The Order: 1886's Fearsome Enemies Are Lycans, Not Werewolves

Ever since we've seen footage of the PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886, gamers have assumed the enemies are werewolves.

Well, not quite. As Ready at Dawn community manager J Goldberg told Polygon in a recent interview, the player will face off against half-wolf, half-man creatures, which are nasty and brutal...but also intelligent.

"When you say 'werewolves' people think they're generally just, you know, dog-like creatures that don't have any intelligence. But since they're half-breed, they're half-man and half-wolf, they still have intelligence. That allows them to think and talk. There will be lots of interactions with them."

Werewolves are popular these days, especially on television ("Bitten," "Teen Wolf," etc.), but don't assume The Order's story is simple and cliched. These Lycans aren't romantic in the least and in fact, the developers have spent a great deal of time devising the horrid enemies for the game. It wasn't a response to what's popular; it was a concerted effort to produce a frightening foe. Added Goldberg:

"This game has been in development for quite some time, the first creative draft was written before the PlayStation 4 was even announced; [the developers] have had this creative idea for a while, and there have been many different attempts at who the enemies should be in the game. We've always had them in there, we've never been like, 'Oh look, they're doing werewolves, and they're doing werewolves, so let's do our own werewolves.' It's more like it just happened this way [with the Lycans]."

That's an important distinction, because we have high hopes for the plot in The Order: 1886. Even if it's a pretty standard third-person shooter, we want the narrative to stand out.

I respect their attempt to make them into "Monsters" http://www.psxextreme.com/feature/1086.html

I'm sorry but half human half wolf with intelligence is still a werewolf. But I'm not complaining, I can't wait to see how they interpret them.

From what I read there are some differences between the two. Werewolves are described as being under a curse through witchcraft and only transform by a full moon. They walk like a wolf and act like a wolf with animal intelligence.

A lycan can transform anytime he wants and resembles a wolf but walks like a man and has intelligence like a man. With the creepy direction modern science is taking, a lycan stands the chance of actually existing.

You should have sent that to World through PSN to guarantee he's the only one who gets it.

It would be funny if you made up a code that worked.

cool.

Bungie's web servers are down. you'd think for a big game release they wouldn't have the beta codes made available all at the same time 10am PST for this very reason.

Love the distinction. Basically Werewolves don't have much of a purpose other than running around eating things due to the animalistic nature overcoming them. Lycans are normally in a pack, or coven. They have a pack leader and he is obviously the strongest one. Not always the biggest one which is super weird. Same with wolves. Anyway, the fact they made that distinction makes me even more hyped for the game. Gotta dig cool little tid bits like that.
