get it at a later date there are no new copies available so my only option is pre-owned.

The tactful way is to provide gaming in such a way that a used market can't exist. All the gaming companies want to get rid of used games, but none of them are going to want to be the first ones to forcefully take it away on a whim.
It'll leave because whatever way games are distributed in the future beyond PS4 won't allow for used games to be possible, not by decision, but by mere practicality.

If you're talking about digital downloads there are already those that have a built-in system for trading and selling those back, and either way an all-digital full games future is completely unrealistic for many years to come, just based on the raw facts of bandwidth limitations.
Just look at something as simple as that Sony reveal video presentation. I have a 12mbps connection and still couldn't even stream the video properly at sub-std definition quality, and some people think it's realistic to think that we will all be downloading day-one million-copy sellers of AAA-50gb-games.
Not now, not in a LONG time. Not ever in my home for that matter.

Because innovation is what causes industry (of all kinds) to advance. That's what is so great about human ingenuity. We consistently push the buck and force everyone else to say, "How did I not think of that first?"
Because there are actually possibilities you and I haven't been able to consider yet. Because that's the way technology works.
It can't possibly be that difficult to imagine new ways of media delivery, can it? floppy disks... to cartridges or cd rom's... to dvd's to blu ray... we have downloads, then streaming, then high definition, then access keys, then data sharing, and torrents and cloud based servers and holy jeeze that's just the last 25 years or so and I haven't even named everything yet...
Or when you get down to it... you need to think outside the box because the next 5 years will show you things you never even considered existing. Because that's how the world works...
Like... humanity 101 bro.

I'll take my low-tech 50gb 1080p blu-ray's with Dolby TrueHD ahead of your innovative low-bandwidth super-ingenuity 128kbps mp3's any day, but hey that's just me.
New doesn't always necessarily mean better, "bro".
