The Last Of Us PS3 vs. PS4 Comparison: Impressive, No?

The Last Of Us: Remastered hits store shelves today, and maybe you're wondering: Just how much better does it look?

Well, a new comparison video shows off the graphical upgrades you'll enjoy in the new PlayStation 4 title. The game looked amazing enough on the PS3 but with full 1080p and 60 frames per second, developer Naughty Dog has managed to push the visual bar even higher.

The 60 frames per second argument has incited plenty of heated discussions around the Internet; some claim it makes all the difference in the world, while others say they don't need it at all and in fact, they prefer 30FPS. There has also been plenty of controversy surrounding the game itself, as it costs $50 (originally, it was going to retail for $60), and there is no discount available to those who purchased the PS3 version.

But we still say: It's one of the best games ever made, and it just got better. So quit your whining.

I can see why they kept a tight lid on it....until the night before launch. It's okay but not WOW.

when I start thinking about it. In one year's time Sony has had how many strong exclusives on PS4?
Let's see for PS3
Resistence FoM
Motorstorm
Heavenly Sword
Warhawk
Ratchet and Clank Future (made holiday of following year)
Uncharted (like R&C within the next full year)
Folklore
Tekken 5 DR
and whole lot of other games that weren't ports from PS2 or Xbox.

PS4
KZ SF (poor)
Knack (poorer)
Infamous SS (good)
TLoU HD re-release
LBP3 (not MM so who knows?)
Drive Club (maybe. maybe not)

Sony really wasn't prepared to launch the PS4 other than getting the hardware out before the XO.

EDIT: and for me Ninja Gaiden Sigma was HUGE for a first year PS pseudo exclusive ;)

and judging how crappy Sony has been at pushing their system software I think MS still has every shot at keeping America. Sony has had their window of opening to make America a dead ringer for MS but they're blowing it I think.
Sony has been winning by not doing anything extreme. If MS hadn't have gone wacky with the XO from the start I feel PS4 may have been Sony's last....

There's not a massive difference but I can see it. It seems to be mostly down to textures and lighting but it's there.

Nice list! I'd be interested in seeing Microsoft's X360 and Xbone first year exclusive lineups to see how they compare.

And I must disagree with the "poor" statement next to Killzone: SF. While the single player wasn't all that great, the multiplayer has been one of the best multiplayers out there - extremely well balanced (very important), great map layouts, and lots of fun. It's a shame it get's drowned out by the unbalanced garbage that is CoD and the broken-as-heck Battlefield 4.

"I think MS still has every shot at keeping America"

^^^ LOL No. The X1 is doing underwhelming numbers post-launch compared to the 360. It had a better launch. But everything has been going downhill for said console since.

The gap between the X1 and the PS4 continues to grow wider in the US. X1 has been trailing the PS4 for six months in a row by several thousand units. Nothing seems that is going to change that trend. Absolutely nothing MS has done has changed any of it.

Things are so bad for the X1, that MS isn't even making new consoles. Instead, they're just desperately trying to get rid of their current stock in order to hopefully give the console a price cut sometime in the near future.

Then you have the fact that MS is constantly trying to HIDE the loses from the Xbox division by lumping it with their android profits. The Xbox platform is behind the 2 billion in loses (from a 2.5 billion total) within their entertainment and devices group.

Presently, Satya Nadella is focusing on the mobile market and the infamous cloud. He doesn't think much about the Xbox brand (he barely talked about it in his memo discussing the future of the company).

@Temjin001,

My games are mainly ps3 exclusives due to the fact of lazy 3rd party developers. Now I'm happy to play ps4 games because 3rd party games look amazing on Sony playstation. Assassins creed Unity, Destiny, Call of Duty.

Bonapak. You can't say MS has done nothing when they dropped the price to match Sony's. That's something. I just feel Sony has the opportunity in their hands to seal the deal, if only they had a game lineup that was at least as strong as any of the prior consoles, Vita included.
Yes, Sony has a sizable lead stateside. I'm guessing by at least 25%. Meaning if Sony has 4 million installed in the US then MS has 3. It would take a lot of consecutive months of MS having big wins to close that gap right now. Think about this. If MS started outselling the PS4 by 25% every month from here on out, assuming consoles push through at about 200,000k per month stateside, in months outside of Holiday months (so jan-oct), that would clock in at a 50k per month surplus for MS. To close the 1 million unit gap it would take 20 months of non-stop 25% wins in the US from where we're at now. This is really unlikely. That's why I believe if by fiscal year of 2015 if MS hasn't been able to claim a single month then there's pretty much no way in heck they can close the gap within any amount of short time in the states. No. It would take years and years bearing a dramatic turn around that stays persistent in MS's advantage. Something we've never seen in console gaming.

Okay. So maybe I'm venting from my previous post. I just think Sony is putting up a lousy fight. Yes. They're winning and all but it feels a lot like last year's Super Bowl. Sure, the Seahawks kicked the snot out of the Broncos, but the Broncos sure seemed drunk at the game.

@Tenjin - I didn't say that MS did nothing to change X1's chances in the US market. What I said was that nothing that they have done to-date has reversed the trend of them trailing the PS4 for six months in a row. With absolutely no indication that said trend will ever change.

The PS4's lineup is great. Don't see how you could knock it. Besides, even if you perceive that it's not a great lineup, the PS4 still sells better than any other console on the market. Because unlike MS, Sony has gained the trust from consumers. Who expect great things from the PS4, not the X1.

I already mentioned how MS is losing too much cash because of the Xbox platform. And how there are talks within that company to spin-off that division or to even sell it. It's not profitable.

In regards to what you say about Sony taking their time to finish off the X1, at this point it's not a priority. I dunno if you already forgot, but Sony is not exactly doing too well financially. They're not in such a dire situation as MS' Xbox division, but Sony sure needs to get their house in order first. They're on track to do just that.

Besides, MS has destroying the Xbox brand since the last E3. They barely need help with that. ;)

sorta seems like taking a PC game from high to very high...... or say upgrading from a digital HD version of a movie to a Blu Ray. I wanted to say from DVD to Blu Ray but seeing that in this case we're going from 720p to 1080p instead of 480p to 1080p that would be overstating it a bit.
but hey! it's 60fps!
that'll be $50 please =p

That's a pretty noticeable difference, actually. At 4:40 you really pick it out. There's also a noticeable audio difference.

There is a sort of price cut if you bought the game. Trade it in at GameStop get 50% off. That's what I'm doing. Gives me an excuse to play it again.

Is it just me or does Joel look slightly thinner?

Not to put down ND or anything but it doesn't seem like that big of a jump like the one GTAV had, but still good job nonetheless. Also, it seems to have a bit of a Netflix effect to it, where a video changes hue when switching from SD to HD. Or at least that's what I've noticed on the PS3.

i can see why they kept videos, and reviews locked up till day before launch.
can hardly tell the difference!
especially the foliage one thing that really bugged me with the ps3 version was how stiff and plasticy the plants and trees looked, and in this there exactly the same theres no physics effects or volume what so ever just looks like a wax figure!
THIS is the best the ps4 has to offer!?
starting to wish this was never done and instead of wasting time and resources on this, it was spent on getting U4 up to speed.

Essentially the only difference I see is noteably higher resolution textures (ergo more detailed) - but that's the least to be expected imo, considering the massive increase of video ram.

But then again, this is just a remaster and not a new game so I guess one should adjust their expectations accordingly.

I wore a headset during the video. It could just be the video, but the PS4 version had much improved audio, as well.

The textures make a pretty big difference, imo. Just look at 4:40.

Also, at the intro conversation between Joel and his daughter, I thought the faces looked much more life-like.

As for other add-ins, I like that they've added the DLC. It's basically a GOTY edition but with improved graphics. Most GOTY editions get away with full pricing, too (and without improved graphics), so for me, I truly cannot understand the hatred some have for it. Especially if you can trade in your old one and get the new for $20, which also comes with all the DLC... seems like an all-out steal.

Yeah I did skip to 4:40 after reading your post :)

By all means, the difference is there. No doubt. Since I don't have the original game I can't consider the audio.

But taken into consideration the relative upgrade of the hardware between the two, I don't think it's more than really one should expect.

I think the difference between GTA5 on PS3 and PS4 was way, waaaaay more impressive. *That* was an upgrade to write home about.

No idea. I'm basing my opinion on what I see, not technical specifications. Relatively speaking there is a much larger visual gap between the GTA versions than what we see here.

The GTA5 upgrade is much larger, certainly! I think it's also worth pointing out that graphically, GTA5 didn't achieve anywhere on the same level as TLoU. When there's more room for improvement, you can expect more improvement.
