No Cross-Platform Play For Destiny, And Bungie Explains

Cross-platform multiplayer won't be an option for Destiny, but there's a good reason why.

Of course, you knew that PlayStation Network players would never be able to play with Xbox Live players. You may have hoped, however, that PS3 players could play with PS4 players, and Xbox One players with Xbox 360 players.

That won't happen, either, though. Bungie engineer Roger Wolfson explained to Digital Trends that this decision was made in the interest of fairness:

"I'll speak for the hypothetical player. I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I'm four pixels on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage."

That makes sense, doesn't it? Wolfson added that in order create the best possible atmosphere, "both actually and perceptually," they separated the game by platform. This limits the playing field if you're a next-gen owner because let's face it, there really aren't that many next-gen consoles out there. Well, at least not when compared to the PS3 and 360; combined sales of the latter two systems exceed 160 million, while combined sales of the PS4 and Xbox One probably only come to about 15 million.

Then again, if you're serious about enjoying Destiny, you gotta have a next-gen machine, right?

I do have something to add here, judging from the PS4 and PS3 betas. I was surprised to find that my character from the PS4 beta works with the PS3 beta. I didn't have to do any fancy tricks. I simply booted up like normal and I could access my same game with all his progress from the PS3.
I suppose if someone wanted to do a two room setup with Destiny, using both a PS3 and a PS4, they could. As in to play sometimes in one room and sometimes in the other. Of course you'd probably need to buy a game for each platform ;)

I suppose another way to look at this is that if you have a PS3 but don't have a PS4 yet but would like to start in with all the Destiny action, you could. Then when you get a PS4 you could start using your character on the new platform. It's like cross-save is built right in. This is assuming they continue supporting this feature after the beta.

The PS3 version seems solid so far. It doesn't look as sharp or having the same level of luster as the PS4 version, but it still holds up nicely. I don't see any screen tearing and the framerate seems mostly solid. Some of the shadowing effects indoors can look pretty jagged and poor. Overall it feels faithful and well worth it if one doesn't have a PS4 yet.

I'm digging this beta more than the alpha for numerous reasons but I'm still not convinced, not because of the story and quality (both good)or multiplayer but because the cartoony Halo presentation isn't exactly my thing.

It's actually got me downloading Blacklight and Dust 514. I hope Dust comes to PS4, it could compete.

It does look great, even a bit next gen. In FPS I kinda like the grit of Resistance 3 and Wolfenstein though.

Still haven't decided on if I'll buy Destiny but I'll keep trying it.

Okay nevermind all those things I said. I just played Blacklight and Dust 514.

Destiny is head and shoulders above them so now I see why people think it's so great and am more convinced.

I like both.
I prefer old Killzone's look over the new glaring lights look.

and as the saying goes about variety and life....

I was hoping for a better reason then just sniping. By that logic people with big 1080p TVs shouldn't play with people with small 720p TVs

good point. but this scenario really only applies to the elite players. those that are really good. believe me, a skilled FPS player on 480p could rip me a new one even if I were to be playing on a 4K television/monitor.

it's with the best of the best where the slightest of differences can mean winning and losing

Oh I understand completely that they don't won't any unfair advantage, I just would have preferred a better reason.
I can't see many ps3 owners caring that ps4 owners have two extra pixels while sniping from afar and if that's the only reason the two consoles can't play with each other it don't make sense.

But of course it probably more to do with ps4 having a more solid framerate and smoother gameplay.

So, it all comes down to view distance, and not the ridiculous pixel count, which I'm sure is just an excuse to tide in with the modern day resolution wars.

A higher view distance would provide snipers with a serious edge over players on lesser hardware, so the guy does have a point. Still, unless the difference is significantly different, I don't see as how this would be a major problem.

If anything, it's just another reason to get a new console. If you want to play Density on your PS3, and all of your friends have a PS4, you might feel more inclined to plop down the cash to pick one up now instead of waiting.
