June NPD: PS4, Watch Dogs Still At #1

Probably not the best news for Microsoft, but great news for Sony.

Even though Xbox One sales "more than doubled" thanks to the price cut on June 9 (removing Kinect dropped the price to $399), Microsoft's console still couldn't manage to outsell the PlayStation 4 in the US during the month of June.

This according to the NPD Group's report, and Sony further confirmed that the PS4 was tops yet again. This is the sixth month in a row that Sony's next-gen machine has been the best-selling system in the US region, and it's important to note that the PS4 was the top platform for physical software as well. The Wii U got a healthy sales spike thanks to the launch of Mario Kart 8; Wii U sales were up 233 percent when compared to June of 2013. Again, though, no exact numbers.

As for software, May's hit title Watch Dogs remained on top, with Mario Kart 8 in the runner-up slot. Here's the Top 10 list but bear in mind that the NPD doesn't count digital sales:

  • Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC) -- Ubisoft
  • Mario Kart 8 (NWU) -- Nintendo
  • Minecraft (360, PS3) -- Microsoft | Sony
  • UFC (PS4, XBO) -- Electronic Arts
  • FIFA 14 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PSV) -- Electronic Arts
  • NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, XBO, PC) -- Take 2 Interactive
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC) -- Bethesda Softworks
  • Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, NWU, PC) -- Activision Blizzard
  • Tomodachi Life (3DS) -- Nintendo
  • Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3) -- Take 2 Interactive

One explanation is that Microsoft's poor attitude towards gamers, as was showcased through their XBOX1 unveiling, has stained its view almost irrevocably amongst gamers. It seems Microsoft hadn't accounted for the power of social media to inform and educate. That's the one thing that's different this generation: the world is more connected.

The internet has shaken up the balance of power on our cute little planet. You can't f*** with the people anymore. We are too strong now.

Makes you wonder what kind of state we would be in if the majority of the population used that strength and actually voted.

Ahem, but I digress.

The only way Microsoft could have further botched the release of the Xbox One is if it had kicked a kitten and posted the video online. They are operating from a huge handicap with consumers.

It's been leaked by NewEgg how much consoles have sold in the US market so far (LTD):

PS4 - 3.6 MILLION

X1 - 2.9 MILLION

WiiU - 2.5 MILLION

For comparison, this is how last gen consoles are fairing so far:

Wii - 41.9 MILLION

Xbox - 41.5 MILLION

PS3 - 25.9 MILLION

When you look at those numbers (which only confirmed what Ben has been saying all this time) - The Xbox brand totally dominated in the US.

Now look at what is happening now.

The PlayStation brand is at the top once again after finishing in 3rd place last gen! AMAZING.

Not really a big surprise. MS is still pushing their advertising with kinect in the limelight, notably their voice recognition being the fancy lazy person's dream arsenal of tools. Others realized that their cable/satellite providers already equipped them with a cable/sat box. Then there are the graphical and performance differences between the ps4 and xbone.

It seems like MS still wants to move the kinect systems, despite of its desperation to keep up with Sony.

Speaking of Sony... It's going to be a world of hurt for the ps+ online play initiative of they can't keep their servers up AND charging people for it. While I personally understand the story behind the network, the time needed for developing and expanding it, new comers don't care. Neither do those (ps3 owners) who oppose the switch to charging for the service. Destiny brought it crashing down. Not a good indication of what Sony is offering.

it was planned by Sony. it sucks yes. but they intentionally blocked off regions from PSN access while they launched Destiny's beta, sequentially. They started in the east and worked their way west. by around 1:00pm PST they had everything back to normal. I didn't like it either, believe me. But I suppose it's better to play it safe than sorry by having the entire network crash under the nation wide wave of people logging in.

EDIT: even Bungie's site went down for about 30min or more around 10am PST.

Titanfall brought down the vaunted XBL network and they charge $60/yr. It's just reality and no network is going to be able to handle millions upon millions of gamers connecting at the same time. I had trouble connecting for about 30min but kept trying. I was able to get everything I need and boy was it worth it.

Week one, and to an extent week 2, of FFXIV was a nightmare, too. Didn't help that everyone could play for free, either.

Since then, it's been breezy.

If Sony intended on pulling down the network, why wasn't I forewarned. I'm just saying... Great means of covering their ass. I'm not concerned about Bungie going down; it's a free beta. If you complain about a developer preparing a beta launch, you're delusional. That said, I'm very patient regarding the network. Only so much can be implemented before it's live. Once it's up and running, things quickly require addressing before they stack on any other potentially glitchy features.

We were forewarned. Little updates like that scroll across the top right of your screen every time you turn on your PS3 (assuming the same for PS4).

Ahhhhh, then you may chalk it up to user error. I'm pretty sure that it's my tunnel vision syndrome at the main screen. Figured stuff like that would be in the notifications center (with downloads and stuff).

No doubt something like that should be a little more noticeable. Personally, I'd like to see it pop up at start up the same way it does when it tells you it backed your saves up to the cloud.

Well one of two things happened.

1) Xbox One is selling so bad that even 200% sales increase couldn't beat PS4
2) Microsoft PR's announcement of a 200% increase was a slightly twisted fact.

I heard that Microsoft based that 200% number from an internal survey and not on actual sales numbers.

NPD numbers have been leaked.

PS4: 269,000
Xbox One: 197,000
Wii U: 140,000

What I said in my previous comment, it seems number 1 was the correct answer. Xbox One only sold 77,000 in May lol.

At the same price without kinect, the XboxOne just seems like a less powerful, bulkier, less attractive version of the PS4, with fewer quality exclusives.

Kinect, love it or hate it, was the one thing Xbox had that set it apart from their competitor.

I'll probably never buy another nintendo system, but I always root for them. I guess because I know that there's a friend of mine somewhere that will have one, and I'll just play on that one from time to time. Anyways, way to go Sony. Now all they have to do is make the rest of the company successful.

They'll get a nice blip in sales just like anything does after a price cut. But that won't last long - it's just not an attractive product at all. Now you can have the less powerful machine with the poorer selection of exclusives and you don't even have to pay $100 extra for it lol.

And you've just gotta love how Microsoft lies to everyone all the time. "Kinect is the centerpiece of the Xbox One, the whole thing is designed and built around it!" What a joke.

Xbox's course correction -- stronger emphasis on games, ditch the Kinect, etc. -- is impressive, especially considering how quickly they righted the ship. But momentum matters. Sony came out of the gate with a full head of steam last November, benefited from glowing word of mouth praise from overjoyed early adopters like me, and has handled their communications across all channels spectacularly.

This goes to show how correct they were, those who commented to that article the other day stating that "twice the sales" means *nothing* without the actual numbers.

Yeah. Smart of Microsoft to get that "twice the sales" bit out shortly before the actual numbers. There will be a lot of people who only know "twice the sales".

This was expected. I mean people keep making up all of these excuses for the lower X1 sales and why Sony is selling more except the actual reason ...The PlayStation is the biggest brand in gaming history.Sony has sold the most consoles period.

PS1 and PS2 dominated the U.S. and the PS3 would have if it was not for the year early launch of the 360, lack of online features and the 360 having the third party games to themselves for at least 2 years.

Then the PS3 was expensive (though it still sold more globally in it's first year and more total than the 360).

Besides the Wii sold the most in the U.S, so the Xbox was never the highest selling console anywhere.

Now PSN is far superior to Live, Kinect is dead, third party is better on the PS4 and people are coming back to Sony. Most went and bought a PS3 anyway.

The Xbox does not have that many diehard fans and never did.Live is a none factor, the COD crowd moved to PSN and the console is the same price.

Halo and Gears did not sell the 360. It was third party, mostly COD and GTA, but people don't have to get a 360 now.

I have not heard anyone mention Live or Xbox who had a 360 since 2010. They all have a PS3/PS4 now.

I predicted all of this back in 2012. I said MS was making a mistake pushing Kinect and not creating/marketing other exclusive games besides Gears and Halo.

Not even Forza could sell the console and both Ryse and Kinect Sports flopped while all of Sony's exclusives went platinum.

I could go on and on, but it just amazes me how most people did not see this coming and why they thought the Xbox as a brand was popular.
